“Beautiful Villa! Lovely owners! Stunning Island!”
Reviewed April 26, 2014 for a stay in January 2014

This was our first trip to the Caribbean and St.Lucia was our island of choice. We narrowed our choice of villas to stay at, down to just two based on the pictures and reviews. Fortunately we saw all the great reviews on this villa's homeaway site and that, together with the open plan, island style look of the villa in the pictures made our decision. We had the most amazing time. Our 6 year old son, Jacob spent hours in the pool and Veron had even provided some toys for him to play with. Jacob slept in the downstairs room without a problem. I think the active days in the heat made him sleep very well. The option of either a single or double bed for him was great and yes there was a mosquito net in both rooms.
The villa was well appointed with all appliances you may need. We had fresh fruit blended smoothies every morning and Veron organized a private chef at the villa one night as we celebrated our 10 year anniversary during our stay.
We stayed for 10 nights and we were offered a deal which included the villa's own rental vehicle as we were staying for more than 7 nights and I must say this was an invaluable addition to our stay. It meant we were under no pressure to feel the need to use the car everyday if we wanted to just lounge around the pool, but we went all over the island. It was easy getting around because Rob took us on a tour the morning after we arrived to show us the Rodney Bay area and its surroundings including Restaurants, shops, some of his favorite beaches (which we would have not found on our own) and also places he performs such as The Landings on a Friday for sunset which is a must do.
The island is beautiful and the people are very friendly and helpful. The marina is a nice place to go for pizza and ice cream and they also have a great sushi place there too. My husband, Tom had his first kite surfing lesson on the beach just a few minutes from the villa. I think this was my favorite beach. Shallow water, horseriding, constant breeze. Its called Cotton Bay and there is a little local restaurant right on the beach called Marjorie's. Very laid back and very local. We loved it.
I must say Veron and Rob made us feel very welcome and they really helped us all to settle in very well and very quickly so we could enjoy our every minute. I would not think twice about recommending their place, it was everything we hoped for and more for our first trip to the islands. Its going to be hard to beat it on our next adventure.

“Good overal stay, but villa in need of TLC”
Reviewed March 8, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

people found this review helpful

First the positives. This villa is in a good location, both bedrooms have air con, although one of the rooms is downstairs which meant it was not suitable for our toddler, and it also has no mosquito net? You have a housekeeper that comes everyday, and Rob and Veron are very nice. Veron showed us around the area, got us membership at the Cotton Bay gym, which is a private resort, with pool and beach, which we also used regularly. Rob was spot on with restaurant recommendations; Buzz, Big Chef Steakhouse (excellent service, and they didnt charge for childrens drink or food and gave us a starter on the house), Spinnikers Beach Bar, and do go to the Friday night jump up. We took our 3 year old all 3 weeks we were there. We got there early. People are really friendly and the local food was great!! Don't be put off by anyone who say's it's not safe. Really, we did not feel unsafe at all. You also get use of the car, which is great, as we were really able to get out and about.

The downsides to this villa is the lack of air-con in the living area, which meant it was impossible to be in as the mosquito's are a nightmare, and we had every repellent going. We were bitten a lot! The pool is very cold. Generally the villa needs a lot of TLC. Things don't work properly, are in need of repair or updating. It is a traditional style villa which is very open to the elements. We found a lot of what appeared to be mice droppings and other 'large bugs'. It's impossible to shut out mosquito's due to the open nature of the villa build. When it rained there was a leak. The Wi-Fi is very temperamental, and I suspect the main router is located in Rob and Veron's house, which is behind the villa? The toilet in the main bedroom seemed to block/not flush properly, the shower had no power, there is no bath (nightmare if you have a small child), oven in the kitchen very difficult to light.

Overall we had a really good stay, although we weren't able to get the full use of the villa because of the lack of air-con in the living area. We also had to have our toddler in our bed for the duration, as I've explained, the 2nd bedroom was downstairs, and with the air-con going in the bedroom, and the lay out of the villa, it would be impossible to hear her in the night. There are a lot of maintenance issues and we would not choose to stay again. But would like to thank Rob & Veron for their hospitality.

