“All the effort shows - Too much”
Reviewed September 11, 2010

After the intitial disappointment of the industrial access road the actual situation of the hotel of the hotel is a pleasant surprise.

There is a note in the room that the hotel is being slowly refurbished and please bear with them. Fine, but the charges don't reflect this and my single room was well past any former glory requiring an urgent and comprehensive update. It felt grubby.

Dining here was an event in itself. Far too much of an event. There's a lot of effort going into the kitchen here but it all shows and there's no feeling of relaxation. More a feeling that you should be applauding the chef for each dish. The worrying sign of pictures of the food and various accolades around the room were the first warning. The second being that a bar dinner had to be eaten in the breakfast dining room. It's all just too much hassle. The food was good if more than a little over-seasoned but the wine list is far too short, particularly the wines by the glass.

This could be a really nice little hotel with a little work.

my partner and i stayed at this hotel in july as i was doing a 105 mile bike ride, the location is lovely, thats the good points done and dusted with.
as i was doing a long bike ride i asked if i could have pasta with my chicken instead of rice, but was told by restaurant manager that the chef wouuld not swap it, even though pasta was on childrens menu,(not impressed).Secondly i asked if i could get breakfast at 7.45am instead of 8am, but yet again was told by rest manager chef would not come in any earlier to accomodate me, this i find totaly poor service, also the rooms need a lot of attention, showers are really poor(ltd hot water), very noisy on a nite.

We had a very relaxing 2 day stay at Blackaddie. The service is warm and friendly but best of all we enjoyed world class food. Of note they made our infant son very welcome. If you are wanting a culinary treat then this place is definitely for you. Both the a la carte and tasting menus are worth savouring. Highly highly recommended!

Oh, the food was simply marvelous! The service was friendly and helpful! But, the attention to detail for our family wedding made for an effortless, fun filled and grand occasion. Blackaddie was chosen for location but mainly for the Michelin Star Chef Ian MacAndrew, who should have 5 stars... the creative, variety and delectable food far exceeded our expectations! Every meal was a delight. He even produced a fabulous wedding cake. Making arrangements by email from Canada was easy and even a local florist recommended by Ian and Jane created breathtaking bouquets and flowers. The white canopy, red carpet and the lovely Nith River in the background created a wonderful beginning for a long and happy marriage.Thank you all at Blackaddie .

My wife and I have just spent 2 nights at this hotel and we were thoroughly delighted by the quality of the food and the service provided by the staff. Would thoroughly recommend it. We did have a problem with the shower in our room but we were allocated another room in which to shower and were given a discoiunt voucher on leaving the hotel, which was appreciated.

We booked at the Blackaddie for a small family wedding weekend in June 2010 and were not disappointed. We chose the Blackaddie based on numerous food reviews and the chef definitely lived up to expectations.
Thoughtfully prepared menus incorporating locally sourced Scottish ingredients balanced with the experience and imagination of an incredible chef who clearly takes pride in his work...
Not only were the dinner menus (we stayed and ate for 3 nights) exquisite but we were then treated with wonderful breakfasts of high quality ingredients prepared and served to a high standard.
We also need to mention the front of house - the service was professional balanced with a friendly warmth and adaptable delivering high quality service a combination of a traditional formal approach with a friendly, attentive manner meeting the needs of all of our party ( we ranged from aged 4 to 73)...The staff thoughtfully arranged a room for us for our meals and celebration to create the perfect atmosphere for us to be comfortable and balance the needs and experience for the other guests.
As for the wedding it could not have been better. We cannot credit the Blackaddie with the weather (clear blue skies and 26 degrees) - but will give credit to flawless organization and service - adding in simple touches and service - beyond our requests...it was perfect!
As for the accommodation - the majority of our party stayed in the 3 cabins down by the river - it was perfect for creating a lovely family experience - especially awakening to the river view...
We would highly recommend the Blackaddie for a lovely weekend away, a small family gathering, a small family wedding - but also for an intimate weekend for 2...

I'm glad everyone else had a great time here, but we didn't. Overrun with noisy wedding guests, hot and stuffy, the food promised to be it's only salvation. But it wasn't. Hugely over complicated, way over seasoned and served desperately late, we were very underpressed. Didn't even bother with breakfast in the morning, just wanted out of there
