“Hard to call on what was the most breath-taking - the beautiful views or the eye-watering food/drink prices.”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

The good:
The location and amenities are unsurpassed - the views are so perfect you feel like you're on a film set.
We were upgraded from a regular room to a beach villa on arrival, which was generous and appreciated, and the villa was gorgeous.
Cleanliness and in-room facilities were superb.
The concierge team generally were all very helpful and friendly – we spoke to them several times a day and they were always able to assist and were prompt and courteous. The team manager (Johan) was especially good.
Room service was quick and well presented.
The buggy team and security team were nippy and cheerful.
Staffing levels were excellent – there was always someone nearby smiling and ready to help whenever we lifted our heads.
Food quality and choice was excellent
Cocktails were delicious and very reasonably priced

The not so good: the prices in-resort for food and drink

We eat out weekly in Knightsbridge and Mayfair and were amazed that the Intercontinental managed to match our usual bills from the Wolsey, the Savoy etc.

Main courses in any of the restaurants were £25 upwards, drinks £10 upwards (or £5 for a bottle of beer); desserts and starters £7-10 apiece. Not shocking in itself maybe, but given labour prices of £5pppd, and food prices elsewhere (in good independent beachside restaurants) of £8-10 per course, the markups were rapacious and shameless.

Wine was even worse - £18 per 175ml glass for Hardy's cabsav (yuk!) against a per-BOTTLE price of £15 for the same stuff in the supermarket down the road. So a mark up of 1,200% for driving the bottle 10k down the road and pouring it out - Impressive!

I expect sporty bar prices at 5*, but these were excessive. It all led to the general impression of being ripped-off at every opportunity, which was sad, as everything else was so perfect.

I raised the food/drink prices with the general manager who explained, "in beverage, our Resort has been positioned 10 to 15% cheaper than any of our top 5 stars competitor on the Island". This translates as, " our competitors are ripping off the tourists even more than us, so we can get away with it'. I see his point, but it's not really a very nice policy.

Room Tip: Beach villas are worth the eye-watering prices. The private pools make you feel like a superstar.

Dear knightsbridgemum

Thank you for posting your valuable review on TripAdvisor. I am pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and recognized our team member who went out of their way to make your stay memorable. I like yourself am disappointed to read your feedback about our food and beverage prices, as it seems there was a misinterpretation on the price. Prices at the resort are indeed higher than local restaurants due to higher running costs, however the exchange between the local currency to £ seems overestimated.
Thank you once again for sharing your feedback and I hope that you we will have the opportunity to better serve you in the future.

Sincerely yours

I have been coming here regularly for years for the Spa and restaurant. Recently became part of the InterContinental chain. The only good thing about the place is the views which are great - except now they sometimes arbitrarily do not allow to eat restaurant food on the terrace which directly overlooked the sea - which was the only reason I visited the place!. Now you have is to sit further back or only have bar snacks - such a shame!

Also, be prepared to wait 30 to 45 mins to get your drink - for the last couple of months this is how long I have had to wait ....unless you go to the bar yourself!

The Spa used to have great views - since the renovation it is now located among the villas with no decent views. The service within the Spa however remains good....

Still worth visiting for having a 'slow' drink overlooking the sea.....

I have not actually stayed in the rooms so cannot comment on this area

We just returned from a 5 night stay in a 2-bedroom villa and it was incredible. From the moment we were greeted at the airport to the moment we reluctantly left we experienced top-notch service, amazing scenery and delicious food and drinks. We never left the resort - we simply moved between our balcony, the pools, the restaurants and the spa all week. Breakfast at Amber provided a great selection of Asian and Western choices, their thai lunch and dinner selection was consistently great, and the Flames pizza was to die for.

We upgraded to "Club International" and it was our best decision. It not included the services of Nicky, the most helpful butler ever, but free breakfast every morning, a spa treatment, free non-alcoholic drinks throughout the resort, high tea every day, and free cocktails at happy hour during sunset at the Air Bar.

Our kids loved the Planet Trekkers Kids' Club, and our son especially enjoyed the day trip to the Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show. My husband and I selected the body scrub and Thai massage at the spa and agreed that it was the best massage we'd ever had. We would return to the resort in a split second, though admittedly will have to start saving again. It was pricey, but seriously worth every penny. We will never forget this trip.

We had an amazing stay.
Relaxation was in order. Relaxations is what we got.
The property is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

The room, the service, the property, the facilities, the pool(s), the beach and the food were all first class. We had not one complaint.

If you are looking for a place to relax, get away from it all - this is the place for you.
Family friendly but big enough for a couple to enjoy the peace and quiet.

I highly recommend this property.
One of the best in Thailand

Room Tip: For the best seafood on the island - take a car to Sabiang Lay Restaurant. Don't hesitate to hi...

Such a beautiful hotel with a very nice and helpful staff! The view is just amazing, even breathtaking. There are wunderful rooms in the main building as well as fantastic pool villas directly situated at the beach. There are also gorgeous villas up at the hillside.
Buggies drive you from anywhere in the resort to any other place in the resort.
The hotel is recently renovated and reopened this June.
Should we come back to Koh Samui: Intercontinental will be our first choice.

However, the hotel is far away from anything, and without a vehicle difficult to
leave (what we liked!). Food and beverage at the hotel are in relation to Thailand enorm expensive, for Europeans not really low.
You can enjoy a wonderful spa, spend a day to visit the marine national park for its islands and for snorkeling (the hotel owns a speedboat), or you can learn Thai cooking.
Transfer Airport-Hotel (vice versa) costs 1000 Baht with the Airport Taxis (you can catch a cab/taxi in the arrival hall at the Koh Samui airort, all very well organized; keep the bill with the tel. no. to organize your return).
A little more cleaning would be appreciated. The personal speak English, though sometimes difficult to understand (or my Thai is very bad).
The management is very nice and helpful, thank you very much for the great time!

My wife and I have stayed twice at this hotel and really love it. We normally shy away from larger hotel chains, but this one really has the service, amenities, and location that push it over the top. The food is great and the rooms nice - but by far the greatest attribute is the location. Tucked away from the busier sides of the island, you feel secluded enough that it is just you and the other guests who are on the island, and the view of the 5 islands is just superb. The only issue I have is that despite them cleaning the beach every day, sometimes there was a little trash (plastic bags) that would wash ashore and would not be cleaned until the next morning...Otherwise it is still worth a stay when visiting Samui.

Room Tip: If two or more rooms are needed, opt for a small villa...