Management Response
Mar 7, 2013
We have taken a few weeks since receiving this review to respond as we felt some parts of it were unfair despite the positive remarks and therefore we protested the review. We have tried to reach out to you guys via email since the review was posted but had no response, FlipKey has denied our protest so I feel it necessary now to offer a response from ourselves here openly moreso for the consideration of other potential guests that would now feel some doubt after reading this review despite all our other great reviews we have received from the start of the villa rental as we think some comments were unnecessary and only serve to negatively affect our villa bookings. Hopefully potential guests can realize that the irritability felt in Sonja’s review could also have been due to her being 6 months pregnant, which I’m sure can be difficult at times especially when one is away from home and therefore a little out of their comfort zone, which one recent client whom recently booked understood, when we answered the concerns asked about some of the comments in this review. Sonja, Jeremy and their daughter came to a number of my performances so we got chance to chat a lot and no complaints/concerns were ever voiced even when we asked if they were having a good time. It was always a positive response, so we were very surprised at the negative parts of their review.
We also asked the guests who stayed immediately after (just 10 days ago) how their villa experience was and they said they enjoyed it thoroughly and didn’t experience any interference to their relaxation at the villa from mosquitos or problems with the villa. They did say they would leave their own review soon also. So, to state clearly our response, we will address each point;

“one of the rooms is downstairs which meant it was not suitable for our toddler, and it also has no mosquito net?”

When our guests have a toddler or baby whom they would prefer to sleep in their own bedroom we provide a crib or a small bed/mattress in the master bedroom so their infant can be close to them. Most guests in the past prefer not to have a mosquito net on the bed in the second bedroom, however there is one available if needed and requested.

“lack of air-con in the living area, which meant it was impossible to be in as the mosquito's are a nightmare, and we had every repellent going”

It does clearly state online that only the 2 bedrooms have AC. And due to the style of the villa being open plan as in, it is open to the outside thru the wooden louvres and the large double doors and windows, it retains its rustic Caribbean charm. Once the windows are opened to enjoy the constant Atlantic coastal breeze, the mosquitos are less, as the air flows through the villa and AC is not required or desired by most in the living area. So this is a first, for a comment such as this. There are plenty of different insect repellants from natural ones to others containing deet that can be bought locally and they work effectively.

“The pool is very cold.”

The pool is a large plunge pool and therefore heats each day from the sun to a comfortable temperature. There has been very little rain for a few months now so with cloudless nights and this time of year it is a little cooler in the night which will obviously lower the temperature of the pool, but only first thing in the morning. On the contrary we hear more often than not that the pool is a lovely temperature.

“Generally the villa needs a lot of TLC. Things don't work properly, are in need of repair or updating.”

It is unfortunate and potentially damaging to our villa reputation when statements such as these are made. The villa is constantly maintained between guests and we as the owners are always very hands on to make sure the villa remains at the standard, if not better than when it first began. The kitchen has very good quality untensils (“All Clad”, “Christofle”) and appliances (which are listed online). And everything is checked to be working before guests arrive. The only thing we were made aware of during your stay was the inability to get the DVD working, which we explained and demostrated once asked so you knew how to operate it.

“We found a lot of what appeared to be mice droppings and other 'large bugs”.

Again, quite a shocking statement to make, however whilst not discounting you may see an occasional “bug” as the villa is open plan and in the Caribbean, generally we would hardly see any. Some guests before also have mistaken lizard droppings for that of mice and whilst that can be a common and understandable mistake to make, to state it in a review, is unfair to us. Lizards by the way are quite small, harmless and found in most places on the island so not too worry if one was were seen on a wall in the house. They eat bugs and mosquitos! You may have seen a mouse as most houses around the world may just have one or two every now and again, we put down rodent tablets and also spray for bugs once a month like most homes and this keeps our pest control efficient for the most part.

