“Basic Barefoot”

What a great place! Don't expect luxury, but it is very comfortable. The location is so special, across the tiny local road from a long white sand deserted beach, and a short walk uphill to the Tip of Borneo. The on site restaurant is very basic, but the small menu is tasty, and home cooked. Try for one of the"Hill" villas, with amazing sunsets from your own deck

Room Tip: Hill Villa, with a view

This is a sleepy little part of the world if you just want to kick back and chill out without too many mod cons. The rooms are clean and basic, with a nice little deck out the front. Big tip book the ones facing the ocean the others are around the back and do not have a nice outlook, a friend of ours got one of these and it had been sprayed with some sort of pesticide - not good, he was moved begrudgingly the next day(he did after all book the front room).
You are very close to the beach and the staff are friendly and do try to be very helpful. Plus's are clean unpolluted water and surrounds.

Room Tip: Make sure you book the rooms facing the sea. Dont be too hung up about WiFi.

Tommy's Place at the Tip Of Borneo is a great location. It's located steps to a beautiful white sandy beach and the warm South China Sea waiting for ideal swimming. Walk in the warm water and start swimming. The 3 Chalet's are the best although pricey. Also, a 15-minute walk to the Tip of Borneo where you see the Philippines and the South China and Sulu Sea meet. Stay away from the standard rooms if you can afford a Chalet. The new addition accommodations are an eyesore for the beautiful Borneo environment. Typical motel style. Reception check in and check out is very good. Most of the staff speaks poor English if any. The cleaning women are laid back and lazy. Our Chalet #1 was clean and comfortable but pillows too hard. Management needs to consider offering softer pillows. There's a view from the 3 Chalets but not breathtaking as advertised. Too much shrubbery blocking a clear view where the Chalet's are located are on a hill behind the reception area. The Chalets are not on the beach. They are in the shrubbery. There's a security guard at night. He stays down the hill for the Chalets at the reception. Anyone can have access riding up the hill on a dirt road and behind the Chalets. Only the screen doors locks. The glass sliding door does not. This is not good for security purposes. There's no small wash cloth for showering and no hand towel. Just two bath towels that have seen better days. Two complimentary bottles of water a plus. No TV or telephone in the Chalets. Mosquito spray provided - you'll need it. There's a small rack for hanging your clothes. No clothes dresser or hangers provided. Few toiletries - soap and shampoo. The reception area has an excellent supply of English language novels to read, especially of you like mystery. Breakfast is very poor. The only plus is the staff will make an omelette. Coffee should be improved - juice too. Lunch and dinner menu very poor. Look for the restaurant down the road before you reach Tommy's Place. The menu selection is better. Free Internet is a plus but it's only available in the reception area not in the Chalet. Management needs to provide guests better and more friendly professional service if they continue to ask for the pricey accommodations for a Chalet.

Room Tip: Select the pricey Chalet. There are 3 Chalets. Chalet #2 has the better view. Stay away from standa...

Staff was friendly and not far from beach and Simpang Menggayau. Beach was clean, water was clearer than island near KK and deserted. Perfect for snorkelling.
Room condition and toilet was good with water heater. However, bath water pressure was a bit low for a pleasure bath.
Overall, we are amazed with such pleasant stay at this isolated part of Sabah.
Our journey from KK took us about 4 hours and not 3 hours as anticipated as we stop by at some fruits stall by the roadside and toilet break at rest area in Kota Marudu. Road maintenance work at parts of road at Kota Marudu and the road leading in Tip of Borneo was bumpy might also lengthen the travel time. Luckily the road sign leading to the lodge was clear as by the time we arrived, it was already dark.
As per informed by the staff there, sunset estimated at 6.10pm, so don't travel late if don't want to missed the sunset viewing.

the staff is so friendly here! they were very wellcoming when we arrived for our 2 night-stay.

the rooms in the chatelets were basic, but clean, the beach was just a few meters away (but you ll have to cross a small road).

the food at the restaurant is cooked by the staff from the reception and they do a great job :) unfortunately on our first night most items of the already small menu werent available but the next day we were able to try the fish and mixed veggies (loved both!). breakfast is basic but also good.

we were unlucky with the weather but rented bodyboards anyway and had a fun time in the water! the walk to the tip of borneo is short and we had a nice time there. if its raining, you can borrow a book and read on your small personal veranda.

this has nothing to do with the hostel but i need to mention it to other travellers because it caused me some suffering: in the water there is no problem, but we sat on the sand for 10 min and i had about 35 flysand-bites all over my body! the itching seriously was not bearable and i couldnt sleep. the itches left scars and the itching lasted so much longer than mosquito bites. repellent could help but i am not sure about that.

We stayed in a few places at the tip and Tommy's was by far the best. The chalets were nicely done, and the villas looked excellent too. My only worry is that there didn't seem to be many people staying in any of the places at the tip, so I hope they are able to make a good living as it really is paradise. We met Tommy who was very friendly, and the staff, although just local and probably not highly experienced, were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely come and stay here again.

The last time we went to simpang mengayau in 2009, it was like a dead town, 3 years later, it was alive and triving... We stayed in tommy's for two nights and have nothing but praises, we stayed in one of the villas for rm280 per night, fraction of what it will cost to stay in almost similar resorts/hotels in other places, the service may not be like those in top of the range hotel but the view from the villas, perched on a hill overlooking the beach is priceless...we absolutely love the bamboo terrace/balcony in front which is almost the same size of the room (villas)... Activities in the bay seemed to be limited to beach activities but the resort is offering a snorkeling package we're looking forward to trying next time we're there... I definitely recommend this resort and the bay ( simpang mengayau ) at the tip of borneo is perfect for anyone looking for a beach holiday minus the tourist touts and the chaos of boracay or bali
