“Perfect in every way!”

The best cottage we have stayed in. Show room clean. Warm, inviting and beautiful with the woodland and coastal path on your doorstep. We arrived to a beautiful basket of goodies when we arrived and a little bunch of yellow roses (a lovely personal touch) and we really enjoyed everything on offer. The beds were so comfortable, the best nights sleep in a long time. It was the first time in months that our 5 yr old daughter stayed in her own bed she loved her bedroom so much.
The place is beautifully decorated and well thought out. We loved the ingle nook fire place and so did our dogs on the chilly february nights...
The owner has thought about everything you could possibly need on a getaway, look in the cupboards, you won't need for anything at all!
I admire the love and attention that's been put into the property and the owner/housekeeper Tracey was just lovely!
I literally shed a little tear when we left. If i get some time to myself in the future, this is where i'll be heading.

“A perfect retreat”

This cottage is in a clearing in the forest, like something out of a fairytale. It has a woodburner, a good kitchen, two lovely bedrooms, and loos etc upstairs and down. For the summer, there is a lovely patio with dining arrangements and a fabulous view. It is lovely and warm, having very efficient central heating, and there is room for at least three cars to park. Everything is clean and comfortable - and works! The owners - two generations - were extremely helpful. We can't wait to go again.

“Lovely home from home”

Having read the previous review I almost didn't book but I am glad I did as any adverse issues highlighted by the previous reviewer have clearly been long dealt with. We received a warm welcome to this lovely secluded cottage which we found to be a real home from home. All fixtures and fittings were of excellent quality and the cottage had everything you could reasonably need with good attention to detail. As well as the very generous welcome pack the cottage was well stocked with many everyday items such as dishwasher/wash tablets etc. The beds and sofa were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The cottage location provided good access to the nearby coastal path and some lovely local beaches. In short the cottage was a real pleasure to come home to.

“Nice Location - this Cottage is not 5 star”
Reviewed September 15, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

The cottage looks idyllic in the brochure and we had a fantastic holiday here about 10 years ago. So we booked again even though it is a five hour drive from our home in the North of England. This cottage is expensive to rent but we thought it was worth it if our last holiday was anything to go by.
When we arrived we found that not much had changed in 10 years. We expected the property to have been refurbished but alas it hadn't. The brimming log store for the cosy log burner we remembered was nearly empty, the cottage smelt damp and musty and all the radiators were off. Not a good start.
The food hamper and wine was as nice as ever as were the freshly cut flowers in the kitchen, but there was loo paper packed under the table legs to stop it wobbling on the slate floor of the kitchen.
The owners knocked on the door to welcome us which was nice and we were invited to let them know if we needed anything. Paying this amount of money for a rental we expected 5 star standards, I purchased an oven glove and pastry brush because these kitchen basics were missing. The mugs didn't match and the ramekins were those glass jars you get expensive puds in from the supermarket! Not 5 star?
I looked forward to a quiet hour reading my book with a hot drink using the comfy armchair on the landing. The chair was the same one I remembered but it was oddly uncomfortable. Only when I lifted the seat cushion did I find a botched repair, two thick planks screwed to the frame where once there were supportive springs, not good.
You get the impression the cottage is isolated, it isn't. It is on a public footpath with passing joggers and walkers. On one occasion during our stay my wife came into the lounge to find two nosey walkers having a look inside the cottage. Not good.
The cottage was is generally clean and tidy. The downstairs shower room was so damp water ran onto the floor and the whole cottage smells very musty. For the money we paid there are far nicer places to stay in this location.
Unless things change we will not be returning to this cottage even though the area is lovely.

Management Response
Sep 18, 2015
Thank you for your feedback on this property and we were pleased to note that you enjoyed the hamper and other touches such as fresh flowers.
However, we were sorry to note that you felt there had been little change since your last visit as we understand the new owners have replaced the lounge furniture, white goods, television and linens, amongst other things and are continuing with other improvements. We were also concerned that you felt the property smelt damp. The owners were at pains to explain that it does not suffer with a problem and were surprised as they usually get only the most positive of feedback. As the weather is getting cooler, the heating will be left on for guests’ arrival.
With regard to the chair, this has been removed for repair and reupholstery, the table will have pads placed beneath the legs and the owners have purchased a pastry brush. There is an oven glove, in one of the kitchen cupboards, and it will be left in a more prominent position in future. The mugs are bone china and left in addition to the matching crockery set as some guests prefer mugs and the ramekins have been removed.
The owners were also sorry that you were disturbed by walkers passing by and we will ensure that our text reflects that there is a footpath.
Thank you once again for your feedback and please be assured that both Rural Retreats and the owners have either taken or will take action as indicated.
