We've been staying at Villa Exner for the last 3 years and would not do the W2W cycling event if we can't stay there. The rooms are great, the service faultless and the dinner and breakfast just what cyclists need.

We have stayed at Villa Exner for 12 nights over new year. The hotel is a "re-formated" private villa with a big and beautiful garden, where there is a wonderful pool terrace and annexes with additional rooms. We, a family of three, had the entire left hand annex with two bedrooms and a living room in between and therfore had plenty of space and privacy.

Positives:
- The owners (an elderly German couple) were very nice and helpful and very discrete in the sense of leaving us our privacy and tranquility when they felt it was needed.
- We loved the house, the park like garden, the pool and our rooms, which were furbished and decorated simply perfectly
- We liked the food, which is all prepared by the Sabrina (the owner) who is not a chef, but has developed incredible cooking skills as an "amateur"...
- Though (see below) for breakfast some variation might be recommendable...
- This is really a place, where you can relax and re-charge by taking a day off and not leave...
- Very good restaurant and wine estate recommendations from the owners, who really know the region well

Negatives:
- The roofs of the annexes are incredibly "noisy" in the sense that you simply hear everything (wind, raindrops, birds), makes sleeping really a bit difficult
- Location: About 45 minutes from each Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Franschoek by car (though very safe and picturesque drives), Grabouw itself has really nothing to offer
- Breakfast: Very nicely and creatively prepared, but somewhat repetitive (especially staying 12 nights) with a fruit plate followed by eggs (different styles). A bit more variation or adding things like ham or cheese might improve the experience. Also not really for "big eaters"...

All in all:

Liked it a lot, would return for a few days of relaxing and tranquility mixed with some wine estate excursions. If you want to experience Cape Town and the Cape regions, this may be a bit remote!

Very, very nice, breakfast excellent. We were greeted by friendly hosts and we received an automatic upgrade to a large room.We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and enjoyed the area and surrounding scenery. We had a lovely meal one night at the "Poolroom" at the Oak valley wine estate which was arranged and suggested by our hosts. It was divine and also excellent. All and all we had a wonderful time!!!

Unfortunately, this was not on my top ten list of weekend getaways! The owners have no sense of humour, no sense of hospitality and no sense of style.

The venue is austere like its owners and with a cold room and harsh decor, this is one to be missed!

Nothing to redeem this "hotel" I'm afraid... just not worth the drive.

Very stylish luxury boutique hotel where hands-on owners ensure that all requirements are met in an understated professional and friendly manner. Superb and inventive breakfasts, different each day with wonderful evening meal if ordered in advance. The rooms, all different, spacious, were spacious, extremely comfortable and very stylishly and inventively decorated. All set in quiet and beautiful gardens.

.The owners are welcoming and offer helpful and useful advice for exploring this beautiful part of the Western Cape. The accommodation is superb - we had a garden room and honestly couldn't have asked for anything better. As for the meals - a Masterchef in that kitchen!! I ended up taking photographs of the food as it was presented so beautifully and then the taste treat - each mouthful, a delight of note! All I can say is that if you are in the Elgin area, look no further than Villa Exner!

Room Tip: The garden suite rooms are beautiful and look out on to the gardens and I think are more private.
