Arrived for lunch yesterday around 2pm with our friends from abroad.
Most people were eating outside at that time as it was such a beautiful day so it was very quiet inside.
We are fairly regular visitors but wanting our friends to have the best experience asked if we could sit at an empty table by the side of the window but were told no, it has been booked - this was after 2! so were sat in the middle of a virtually empty room.
We didn't leave until after 3 and were just about the last diners inside but still no one came in to take the window table.
We have been in the restaurant/hotel business for many years and so can fully understand the need to make optimum use of tables etc. but this was just being awkward for awkwards sake.
Our food was very good apart from the chips being under cooked as they have been on our last two visits.
Will make us think twice about where we eat next time.

We booked en route after a long journet from the SE to Devon. The manager extended the 8.30 last orders for the kitchen by 10 minutes of so to accommodate us.
This beechside gastro pub is tastefullly decorated in a beachouse style.
There is a good selection of local alles and wine.
The menu is extensive.
I wish I had chosen fish rather than the trio of pork on the specials list but was not dissapointed.
Be warned - don't just turn up and expect to get a table. If you do and its full then you can do worse than fish and chips from the Britania shack a short walk away.

Have visited several times over the past few years. The quality of the fish (much of it sourced from Britannia Fish in Beesands) is always very good. Service can be a bit hit and miss, especially during the tourist season, but to be fair you're not rushed from the table to make way for the next wave of hungry diners. Prices still OK overall for food, but wine prices have gone up and the selection is not as good as it was. Overall, still recommended.

Having visited this restaurant on a number of occasions a year ago we thought we would book a table for an evening during our latest visit to Beesands and planned to eat there at leased twice during the week. We called for a drink and asked if we could book a table for the 4th June at 19:30; we were booking 4 days in advance, as we watched the girl write our request in the book. We noticed we were the first booking for this particular evening, so we asked if we could have a window seat? “Not guaranteed”, came the reply without any hesitation. Sounds a little ominous we thought. We were a little surprised to be called “Guys”, for a moment thought we were in Pizza Express.

On the 4th June, we arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy a drink outside in the sunshine before going to our table. We noted that only one table was in use, this was near the window and they looked to be near to finishing their meal. We hoped the restaurant would be a little busier soon to give some atmosphere. Having finished our drink we walked to the restaurant to take our table, two more couples were now seated making three in total, the first couple being ready to leave.

We were shown to a table away from the window and towards the back of the room. We explained we had asked for a table in the window and pointed out there were many tables free in the window and we were also the first to book for this evening. “Window tables can not be guaranteed and they are all booked,” said the girl.

Well its obvious to me now; “Can not be guaranteed” is code for; “Not a chance, the best tables are held in reserve for our special customers” (Our regulars). We are only holidaymakers and must accept we are second-class. As we made to leave, the girl said she could move the booking around and give us a table with a view in the window as we had requested.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meals at the Start Bay Inn and I’m sure we will do again next year.

This was not our first visit to the cricket Inn. I meant to leave a review the last few times but never got round to it, but we enjoyed our meals so much, I felt this time I must do it. The location is superb, not many places you can wear out a young border collie on the doorstep, then relax and enjoy the most wonderful food. I honestly find it difficult to understand how any one can give this place a bad review. Every time we have been there (even mid Feb) we have found the staff and food great!!! Thank you to everybody there for a lovely day today. Just regret we do not live closer.
