Culdees Bunkhouse
Reviewed March 25, 2012

We had an excellent time at Culdees. Eight of us stayed, celebrating my brother's impending wedding, and it proved the perfect getaway. Coming from Edinburgh, Glasgow and York the bunkhouse was accessible and affordable, perfectly arranged, welcoming and in a beautiful setting. I would recommend it to anyone, and will certainly be back.

Firstly, I can't really fault this place... it just isn't spectacular, either. We were sharing it with 19 others people who are friends so we made our own atmosphere and had a great time. The shared kitchen accommodates about 20 people and really adds to the experience. It is well equiped with all you would need to cook for large groups. Other guests seem to be in other parts of the commune/bunkhouse but we didn't really see them.
It is an odd set up in many respects, but I could not see any real problems with the quality of service from the owners. They were always very polite. There is internet, a fully stocked Spotify account on the shared computer and plenty of DVDs and videos. There is also a very cool music room. It is cool in terms of the temperature as much as the quality!
The main shared lounge is a lovely warm space with plenty of chairs and access to music, internet and TV. It does miss out on a focal point such as a big fire or a spectacular view as it has no windows. It is more the heart of the building. The view from the music room is amazing, though. The rooms were exactly what I would expect from a bunkhouse, perhaps they would make more money to replan the space and provide 'real' beds (some of the family rooms areas a sofa style single beds). Having said that, I didn't have a problem with it. The access to the Loch is good as there are literally hundreds of miles of walks to do in the immediate area. Nearest pub is about 4 miles, but is it a nice walk through the forest. Toilets, showers and cleaning areas were ok, and there are plenty of them. Showers were always hot and clean.

The best way to enjoy this place is in a large group, like we did. I am not sure how I would feel here on my own or in a small group unless you were limiting the amount of time spent in the bunkhouse. It is warm, quite clean and good value. It misses a wow factor, but is functional.

Room Tip: Travel as a group

Spent a weekend here in early September. The owners are very welcoming and justly proud of their house and project at Culdees. The bunk rooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable and the kitchen(s) are cosy and very well equipped. Perfect location overlooking Loch Tay - ideal for Munro-ists. Recommended.

This is the 2nd year our Triathlon club have stayed at Culdees for the Aberfeldy Half Ironman race. We more or less filled the bunkhouse & main house with some overspill into the caravans too. Thoroughly great time. The place is basic but clean and well equipped. The owners are friendly but not intrusive and have a very laid back approach to what was probably a very noisy group booking. Amongst our number were children, teenagers and adults and everyone rated the place very highly. It's not a 5 star hotel but is a 5 star hostel as far as I'm concerned. Thanks Maryse.

Room Tip: The upstairs family rooms are probably the nicest.

Now that Killin SYHA hostel has gone, Culdees is the only hostel type accommodation still open in the Loch Tay area.It offers two grades of room, at £17 per night for a basic bed in the bunkhouse, which includes a drying room, laundry and a well equipped kitchen, or £22 per person for a higher standard room in the main house. However beware if you book one of the family rooms as these contain a double bed and a bunk bed, whose upper level is dangerously high for a child and impossibly close to the ceiling for an adult!
First impressions are not reassuring, a collection of old caravans and some scruffy farm buildings greet you as you arrive, but the collection of buildings which form the hostel are charming, if a little confusing at first, and are clean and comfortable with many artistic touches. There is beautiful view down over Loch Tay from the terrace at the front of the house.
Culdees is not a normal independent hostel, it is rather the brain child of Maryse Anand who has a grand plan to create an ecological community here and there are a number of volunteers and others living in a collection of caravans, shacks and a yurt around this site. Much of it looks like it has been put together by enthusiastic amateurs but with a love for their work.
A problem which afflicts many independent hostels is that they are sometimes taken over by large, noisy groups whose main interest is the consumption of a large amount of alcohol. Fortunately if you have a bed in the main house you are fairly well insulated from anything taking place in the bunkhouse and it causes only minimal disturbance.
Culdees is a convenient base for walks on the Ben Lawers range and the hills along Glen Lyon and provides comfortable if rather quirky accommodation. Note that there is no shop or pub in Fearnan, the nearest pub is 2 miles at Fortingall and the nearest shop is 4 miles at Kenmore.

Room Tip: Loch View room has a wonderful view

The bunkhouse was excellent. Good facilities, very clean and well thought out, with some nice touches not usually found in this sort of accomodation. Very relaxed atmosphere, assuming you are house-trained.
If like me you are collecting Munros it is convenient for the Glen Lyon hills, and even more so if you fancy doing the complete Ben Lawers traverse in one go as a linear walk. You can start or finish over their private land, and probably arrange transport at either end.
