A 15 minute taxi ride from Perugia airport costs about 42E. We arrived early but they were able to accommodate us within the half hour and offered us tea in the delightful gardens whilst we waited. We had a triple room (3 female friends). The extra bed was sturdy and confortable (not alwasys th ecase when you have an extra bed). The room was big enough for all of us. Everything was lovely and clean and robes and slippers were provided. Wifi connections were good and easily available. The bathroom was spacious and clean and there was plenty of hot water. They accommodated an off menu salad as a light lunch on our first day and accommodated our every request in a friendly and professional way. There was a lovely breakfast with plenty of choice in a bright summer room and we ate 2 evening meals at the hotel restaurant. The food was delicious and well priced. We used the spa which is small but not to it's detriment. The 2 treatments we had were both excellent. We were able to relax from the outset and the service and our experience was consistantly high over the 3 days right through to allowing us extra time in the room to accommodate a later flight home and ordering us our taxi. One last note, for those without a car, there is a regular bus service to Perugia for 2E from right outside the hotel and from there we connected by bus to Assisi as well. it was great to be without a car!

The hotel is beautiful, warm and comfortable. We decided to stay at Alla Posta dei Donini for one night to get away from home. I chose this specific hotel because it had a spa and I wanted to relax after suffering from a cold during the previous week. The hotel's parking was a short walk away from the reception area, allowing guests the tranquility of walking through the manicured gardens without seeing a parking lot full of cars. As previous reviews stated, the town of San Martino in Campo didn't appear to be anything special, but the hotel itself was situated in a way that I felt like I was in the countryside rather than in the village. Our room was in the main villa, which was built in the 16th century (although I think it was reconstructed in the 18th century). The room featured a large double bed with four pillows (a real treat since I sleep with three myself), an updated bathroom with a separate shower and deep bathtub, bathrobes and slippers, controllable heating, a television, and charming wood beams on the vaulted ceilings. There was some structural damage (large cracks in the walls), but this didn't bother us much as we were staying in a historic building. There view from the room looked over the gardens and the atrium-turned-breakfast-area. The only negative aspect of the room was that the t.v. was quite old and didn't have any international channels due to some technical difficulties of the hotel. However, there was free internet. The breakfast buffet, which was included in the price of 99 euro a night, was sufficient. The waiters were nice, there was a mixture of sweet and salty food, tea, marmalades, and cheeses. Were were slightly disappointed that there were no longer any cornetti (croissants) when we arrived for breakfast. There was also a little confusion regarding the time of breakfast, because nobody informed us of the times when we arrived and we read one sign saying "7-10" and another saying "7-10.30". Of course, we just asked the front desk and they informed us of the correct time. The hotel is also connected via a [surprisingly cold] modern glass walkway to a second, modern villa, and a restaurant. We did eat in the restaurant and the food was nice! We had lamb chops with seasonal vegetables and tortellone with parmesan fonduta and porcini mushrooms. The service was extremely nice, but it seems a big exaggerated for the restaurant. It was nice enough, but not THAT nice. As my companion remarked, it looked more like a pizzeria than a formal restaurant. But the food was tasty and the price was reasonable.

There were some negative aspects of the hotel. Specifically, we were disappointed that the hotel's windows were open in the hallways. The hotel was warm, but it seems quite wasteful to allow the hotel's heat to just seep out of the windows- something that seemed to contradict the "commitment to the environment" that was advertised by the hotel in the rooms. Secondly, the spa attached to the hotel was a disappointment. Included in the hotel's price was access to the salt water pool and jacuzzi. When I read indoor pool and jacuzzi, I imagine warm water. Unfortunately, the water was approximately 20 degrees celsius and hardly comfortable to sit in. The jacuzzi was no warmer. When we confronted the concierge, he explained that "this is how it is in Italy". We live in Italy and have been to spas in Italy where the water was warmer. The tisane tea area was connected to the pool and we noticed that there was nowhere to put our used cups of tea, so of course there were plastic cups all over the floor, tables, and mixed with the clean cups- causing some confusion! Also, we found the concierge to be quite rude and cold. Neither him nor his female coworker said hello, good afternoon, thank you, or goodbye to us. They also refused to show us the private area of the spa before we paid 30 euros (per person) extra to use them. This was the main reason why we decided not to book the extra spa services such as access to the turkish bath and steam rooms.

I would stay in this hotel again in the summer so I could use the outdoor pool. But, I wouldn't try the spa again unless they seriously stepped up their game!

We were there for a friend's wedding and can't say enough good things about the venue. The wonderful female colleague at the reception was so nice and delightful. The event was incredible with the best food and a such a romantic environment. The location was somewhat inconvenient, but everything else made up for it. It's not a typical hotel where you step outside of the property and go for a stroll about town, I would recommend that as it's more of a working class commuter town to Perugia. Not dangerous by any means, but not the charm some might expect. You must have a car. The staff was amazing and the food - the best. If you're looking for a place for a wedding or a grand event, this is it! Everything is so well maintained and very efficient.

