“Bad experience in the restaurant - won't go again”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2011

Sad to say would not visit again: Booked for Sunday lunch - were not residents. The waitress showed us to our table and then left us for 15 minutes with a menu but without asking us if we wanted any water (we already had drinks from the bar) or if we wanted a wine list. We had to ask to order our food. We then waited another 10 minutes before being asked if we wanted to order wine. It came after another 5-10 minutes, not chilled but in plenty of iced water. It was plonked on the table. We were not shown the wine, not offered to taste it or to have it poured. This we asked for and the waitress did it but did seem very surprised. Our starters came at last. They were fine. Our mains came again after a lengthy wait without any waitress contact at all re. length of wait etc. Three of our group had ordered the roast beef. It came very rare, bloody to be honest. We asked if it could be cooked more. The waiter (a bit more clued up than the last one) took it away and the dinners were soon redelivered but to be honest were still very rare and in fact fairly raw which was not to the liking of our party. The vegetables came in a single small dish were fairly inadequate and more importantly quite overcooked/mushy - esp the brocolli. In addition to the lack of attention/service the other party in the dining room consisted of a group of 4 adults and 4 children, 3 of which ran round the restaurant making a lot of noise which made it difficult for us to hear ourselves across the table. Two mains were well eaten. Three hardly eaten. When we complained to the owner/manageress she was very hostile to our complaints and made us feel that it was our fault. I believe the waitresses/waiters were not properly trained and just didn't know how to delivery customer service. The owner/manageress was so defensive to the point of being rude. It was a treat to take our grown up children out for sunday lunch and it ended up being an unfortunate and unpleasant experience. The bill was reduced by 50% but we would have rather had a pleasant lunch and paid what we expected to pay rather than have to complain. We are not complainers but this was a joke. I would definitely not go to the Peacock again and when we then went to visit our local pub afterwards we ended telling about 12 people about our bad experience. It could have been resolved so easily but there you go.

We stayed for two nights at the Peacock. The staff are exceptional - courteous, welcoming and helpful - just lovely. The food is excellent too with a varied menu and great breakfast. We just hope they have got it together regarding the cleanliness of the rooms since we stayed. We were booked into a lovely room but it hadn't been hoovered, the bath was dirty, the toilet had not been cleaned at all, the phone was thick with dust, the cups and saucers had been poorly cleaned. The the duty manager immediately moved us to another room. and said they had had problems with the cleaner recently. This is an unacceptible explanation to a guest. I asked why the rooms weren't checked before they were let, and she said that she hadn't had time. Not finding the time to do so, loses good will and business! The next room was much cleaner, but the bath still had a solid tidemark which I cleaned myself! It was also in the older part of the building and my husband at 6ft 2 could not stand up in the room so found it a stressful place to stay. It is not possible to raise the beams, but The Peacock could easily raise the standard of room cleanliness to match the excellent food and warm front of house staff approach.

Absolutly georgous. 4 poster bed in beautiful traditional room. 3 course bistro meal and home cooked english breakfast - all for £99 per couple per night. Cant ask for anything more.
The Peacock Inn is actually about 40 mins drive out of nottingham, in the tiny village of Redmile, deep in the countryside where the birds singing were the only things loud enough to wake us every morning.
Rooms clean and large with all necessary ammenaties, traditionally decorated and very relaxing.
Staff could not have been more helpful or smiley if they'd tried. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was carried out cheerfully. The owner even jump started our car for us in the morning - ringing around all of his friends in the village to find a set of jump leads. Brilliant!
Food was lovely, lots of choice and extremely tasty.
Cant wait to return to this little piece of heaven!

My main reason for writing this review is to correct the text title (map and postcode are correct), as this is a nice hotel it would be a shame to miss out on if looking in the area (and probably not what you want if looking in Nottingham!)
We spend one night at this hotel on our tandem tour John O'Groats to Lands End, booking the same day by phone because it was conveniently on our route past Belvoir Castle.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful and we were kindly offered the Garden Room restaurant area as an overnight tandem garage. The hotel was fairly empty when we stayed and we were given the beautiful "Rabbit" room which has a king size bed but VERY low beams, doorways etc. (this room really should be called the "Duck"!).
We didn't eat in the restaurant, but we had a drink in the bar which has a very friendly local pub atmosphere, and enjoyed a good breakfast in the morning, again served with a smile.
