We reserved a table a week ago to celebrate a family birthday and boy were we dissapointed ! .... When telephoning our call taker asked If the visit was to celebrate an occassion (which it was ) and greeted by friendly young staff and an over-powering smell of "sewerage" ......yes, blocked drains ! ...Our young host speedily came across to take an order for drinks who was asked about this horrible smell and quickly retired to invite the manageress to come across to speak to us. This charming lady was very apologetic about this "historical" problem where the staff were running hot water behind the bar (?) to try and minimise the smell which was very offensive and indeed offered to again to call "Maintenance" .... I emphasise this according to the managerss was "historical" and volunteered that they "get used to it"...? Naturally, our concern was if this horrendous smell penetrated into the restaurant which we were reassured was not the case however, we were invited to check it out before we ordered. "no need to,we take your word for it" and upon the delivery of our drinks and orders placed for lunch, we were speedily invited into a warmly decorated restaurant with views across the putting area. Our starters duly arrived and warmly greeted and exactly as described . The Cabernet sauvignon was lightly chilled and very enjoyable. Mains courses arrived being predominently beef and one of chicken...... The plates were cold and the beef, best described as tepid, however an extra helping of gravy took the chill away. Albeit somewhat delayed, the vegetables ( a single bowl for 5 ? ) arrived awash with hot water in the base and again in a cold dish. The roast potatoes which accompanied the beef were dry, rubbery and had the texture of that which had either been re-heated or suffered an extended period under the heat-lamp ? ...Nevertheless, the vegetables were replaced, apologies offered, water drained off and a new bowl returned to our table.......again awash in hot water....ugh! Plates removed, dessert menu offered and order taken, we delighted ourselves with the choice and after paying the bill left and made our way home back to Northumberland.
The venue is no doubt attractive set in beautiful well manicured grounds. The Clubhouse, attractive in design, but the atrocious smell upon arrival and indeed inside the seated bar area was off-putting to say the least. Sadly the food let the entire dining experience down . The staff were efficient, and the management apologetic however, a " family Sunday lunch" never to be forgotten for all the wrong reasons........Would we go back ? Very unlikely .

Visited with friends for Christmas Day lunch. The experience was not what we expected given the cost. The food was average to say the least. The main course was served swimming in gravy with veg already plated.
One of our group had ordered the beef which was extremely "rare". Should they not ask how you like your beef?
When ordering drinks the wait to be served was painfully slow and we had to remind the waiter what we had ordered. A bottle of wine was brought to the table and passed to us to open ourselves!
Not impressed at all and certainly would not rush back.

We thought we would have Christmas Day lunch out this year and were told by neighbours how good Rockcliffe Hall is so tried to book. The Brasserie was full by September but the Clubhouse still had tables free so we booked this, paid the deposit then the balance. The total for two people was £170 without wine.

The Clubhouse is away from the Hall and has pleasant views overlooking the golf course. To enter the function room you go past the golf shop and the bar area. Little effort was made to make the entrance look seasonal and inviting but a complimentary glass of Prosecco or orange juice makes up for this a little.

The large dining room was elegantly furnished and had been given Christmas touches. We had a visit from beautifully dressed Santa and Mrs Claus with gifts for the youngsters. The waitresses were young and pleasant and things started well. Our table had no salt and pepper so whoever had checked the tables had missed this. The butternut squash veloute and ham and game terrine were nice and drinks were brought to us as soon as we asked for them though I tried twice to get a jug of water which I did eventually get. Main courses were excellent - medium rare roast beef with the trimmings and so many vegetables we left most of them. The portions were very generous.

Desserts were brought - fruity, light, Christmas pudding for me and chocolate tart for my husband which we enjoyed. Then things started to go wrong.

The cheese course was brought and the tea/coffee at the same time. We felt at this stage that we were being rushed. Have the tea at this restaurant if you like it as you get a teapot full whereas the coffee is one cup only. A bit mean at these prices. Our cheese course plates weren't cleared away as we drank the tea/coffee and waited for 'treats' as promised on the menu; these never materialised. Our waitresses had disappeared after bringing the cheese and nobody came near us from then on. We might have wanted port, brandy or liqueurs but were unable to attract anyone's attention.

This left us feeling disappointed and we felt that the service let them down. Would we try Rockcliffe Hall itself? Yes probably but not the Clubhouse again.

Visited 15th December for lunch and the staff were attentive and friendly. We ate from the all day menu - all of us having some form of sandwich ranging from croque Monsieur to grilled goats cheese focaccia. Lovely sized portion served with kettle crisps and salad. We also visited a month ago for tea with family and again, none of us could fault the food or service. We'll be back again soon. The room is beautifully decorated with views over the golf course. Highly recommended
