The hotel is breathtaking as you pull up the drive the staff and Kevin gm were fantastic during our stay the view was stunning from the 3 huge windows in our room the room some would say was dated but was clean and had all you would need the decor suited the setting the breakfast was great value for money and again breakfast service from the staff was fantastic the private pool was a little oasis and me and my boyfriend who aren't catholic or walkers and are 30 yrs old will defiantly be returning asap would highly recommend this hotel if you need to relax and switch off from the daily grind!

Thanks to all the team

This hotel was definitely not worth the £80.00 we spent for 1 night. The room we were given was not even in the main building, but an additional run-down building to the side. Our room was tiny and in desperate need of renovation. The bathroom was appalling, I can't begin to describe it. The wallpaper, bed sheets, curtains, light fittings, carpet, I could go on, were all dirty and dated. The whole building had a damp and dirty smell. There was a crack in the bedroom window and our 'view' was of bins and waste. The staff were not friendly. This hotel was not worth £20.00 per night let alone £80.00

Dear Miss Z

Thank you for your interesting review of Willersley Castle Hotel. The building that you stayed in is the Mews Annexe which it clearly stated you may be in throughout your booking. This buillding is the old stable block and has some quirky shaped rooms due to the nature of the 230 year old building, none of them I might add look over the bins.

Some of our rooms are indeed in need of refurbishment and our on going maintenance schedule continues to work its way around the buildings.

Willersley Castle Hotel is a beautiful building but it isnt to everyones taste and we do recognise this, what is most dissapointing is that you failed to mention any of your disappointment to the Duty Manager who may have been able to help.

Your comment on the unfriendly staff surprises me as we have an excellant reputation for customer care. Indeed if you observed the other reviews you would see that generally guests think our staff are more than helpful and very pleasant. If you wish to let me know what the issue was I would welcome your contact either by phone or by email on kevin.willersley@christianguild.co.uk.

You were clearly unhappy with your stay and for this I would like to apologise, however there is little we can do after the event and had you discussed this with the Duty Manager we could have probably rectified your concerns. With regards to the cost of your 1 night break, our tariff is comparable to other local hotels and B&B's in the area and have comparable bedrooms.

On the whole our reviews are good and it is very much individual perception as to whether the hotel is good value or not. Our high percentage of return guests suggest that the majority of guests are pleased with what they get.

Thank you again for your feedback

Kind regards

Kevin George

A second visit. Thanks to the Operations Manager for sorting out our booking at 10:30pm - which I'd failed to book correctly.

As the reviews state, this hotel is simply decorated but the staff and other guests are very friendly. Come ready to have a chat over breakfast and a smile from all.

I just spent 2 nights at this hotel tucked away in Derbyshire. The rooms inside are fairly run down but in a way that's part of the charm. The staff more than make up for anything lacking in the hotel itself, welcoming, friendly and helpful. For the price paid I certainly don't feel that I was over charged, it was excellent value for money, if you want the ritz, pay their prices!

Having found what appeared to be a bargain of £70 for a night in a beautiful castle, we couldn't have been more disappointed. The grounds were lovely and the exterior pretty impressive, however the decor inside was extremely dated, and run down in places. The room was nothing like the pictures on the website. It was small, desperately needed a lick of paint and didn't seem particularly clean. The shower in the bathroom wouldn't run at a constant temperature. The view out of the window looked onto some kind of outbuilding/store room with no greenery in sight. The walls were very thin and we were woken by noise behind the head of the bed, which turned out to be other guests in their bathroom complaining to each other that the toilet wouldn't flush. Not exactly the romantic getaway we were hoping for! The only saving grace was our swim in the lovely pool the following morning. Still, we will certainly not be returning to Willersley Castle.

We booked in for a one night stay, having got a bargain at £45 for the night. Very expressive building with wonderful views. We were expecting to be in the mews and i admit i was disappointed when receiving email stating that. \however on checking in we were given room 15 in the castle itself. A large room at the front, with both a double and a single bed. The decor is perhaps a little dated but clean somehow seems appropriate for the building. The views for the windows are stunning . We decided to book the evening meal at £15 for three courses . There is only one siting at 6.30 which wasnt a problem for us. We were seated in the room with several elderly members of a "country dance weekend" party that were staying there too. Not a problem for us, far better than a stag or hen night! but do agree the castle caters for a more gentle clientele. We also booked for breakfast, at £6.99 which was well worth it. Cereal, fruit, yog and full english breakfast in a help yourself style suited us every nicely. After spending the morn in Matlock bath we spent the afternoon swimming and sunbathing in the large inside pool, which we had completely to ourselves. The weather was glorious and it was a lovely bonus to be able to swim. We decided to book for an extra evening and were given a rate of £40, although we had to move to the mews. The mews room was on a much smaller scale and again somewhat dated. No tv in room, which again suited us as we can watch tv at home. Definitely for people wanting a quiet, relaxing, away from it all stay. All in all, a lovely stay in a fantastic hotel. Stunning views and lovely food. We will be coming back, just hope we can book the same weather! ..Carsington water is worth a visit, perfect for bird watching/water sports or just a lovely walk by the water. Parking at Sheepwash is free and a lovely 20 mins walk rather than £2.50 at Carsington itself.

Room Tip: Rooms in caste itself are larger than mews and room at front of hotel have stunning views.

Beautiful hotel, location and great room.
BUT, the swimming pool was closed for maintenance, there is no bar and no TVs in room so please be aware of this. To us the pool was essential and was a main reason for choosing this hotel. However, nobody saw fit to let us know beforehand.
As the Hotel is run by the Christian Guild (have no problem with this) the vast majority of visitors are groups - many of them elderly(very). Although open to any guests the hotel is not run to the standards you experience at other similar size hotels.
The dining/breakfast room is poor with large tables and with set meal times the buffet breakfast is chaotic. On the last day of our stay many of the breakfast items had run out and the staff were totally unaware and overwhelmed. On other mornings I thought I was in a care home!

Room Tip: Great building, rooms and location but don't expect too much - spend most of the stay out enjoyi...
