Tommy's Place, Tip of Borneo
Ranked #5 of 11 Kudat B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Tommy's Place is overlooks the beautiful beach at the Tip of Borneo. We stayed in the new villas, perched above the original rooms and restaurant. The view was outstanding, and the room was a very pleasant surprise. Tastefully decorated, fully equipped (mini fridge, A/C, comfortable beds), and with its own thatched-roof covered veranda - separate from the main villa. This area ended up being the focal point of our stay, and we spent our evenings watching the sun set over the South China Sea.

The location couldn't be better, the staff are friendly and Tommy himself is an engaging and caring manager, and an interesting person to talk to. The beach in front of Tommy's is among the best we found in Borneo. It's quiet, cleaner than any other beach in the area (the other beaches around the Tip are terribly rubbished) - it's long and the water is amazing.

We highly recommend Tommy's Place at the Tip.

Room Tip: If you can, stay in the new villas - best room and best view.

A very pleasant little guest house just across a quiet road from a huge unspoilt beach. Tommy's has rooms and chalets. We stayed in a room, only the triples have double beds, forcing couples to have to pay the triple fee, even though the room is the same. That said, because we stayed for several days we negotiated a discount. The rooms are pleasant, very clean, with attached bathroom with hot water, ac and balconies facing the sea, though you can hear but can't quite see the sea.

It's about a 30 second walk to the beach, and though this is the most popular beach in the area at times you can still be the only person on it.

At the time we were there Tommy was expanding the Property to include more upmarket accommodation and a new restaurant.

The girls who manage the property and lovely and sweet and try their best to help. They help create a quiet, friendly atmosphere. Usually the place is very quiet but it depends on who else is staying. Occaisionally either here or down by tip top and the rungus long house corporate events are organised with non stop karaoke, which can totally ruin an otherwise wonderfully peaceful spot, so check if anything is planned.

Breakfast is good, but other meals here are not great, so head to tip top or the tip of Borneo for lunch and dinner.

They offer free bicycles to guests but the quality is very bad and only useful for going to either end of the road, no further. Avoid the boat trip to the lighthouse - we got stranded at sea after the engine fell off the boat!

All in all we had a lovely stay at this peaceful, friendly spot.

Me and two friends came here after a very busy few weeks travelling in Sabah and Sarawak. Was the best decision. Originally planned to stay 2 days here ended up spending 4 days here. The rooms are clean and comfortable , they are basic but you wouldn't want more. The location is ideal right across the road from the beach. I have never felt such relaxation as I have here. You could also take the bike out and go for bike exploring all the small villages in the area and the other beach coves.

I highly recommend this place we looked around the area at a few other place but Tommys Place was by far the best.

Spent a night here after a long drive all the way from Kinabalu Park. We arrived in Kudat late in the evening and gave them a call to hold a room for us. Getting from town to Tommy's Place was about a 30 minute drive. Found the place easily, check-in was hassle free and the reception was very friendly. They were also nice enough to keep the kitchen open and we had delicious burgers (RM10) sent to our room at 10pm before they closed for the night. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable and each had a small patio in front to chill at. As it was dark the night before when we arrived, i was amazed by the view when i opened the door in the morning. The beach just across the small road is fine and clean and stretches long into the distance, and best of all there was not a single soul on it. They have got lots of activities on offer here, diving in the nearby sea or taking a boat trip out to the lighthouse (gave that a miss as i have dived most of the places in the area when i sailed over from Singapore some time back), but what i did experience the last time was indeed amazing and much better diving than in KK. Kayaks (Rm50/day), Surfboards (Rm50/day), Motorbike (Rm45/day) and lots more are readily available for hire and i would have loved to have a go if we were not in such a rush for time. In fact, i would have really loved to spend as much time as i possibly could here just lazing on the beach doing nothing, so much so that i even marked out the trees on which to tie my hammock on the next time i'm here, hopefully soon! But we had to leave as we had a dinner appointment in KK. The Tip Of Borneo is just a short walk away and definately worth a visit, which we manged to do in the morning before the tour groups arrived (another perk of staying here) and i would really love to make the trip back again just to catch the tip at sunset, which i have heard is amazing. Thanks Tommy for a wonderful place and we really do hope to be back again soon!

PS: While we were driving there we came to a T junction with the sign to 'Simpang Mengayau' pointing to the right while our GPS told us to take the left turn. We turned left and went a few hundred metres before turning back and deciding to trust the road sign instead. What we realized the next day making our way out was that both turns bring you to the tip, the right turn following the road sign is about 14km, and the left turn with the gps is only 8km. Both roads are similarly paved, or not. Just something interesting.

