“This place is definitely style over substance!”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Let's start with the positives...

Room 2, where we stayed, was a very stylish room and the bathroom was very nice too. I loved the shutters above the bath and I enjoyed sitting in the bath whilst watching the cyclists cycle past or sit in the village coffee shop for a break.

The décor is very nice throughout as the restaurant and bar area are both shabby chic with some unusual touches and tea is even served in vintage tea sets. It was the first time I had seen that in a pub.

The coffees in the bar area are very nice and the biscuits with them very nice too.

Now for the negatives...

My biggest issue with this place was the food as the menu just didn't do it for me. I usually always find something I like anywhere I go, not this time. Some of the classics, which you would normally find in any good British pub, were missing and had been replaced by dishes which were really not to my taste. I don't particularly like anchovies or smoked food for that matter. So, in the end, I had a burger for a main (boring!) and a vanilla ice-cream (even more boring!).

Also, we had booked with Mr and Mrs Smith but we got no special treatment - despite the fact we had mentioned we were celebrating a special occasion and The complimentary Mr and Mrs Smith 'extra' was not what we had been promised either. We had been told that we would be getting 'a sample platter of culinary treats from the kitchen, including a jar of chutney, a small bag of spelt crackers and some cheese' and what we actually got was a piece of cake which again was pretty boring.

So, in short, yes worth stopping here for a meal but do make sure you have a look at the menu before you get everyone out of the car...

We've just returned from an overnight stay at The Swan, Wedmore recently. Our room was one of the larger rooms at the front of the pub/hotel. On the whole, I'd say it was quite a positive experience.

Our nicely decorated & equipped room was large with a very comfortable bed. The large bathroom had a generously sized bath and separate shower with a dinner plate shower head. An abundance of toiletries and towels were also provided. The young staff were very welcoming and helpful. As we stayed on a Sunday night, we were already made aware that only bar snacks would be served. We really enjoyed these, and depending on how many you ordered, a satisfying meal could be obtained. I particularly liked my choices of fried Cornish squid in a cider batter with chunky chips. Breakfast the next morning was very nice as well, and a far higher standard than the usual breakfast fare served in hotel chains.

There were, however, some negatives. As has been mentioned in earlier reviews, the lighting was rather dim - especially in the bathroom where one of the ceiling spotlights wasn't working. The bedroom was also very warm at night and as it was positioned over the entrance to the pub, it was also quite noisy. One of my bugbears also reared its ugly head - dirty cutlery and glassware.

Despite a few reservations, I would probably stay here again as the pub is charming and the village itself is so lovely. I do think, however, that £120 for B&B in a pub is too expensive.

We stayed at The Swan for two nights earlier this year and I have to stay our experience couldn't have been better.

The room was spacious with a huge bed, lovely decor and amazing bathroom. The food was really top quality and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The price, for what you get is really reasonable and it is at a great location in Somerset. Will definitely return!

The whole place looks quite stylish, and our room was very nice, stylish and contemporary with a good big bath and bathroom, but there was a light out in the bathroom. We had booked a room but hadn't been told that as it was a Sunday we couldn't have dinner, only bar snacks, which weren't brilliant and very little choice. As we had walked 24 miles to get there it was a bit disappointing not to be able to have a decent meal.
The staff were a bit casual in their attitude.
Breakfast was again more a case of style over substance.
We came back to Wedmore only 2 weeks after we stayed here - and chose not to stay here again. Very disappointing really.

Stayed here in January. Fantastic. Reasonable price, good location, excellent food and a lovely roll top Bath. My other half loved it!

Easy to get to most of the attractions in Somerset. Excellent local cider too! We will definitely be going back again.

We recently stayed here for our first wedding anniversary having booked through Mr & Mrs Smith. As others have said, it is an inn rather than a hotel so the provisions in the room were fairly basic. We stayed in a 'big room' with a lovely comfy big bed. It was right above the bar so incredibly noisy if you were hoping for a quiet early night.

The food at the restaurant/bar is very good quality. The place is clearly popular as it was busy throughout our stay. The staff were friendly and helpful.

For the price point I would have expected some little extras in the room. Beautifully decorated but you don't feel spoilt.