24h in this place and you will immediately feel totally relaxed and reenergized. Superb work by the hosts: a charming house with a lovely garden, great rooms, excellent service, a small spa and a top restaurant with outstanding food and wine list. Very professional and knowledgeable personnel guided us through the menu and recommend wineries to explore during our short trip. All at reasonable prices. We will be back again and again.

Much satisfied. Though the weather in late May 2013 was mostly rainy, we enjoyed the stay in this nice hotel, very close to Perugia and all other interesting places of Umbria. The hotel in a really magnificent park very well maintained. A pamphlet of the Hotel is dedicated to this park! The room was very good with a luxury double bath. The breakfasts gorgeous. And the adjacent restaurant really high class.

Wonderful spa hotel in beautiful grounds and full of character. There is an outdoor (closed in winter) and indoor pool. Parking is just outside gate but in free off-road area. Staff were extremely professional and welcoming and efficient. Bedroom and bathroom were excellent - spotless, large and comfortable. Excellent breakfast buffet and first class service (would recommend having the freshly cooked eggs - most golden yokes I'd ever seen!). Isolated location so either eat in hotel or drive somewhere. Good as a touring base. Indoor spa is very romantic - low lighting and lounges with waterfall from outdoor pool! Highly recommend staying here.

We stayed at the Donini for two weeks at the latter half of September 2013. The hotel is situated in a small town 20 mins drive from Perugia and close to the dual carriageway E45 - it was an excellent base for exploring the hill towns of Umbria, Lake Trasimeno etc. The hotel, a former country seat of a nobleman, is in a splendid setting in its own wooded grounds which we enjoyed walking in (though beware midges at dusk). The town itself has very few facilities though it does have a self service laundrette.

The lounge and reception area in the main part of the hotel are impressive and comfortable with a small library and seating areas. The staff were very friendly and polite and most of them spoke quite good English.

Our room in the main part of the hotel on the second floor was delightful with a view out onto the garden and the pool. The bathroom was lovely and very well equipped. Unfortunately, on the second night, the air conditioning decided to malfunction and, although it wasn't switched on, made a disturbingly loud noise which woke us up and kept us awake. The next morning we reported this and asked for it to be fixed. On returning in the evening, this request had apparently been forgotten and nothing had happened but the technical guy happened to be around and came and looked at it. Although I don't speak Italian, I worked out he thought it couldn't be fixed. Nothing further happened until I went and asked what was going on. The receptionist then found us another, higher grade room which we were very happy with and were in the process of moving to when she came and said there had been a mistake and would we move again. This was a bit trying but the room was again a very good one on the third floor. I'm reporting this at some length just to note that although we were very pleased with the end result, the staff weren't proactive in sorting this issue out which is one reason for witholding a star.

The breakfast selection was excellent and the staff pleasant and helpful. Full marks.

The pool was very pleasant but too cold for more than a brisk few lengths. It was a shame it wasn't heated even a little as it would have been much better used - I was the only person we saw swim in it though the air temperature was in the mid to high 20s most days. We also used the hotel spa pool a couple of times which was very warm indeed! There wasn't a gym.

Both our rooms were well equipped with mini-bar and TV and nice furniture to relax on. The beds were great. The CRT TV (remember those?) claimed to have satellite but there were only about 10 channels in total and none in English so we had two weeks without TV. Fortunately the wi-fi worked well in the hotel and in our room so we could get the news on our portable devices. Although not far from a busy road, there was no noise and we were only disturbed by the dawn chorus of thousands of sparrows roosting in the trees (very pleasant) and the bell from the level crossing in the town (not bad).

As we were staying for a relatively long time and because the alternatives meant driving we quite often ate dinner in the hotel restaurant Pantagruel. This was quite high end food and pricey but on the whole, very good quality and it had a pleasant ambience and friendly staff. The menu remained the same while we were there and we did run out of things to choose by the end. We would also have liked to have had more choice of types of secondi (pieces of meat without gravy or sauce predominated), non-meat dishes generally and side orders of vegetables. For the money, we did have more enjoyable food elsewhere.

We were surprised that in a hotel of this quality there was no regular bar. It was possible to ask at reception for some drinks to be brought onto the terrace but this seemed to be by special request and there was no menu. Ditto for snacks for lunch or at other times. Some groups that were staying did have a bar organised during their visit but this was only available to them. We made our own arrangements by buying drinks and snacks to have in our room before dinner.

These slightly negative remarks are for completeness and people staying for a shorter time would probably not find any of these issues a problem. Overall, we had a very enjoyable and restful stay in a wonderful part of Italy.

Room Tip: Go for executive rooms or junior suites in the main hotel. Rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors at the ba...
