Reviewed November 13, 2011

I have visited this venue on three occasions recently. the food was excellent and it had a busy. vibrant, trendy atmosphere.
Loved the lampshade chandelier in the restaurant.

Called in for afternoon coffee, liked the atmosphere so much I booked a room for the night instead of staying at a nearby hotel. It was the smallest of the rooms (£85) but big enough. Nice touches like proper coffee and some wonderful bath and hair products. No shower, but a big enamel jug by the bath.
You can eat in either the bar area or more formal restaurant. same menu. Grilled steak was succulent and the venison delicious. Puddings superb. service was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. While the bed was super comfy the room not well sound proofed and noise from the hotel (a workman and drill!!) woke us at 8am. Breakfast was again superb. I wanted to stay longer if just to taste the pheasant and butter beans that was on offer at lunch for £10. Downside was the noisy room (don't book no5 or 6 at the top of the stairs) and the lack of a proper hotel check-in. You have to wander into the bar or restaurant to find (enthusiastic!) help but its off putting for both guests and diners.

Room Tip: Don't get a room at the tip of the stairs. The big doubles at the front have large free standing...

We called in just for a meal and found it a very dissapointing experience. When paying our bill we told the front of house we were dissapppointed and why and he said "sorry" ! Apart from finding the service less than average I ordered the only vegetarian option and it was served with beetroot. As this is the only vegetable I do not like I asked if it could be substituted with anything else and was told that it could not. Therefore I was served a spoonful of lentils cooked in cider with a slice of goats cheese on top and charged over £9. The food was delicious but the size of the portion and the lack of flexibliity with the menu was very poor indeed. We will not be going back.
