Willersley Castle Hotel
Reviewed May 23, 2012

Christian run, converted castle type hotel aprox 20 mins drive from Alton towers - which was the sole reason for our stay. Only a 2 min drive away from Matlock, where there are some nice little bars and places to eat. Hotel was undergoing some renovations, so soem scaffolding to the side. The Hotel is very 'religious' in decor/pics/ornaments etc, and we are not religious. However dont let this put you off in any way. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was very nice, and the price of £50 a night for a double was great for its location. Our room had a fab view out over the nearby river and bed was extremely comfy. There was a restaurant downstairs, however we got food in Matlock, so cant comment on what the food it like. Would highly recommend and would stay there on our next visit to Alton towers.

The approach road to this hotel is stunning and the view once you reach the hotel is breathtaking. However, once inside the hotel the decor and atmosphere is awful. Clearly the hotel is dire need of refurbishment and this screams at you from every corner as you walk around. Sadly when we got into our room things only got worse with lights not working and windows stuck so that a cold breeze wafted around the room. The final straw, given that we'd had a long drive and just wanted to relax, was the lack of a television (this could have been in the small print, but neither of us saw this). We were not at all happy with the hotel and I felt really uncomfortable so we checked out. The staff were very friendly and apologised that we were not happy with the hotel. I'm not sure who owns this hotel, but it's very upsetting to see such a beautiful building being so neglected and I really hope that a total refurbishment is underway otherwise I'm sorry to say that I would not recommend this hotel.

We've been visitng Willersley since 1948 as a family and for me since 1965. Over the last couple of years things have become more 'hotel' like and they even now serve wine and alcohol. The food this year was excellent. One of our group stated 'if you haven't enjoyed yourself, at least you've eaten well'. The rooms are nice. We had a family room (double and a single) above the dining room. The shower was good and everything you would find in all top class hotels are included with one exception, a TV, which for most of us doesn't matter as there is a comfy TV lounge on the ground floor.

The grounds make for a good walk, there's a swimming pool and rose garden, rocky outcrops and just a short walk down to Masson mill.

Whether you are a large group (we took over the whole castle and mews) or just looking for a quiet retreat, you won't find you have chosen wrongly.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a fab view across the river

Stayed here with my fiancé (we got engaged here!)

It was a suprise for me as I had no idea where we were staying! The grounds are absolutely stunning, breathtaking!

We checked in promptly and went up to our room! Ok it was a little dated but I like the dated look (I am a strange one) the room overlooked the river and had beautiful views! The bathroom was very modern and a had a very large shower and basin!

We didn't have dinner here but we had breakfast, it was buffet breakfast and it was gorgeous! Everything you could want and more!

There was a swimming pool too! Didn't use it ourselves but it looked large and spacious!

There is plenty of places to go for a walk nearby, the grounds themselves are beautiful!

Overall a beautiful hotel, would recommend to anyone :)

We stayed here as part of a group on a dancing weekend. The room we had was huge with three windows overlooking the grounds and the river. Other rooms were not as good but everyone was happy with the standard. The food was simple but good. Wine and drinks were available from reception. The pool was a bit of a hike up the hill but was worth the effort. Staff were pleasant and the service good. Possibly a better venue for groups and weddings than for individual travellers but i'm not sure of this. This is a great old house and the Christian Guild are doing a good job to preserve it. There are always issues to do with maintenance in such an old property, unless that is you have very deep pockets, but if you accept this Willersley hall is a very good hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view.

was more like faulty towers they got me booked under the wrong name, and that was just the start. when it was finally sorted out, going to our rooms there where buckets in the passage to catch the rain plaster coming off the roof, and walls.

in our room we had a broken toilet, and six spiders running round the bath clearly the room hadn't been checked. the toilet was sorted out within the hour but I had to remove the spiders.

our daughters room was worst again not been cleaned or checked for what looked like a few months, because we found very black mouldy unopened sandwiches,a empty mouldy coke can, and a mouldy empty pot noodle pot all in cupboards scattered around the room. when I had taken the items to the reception they just took them from me and threw them away.

we got no apology or any offer of any small amount of refund for the inconvenience we suffered.

for what we paid for our stay we could have had a weeks holiday on the coast. not impressed and will never go back

Room Tip: look and book else where in Matlock