We stayed in a villa for 4 days, 3 nights and had a magical time.

The villa was clean, spacious and comfortable. The bed was perfectly positioned so we could enjoy the wonderful sea view without getting out of bed. The large gazebo in front of each villa has shelving, a small fridge, a couple of tables and plenty of chairs.

It took just under 2 minutes to walk up the hill to the villas from the admin block (and less to walk down again) so the distance was not a problem.

Breakfast was very good - perfectly cooked scrambled eggs, sausages, baked beans, cereal, toast and spreads, fresh fruit (watermelon, bananas, papaya and more), juice and hot drinks. It was great. There were also fried noodles which we didn't try.

We knew there would be limited supplies at the tip of Borneo, so we brought a sliced wholemeal loaf from KK and staff kept it in the fridge for us so we could enjoy wholemeal toast each morning.

There is a variety of water sports equipment for hire, plus bikes and motorbikes. I hired a bike one morning and enjoyed the ride but actually everything was within easy walking distance. We loved having time to walk and enjoy the wonderful views - simple local homes, surf, crabs in the sand, coconut palms, great bird life, including groups of huge frigate birds. Sea breezes kept temperatures very pleasant.

The beach was as clean as most beaches in this part of the world. Just down the road, we saw Howard sending local children off armed with plastic rubbish bags, presumably to help keep the beaches clean.

There is a secluded beach just near Tommy's that staff had suggested guests visit. It was maybe a 5 minute walk away, through an old coconut plantation. We were the only people there and we swam, snorkelled and relaxed in a world of our own. The bay was sheltered; the water was clear and warm and the multicoloured corals in good shape. Although the coral was not swarming with fish, there were enough different fish species to keep us interested.

The tip of Borneo had plenty to explore so we made several trips there, including two visits timed to catch the stunning sunset.

The absolute highlight at Tommy's Place was the staff. They were full of smiles and were very keen to help in any way they could. Rozi's charm, competence and enthusiasm to make our holiday a wonderful one made her stand out, even amongst her warm and helpful colleagues. She did everything possible to look after us - finding answers to our tricky questions, ensuring our room, food and entire stay were all we wanted and more.
We met Tommy later in our stay and he was just as previous reviewers had described - warm, sincere and keen to do everything possible to make Tommy's Place a wonderful holiday destination. There is no doubt he is succeeding - there were plenty of very satisfied guests there when we stayed.

We did not visit any of the neighbouring islands and explore all they have to offer so we are very keen to return and investigate. That will be a good excuse to stay at Tommy's again (not that we need one!)

Room Tip: Villas are private, spacious and have wonderful views if your budget can cope - they are a bit more...

We spend 2 days 1 night and it was a wrong choice, should have spend 3 days 2 night. It's located about 800meters away from tip of Borneo. Expect nothing but nature over there. It's a great place to chill and relax for the whole day. The huge wave is great for surfing. Good thing they have internet over there so you can at least keep updated over there. Room are good enough and a front balcony with chairs and table for you to read books and enjoy the sea breeze. Definitely will go back again.

Room Tip: Book in advance!

This is a no frills budget place, so go with reasonable expectations and you won't be disappointed. It has only eight rooms with the twin rooms going for only RM130. The rooms are clean and still newish; and really that's all that is important. The room comes with hot water in the bathrooms, air-cond and ceiling fan, kettle and no television. Who comes here to watch television anyway?

The rooms are arranged side-by-side longhouse style facing the beach across the road, each with its own terrace where you can hang out to listen to the sound of the waves. Breakfast is provided in the morning, nothing fancy, bread, cereal and fried noodles with tea and coffee.

Pantai Kalampunian, the beach across the road is probably one of the prettiest in mainland Sabah. White powdery sand, clear water and nice waves with a strong breeze night and day from the South China Sea. There's a bit of flotsam and jetsam on the beach, especially towards the end of the bay. Being a peninsula, on the other side, is the Sulu Sea, where the water is calmer. At the end of the road is a dramatic headland, the so-called Tip of Borneo, where the South China sea meets the Sulu sea. A beautiful spot, especially when the sun sets.
At the other end of the road is Howard's Place, which is a small open air restaurant run by an Englishman.

Tommy's Place is a place to go just to hang out and do nothing. The place is very laid-back and there still isn't the tourist hordes. You may even have the beach to yourself at times. There are really only four places to stay, Tommy's Place and its next door neighbour and the TSM Merrimas Villa and Simpang Mengayau chalets up the headland.

Bring a good book, plenty of food and refreshments, even a laptop (there is wi-fi) and just kick back and relax at Tommy's Place.

Go for it!