“When it rained there was a leak.”

We were informed of the leak in the bedroom by a guest directly to us during their stay giving us the opportunity to fix the issue instead of voicing it online without our knowledge, which was just about a month before you. Due to hardly any rain and no other report of the leak from any other guest we thought it was fixed until we read otherwise in your review. So we have addressed this problem again and tested it with recent rain and it now appears to be resolved.

“The Wi-Fi is very temperamental.”

The wifi is tested with my laptop in most places in the villa and works fine. Maybe its not as fast as some other countries that guests are from and granted some areas are stronger than others but for the most part there is coverage by way of extenders/booster in the villa. There are times when LIME, the internet provider works on the line and it would affect connectivity and I remember they have been making some changes on the network lately which would also explain it. But again, never had this complaint before.

“The toilet in the main bedroom seemed to block/not flush properly, the shower had no power, there is no bath.”

The flapper chain on the toilet simply needed adjustment which has been fixed now. Had we known of the issue during your stay it could’ve been addressed immediately too. We have since checked the shower for pressure and don’t find it lacking power. We state on the villa site online that there is no bath, so no surprises there!

“oven in the kitchen very difficult to light.”

We provide long matches and also a stove lighter. The stainless steel stove is simply lit manually through a door at the bottom of the oven which is explained to arriving guests. And has never been an issue for any other past guests. Sorry this was found to be difficult for you. The replacement oven we will install when necessary, will surely have an auto light switch.

“There are a lot of maintenance issues and we would not choose to stay again.”

We believe this statement to be unfair and uncalled for too. We address any maintenance issues straight away if we are informed of any from our guests. We also personally spot check the villa to make sure everything is up to scratch in between guest arrivals.

“There's simply nothing better!”

If you’re hesitant like I was about booking a private vacation house then you need to read this review. Trust me, if you choose Villa Zatarra you have nothing to worry about! I looked into A LOT of different rental properties, read countless reviews and emailed plenty of owners. No property looked as serene, no villa had 5 star guest ratings across the board, and no one was as patient, informative and quick to respond as Veron. This is just part of why we chose Villa Zatarra for our honeymoon.

Villa Zatarra is simply beyond your wildest dreams! Extremely spacious, amazing views and an outdoor living atmosphere. But the best part of the villa is the owners, Veron and Rob. They are unbelievably welcoming and kind. On our first full day in St Lucia, Veron spent the afternoon showing us around the area and getting us comfortable with driving on the other side of the road. She took us to a great coffee shop, Rituals, and showed us every beach, restaurant and hotel in the area. She told us about different events happening at these places and when the best time is to go. Had it not have been for Veron taking the time to get us acquainted I think we would have missed out on some of the best parts of the island. She was kind enough to check in from time to time to make sure we had everything we needed. She offered to book dinner reservations and tours and gave tips on the most cost effective options. She coordinated our helicopter transfer from the airport on the south to the closer one more north on the island. (Which is something I would recommend trying to budget for- $300USD for two of us. Pricy but incredible!) She arranged for a trusted friend and driver, Big Runner to pick us up.

He pointed out the sights as we traveled the short distance into Rodney Bay and waited while we picked up some necessities at the grocery store. He even recommended a beer, Piton; it was all we drank on our vacation! He became our driver whenever we needed him and would show us around when he dropped us off. Big runner, you are the champion!

If you have the opportunity to see Rob play, take it! We visited a nearby hotel one evening and sat by the water, sipping champagne and cocktails, in awe as Rob played the saxophone. He came over to introduce himself right after his set and spent the evening enjoying drinks and chatting. We were also fortunate enough to join Rob on a sunset cruise from a beautiful hotel with the Pitons as the back drop. It was picturesque as we saw a rainbow sprout from the beach, arch over the rainforest covered mountains and plunge in the turquois water. Grooving to Rob’s velvet sax playing and enjoying the company of the other vacationers then finishing the cruise with a hoppin’ dance party!
Rob and Veron are the perfect hosts; they made us feel like we were their number one priority. They make the already amazing villa that much better. It truly is a different way to vacation. With a car and local cellphone provided, we had the freedom to come and go as we please which made it easy to do everything we wanted to. We spent several of our days just lounging by the pool and grilling on the charcoal barbeque. The full kitchen made cooking convenient and with the housekeeper, Mary to tidy up, it was easy. The gardener, John would pick coconuts for us, chill the water and cut up the meat.

