“Perfect, sun-kissed family retreat”
Reviewed August 19, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

What a lovely break, made all the easier by really good owners who kept in good contact throughout the process.

We arrived knowing all arrangements for accessing the property, with good recommendations for places to visit and for dinners out, which took (nearly!) all the strain off travelling with small children.

Our party was four adults and four children, aged between 2 and 6, and we all loved exploring Tuchan - a quiet, gentle town where the pace of life is all you could dream of when you think of getting away from it all.

The town itself is reasonably remote, so you'd definitely need a car. Friendly locals, happy to encourage any attempt at French, were as warm as the weather.

The house itself is well situated, capable of housing our number, though if you are travelling with small children we would recommend (as we did) bringing a travel stair gate as well as the one provided by the owners, as there are a number of steps throughout the house. The outdoor terrace is great, though if you've small children please be mindful that the window just outside the door belongs to next door's bedroom. They're very understanding but still it's good to know in advance!

The house is well-appointed, tastefully decorated and finished to a lovely standard; it really was a home away from home, especially as we cooked sausages from the local butcher with vegetables bought from the market outside the Mairie!

Other than for the odd DVD we couldn't get the TV to work, but then you can watch telly any time - you're not always on holiday in such a lovely part of the world!

The honest-bar idea is a good one, though we felt the wines were maybe on the high side price-wise, though I have to say that this just encouraged us to explore the local wine caves for ourselves and that's no bad thing!

Whether swimming in the river at Paziols, in the sea at Le Bacares, or the local pool at the campsite (free if you're purchasing something from the bar or snack hut, which you will, because it's brilliant), our kids loved every minute. The wet room on the ground floor of the house was a particular bonus in this regard.

If you're staying, we'd all recommend:
- making sure you pay close attention to the opening hours of the shops, which generally close between 12 and 4
- using the local park, which our kids loved
- making reservations for dinner wherever you go, especially the campsite, as it's not uncommon to see people unable to get a table
- visiting the local wine cave, and doing the walking tour of the town (little notices on the walls guide you, with reasonable if not always consistent accuracy)
- getting your croissants and pains au chocolat from the bakery owned by the Russians over by Place de la Fontaine, and your bread from the one opposite the church.

There'd be so much more to share but really such a place encourages you to explore it. At 35-40 mins' drive from main civilisation, Tuchan may be more distant than you'd usually consider but for the genuine French country pace of life amid jaw-dropping scenery, it is perfect.

It is hot, probably a little too hot from time to time for my two-year-old son, but nevertheless we'd all be back in a heartbeat.

We had a wonderful time in Tuchan, the house proved to be a great base for our family of 5 ...plenty of room for us all, especially with the bonus of a small internal terraced courtyard.
Tuchan is a delightful rural village at the base of mount Tauch, ideally situated for daily excursions into the mountains or to the beaches, and a wonderful spot for river swimming very close by. The daily announcements of produce available in the market square were a highlight among many of the holiday

“Lovely family house in lovely village in great location to explore surrounding areas”

We stayed for a week at this Gite in Tuchan and can recommend it wholeheartedly as both a property and a location. Property has all amenities that you could need (washing machine, microwave, dvd player, satellite tv etc!) and is very comfortable and has been renovated to a very good standard. The owners were always a pleasure to deal with answering queries and providing lots of useful info. Tuchan itself is a lovely small village and is a great base for exploring surrounding areas, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Narbonne, St Cyprien, Collioure etc are all 35mins to just over an hour away. Plenty of nice beaches in easy proximity. A wonderful holiday, the best we've had in a long time, will come again!

Liked best: The lay-out of the house and the ease of access to the Corbières.
Liked least: It was very hot and humid, but that's the climate so c'est la vie. A couple of extra fans would have been great.

“A great base to stay to explore the region at any time of year”
Reviewed May 7, 2013 for a stay in September 2012

We have now stayed in the Warburtons house in Tuchan several times , it is a great place to stay to explore the region at any time of year; staying in the wintertime ,you can ski and explore the local cities, for example Carcassone (without the summer tourists) you can curl up on the sofa and read and relax (and enjoy the local wines!) ,we have even stayed over Christmas time ,which was lovely.
During the summer months, it is great to sit on the terrace, or ,if you need a swim and sunbathe, enjoy the local campsite pool ,where the food is good too!, there are also local river beds where the locals swim.
The house is very traditional ,but with every amenity you need, the village is the same, looking forward to going back again soon

“Quiet, traditional and great value property in centre of village”

This property is great value, an in a lovely, traditional and very quiet French village. Only a few steps away from the bakery, and it's not much further to the butchers, supermarket or one of several local wine caves. It's a great place to base yourself away from any hustle and bustle, but you can easily get to the coast, Carcasonne, or into the mountains of the Pyrenees. The property itself is a three story house with a great sundeck hidden away at the back.
