“Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

Went with a group of 50 who were at a conference at Celtic Manor. They coped very well with such a large group especially as we were all eating off the main menu. Food very good, I had wild venison which was cooked just how I wanted it, rare. Others were also impressed with the food and service. Decor was a bit dated but it was OK

This was just an overnight stay, the room we had (21) was very quiet, and apart from the (very) lumpy pillows we had a reasonable nights sleep. However when we came to use the shower the following morning - it simply didn't work, it was easy to see that it was extremely clogged - poor housekeeping on that one I'm afraid. So when we checked out the receptionist, didn't offer us a courtesy room to shower in, or even a partial refund - which as half of the room didn't work, would have been reasonable I think. This is why this review has a rating of "poor'".
On the plus side the breakfast was good, and the waitress who served us was very chatty and helpful, and Caerleon itself is worth a visit for the roman remains alone.

Room Tip: Rooms 17 - 21 seemed to be nice and quiet, as it can get a bit rowdy elsewhere.

Came here a few months ago, after a gap of a few years. The food was that good, and we enjoyed it so much, we booked again for last week.
Again, the food was really good and the atmosphere was buzzing. This place is seriously packed on a Saturday night! Really! We had a nice table, and the waiters showed the usual level of service, without any of the fuss that I find irritating. They do what they need to and leave you undisturbed the rest of the time.
This place hasn’t changed for years – the fish is all fresh and on display, you pick your fish, sides, and salad bowl selection etc. It feels rather brasserie-style old-skool, but it works, so why fix it! Blackboard menu always has specials and 2 course bargains,
My meal was fab! Halibut in wine and garlic. Prawns avocado (old – skool) to start.

My only gripe was the 'much louder than necessary' music – Julio Englessius type stuff. It was a bit annoying. Other than that, buzzing place, obviously doing well. Will be back!

My wife and I stayed here from Friday to Sunday and were in Room 10. Note the number of the room - if you're offered this room, don't smoke and dislike the 'Jeremy Kyle Show' but like fresh air then ask to be moved straight away! The reason? This room has windows out over the entrance to the hotel from the car park - the Hotel has, in its wisdom placed the smoker's area right below the bedroom window, so you get the fumes in the room. As I'm asthmatic I wasn't overjoyed at this. In addition, you can hear every word of the conversations going on below - expletives, arguments, who's leaving who, etc...

If that's not enough, there is also a continual humming from a unit on the ground floor outside which seemed like some ventilation system. Also, Room 10 must be above the toilets for the restaurant because only at night you could clearly hear the hot-air handdryers going and cubicle or toilet doors slamming.

The room itself was tired, the bathroom door hinges were stiff and appeared to be rusty and took a real push to open it fully, there were no tops on the taps to indicate Hot or Cold on the sink and the furniture was 'tired'. We had the worst two nights' sleep of anywhere we've stayed in many years. Maybe other rooms would be better, but we won't be back to test the theory.

The breakfast experience was not what we were expecting either. We were only offered 'Full English' and had to ask the waitress for a scrambled eggs instead of fried eggs on the second day. There was no fresh fruit, a very small selection of yoghurts, no cold meats, pastries, croissants, etc. and you had to go to fetch your cups of coffee from the jugs on the coffee machine.

So in summary, if you are going to stay here avoid Room 10 - unless you're not going to bed before at least 1am and don't mind second hand cigarette smoke when you have the window open. Very disappointing and certainly not 'modern luxury in a period setting' as the leaflet suggests.

Room Tip: Just avoid Room 10 if you wnat to sleep.

We stayed at the Priory for 6 nights. The room we had was alright. It was not the most modern but clean and decent furniture. It was a twin room on the ground floor with a direct entrance from the parc. The food in the restaurant was excellent with a wide range of fish and meats. Very good wines.

The only thing that really got on our nerves was the music in the restaurant. From morning to night and that every day the same spanish music with Julio Iglesias. On the third days of our stay we knew exactly what song was coming next. Nothing against spanish music but why does it have to be every day the same tape/CD or whatever with Julio Iglesias.

This is one of those places where the good restaurant reviews get mixed up with the bad hotel reviews.

My review is of the truly crap hotel. The rooms are small with cheap and very worn furniture. The bathroom is big but the lighting is poor and the shower goes hot and cold.

There was a squashed mosquito on the wall of my room that stayed there for my entire visit. As did the dead flies in the light fitting of the bathroom.

The windows are single pane and let in all the noise from the road and any passing drunks. The bed was small and very creaky, but not too uncomfortable. Pillows were a mere remnant of their former selves - 5cm thick with no comfort whatsoever.

Breakfast was good, although service could be a little slow if busy.

Room Tip: Take a room on the opposite side to the road if you want to sleep.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for one night last weekend. We were allocated a room outside of the main building (I have heard the rooms within the main building are better). The room was truly horrible. I would liken it to a visit to your grandmothers house or a nursing home. Very old style decor- looked like it hasn't been updated for 30 years or more. Old bedding, no duvets. Very very small bed and the most hideous pictures on the wall I've ever seen ( the picture next to the bed was of a young girl in a nightdress crying and looking distressed!). The bathroom was no better, dirty looking worn towels and a shower coming off the bath taps making it impossible to control the temperature. We debating whether or not to stay! Breakfast was very average, no healthy choices and when we asked the waitress whether they served porridge she wasn't even sure what it was!! ( language issues). For £70 in the South Wales area you could have a far better standard of room at the manor house in the Celtic Manor, Morgans in Swansea or even the local Travelodge or Premier Inn. Don't stay here!! On a positive note the food in the restaurant was good.