The villa is magnificent. The master bedroom is spectacular! From the four poster bed draped in netting to the massive open concept shower, it’s a dream. Only to be outdone by the breathtaking views from the giant balcony off the bedroom! A hammock to relax in and feel the breeze off the ocean and a little dining table, great for coffee and breakfast in the morning. The main floor is all open concept, with beautiful stone floors. Everything is very well kept by the housekeeper, Mary; the villa was always sparkling clean and smelling of lemon grass and the ocean. Veron’s history in interior design is obvious. Every detail is thought of and put together in the most beautiful way. The little added touches sprinkled throughout the house make it feel like home.

Lastly, I have to mention Chef Busby. We were to be celebrating my husband’s birthday while on our honeymoon. We wanted to do something special and Veron had recommended Chef Busby to come in and cook us dinner. We discussed details over email before arriving, and then Veron took us to meet her and go over our menu selection. Chef Busby arrived with an assistant and they worked together to set up a beautiful dinner on our balcony, overlooking the ocean while we sipped wine and relaxed. The three course meal they served was outstanding! We had crème brule for dessert and my husband and I both agree that it was the most delicious thing we have ever eaten. I would go back to St Lucia for the crème brule alone. It really was that good!

St Lucia is a beautiful place, with kind people and an awe-inspiring landscape. It offers everything you could wish to do on a vacation. Staying at Villa Zatarra was the best vacation of my life. I can’t wait to return again, so long as Rob and Veron are still there. Thank you so much to Rob, Veron, Chef Busby, Big Runner, John and Mary for making our honeymoon spectacular! There is not a single thing I would change, nothing could have made the villa, the company and the honeymoon better! Simply put, this is clearly the superior way to vacation!

Lauren & Matt Caravaggio

Wow!!! What a beautiful review. Thanks guys for taking the time to write such a detailed account of your stay with us. As you know the reviews are a big part of the decision process for other potential guests to our villa and I'm sure if they only read your review alone that should convince them enough of what to expect.
It was really good meeting you both. Continue to enjoy married life and all the fun that comes with it and we hope to see you and your friends back down here sometime soon.

“Our best rental villa ever!”

My wife, my son (who was 5 yo at the time) and I stayed at Villa Zatarra for 3 weeks in January 2012. We paid a reasonable extra in order to rent the jeep of the owners.

We are "discerning" travelers, I would even say difficult ones in the sense that our standards are high (we travel business class, stay at 4.5 and 5 stars hotels, eat gourmet food, etc).

I will not repeat here all the nice things written in the previous reviews, but I will only say that they are all true, and more. Quite frankly, compared to other similar options in St-Lucia (e.g. luxury hotels or villas of the same caliber), this particular property offers a really great ratio quality/price and, as a bonus, the owners are quite helpful whenever you have questions or special needs. I'm not saying it's cheap, I'm saying the ratio quality / price is very good.

“Three idyllic weeks”
Reviewed August 13, 2012 for a stay in February 2012

Rob cared for us, from the ease of being picked up, the arrangement for the car, the first morning tour around the end of the island, and his general friendliness in inviting us to his performances and to lunch at the end. He was responsive to any questions and needs, which were few. The two of us absolutely enjoyed all of the time spent there, and also meeting interestng couples all from different countries, and enjoying time spent with them. The Marina was the center of our activities for groceries, dining, and general hanging around. We are grateful to Rob and his family, for we even received an invitation to his son's brthday party down at a beach with all his other island friends.
