Between Speightstown and Holetown, Gibbes House is a private, immaculately kept property just across the road from quiet Gibbes Beach - a special find! We stayed in the Bailey Cottage which was perfect for two people. The main room opens via large bifold doors onto a spacious covered outdoor living room/patio area with comfy chairs, enlarging the living space that much more. We closed the bifolds at night to use the A/C. We made good use of the small kitchen with everything we needed. As we do much of our own cooking, the staff went out of their way to provide us with a second small fridge which suited us perfectly. All rooms have their own router, so Wi-Fi was excellent. Our cottage was impeccably cleaned daily, and staff even offered to do our laundry!
We had our own private pool, shared with the (unoccupied) cottage next door. The grounds, pools and gardens were immaculate. What a treat to sit outside at night watching the fireflies and listening to the serene sound of the tree frogs!
We felt totally safe here on the property and in the area. Safe in the room, night guard on premises though considered a safe area, several keys to cottage. Each of the staff were a pleasure to meet. They truly wanted our stay at Gibbes and in Barbados to be perfect and memorable so we will return - and we will!
We walked across the road daily to beautiful Gibbes Beach with it's calm waters and shade trees. This beach is unpopulated and quiet, and on weekends locals come out and yachts pull in share the tranquility. The mansions lining this beach are incredible backdrops!
We didn't rent a car, we like to walk, but did hire taxis for some tours of the island.
The owners and their family happened to be in residence during our stay and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them and their gracious hospitality! We were sincere in our message to you and would love to reciprocate the same generosity sometime!
Our first trip to Barbados was truly exceptional! J&B
We arrived on the 20th Feb at Bailey Cottage and was greeted with rum punch an fish cakes which were most welcome.
We stayed 2 weeks and had a lovely relaxing holiday,
Wifi was excellent as there was a wireless key in the room as it had it's own hub,
We found the staff very friendly and helpful from the gardener through to the security guard
Everything was lovely, if I had to be picky the only downside was there was no oven which I know seems strange but we like to cook meat in a oven not a microwave
But have said that we still had a wonderful holiday.
We have just returned from 9 days at Baileys Cottage having spent the same period last year in the adjacent Pavilion. Gibbes is a fantastic set up - three rental properties in the beautifully kept grounds of the main house.
I wrote a review of the Pavilion last year and everything I said then still holds true. We were lucky enough to be upgraded so that we had use of the larger kitchen of the adjacent Osborne Cottage, which was empty for the week that we were there. We might have struggled with the smaller kitchen at Baileys as we cooked in quite a lot. It might also have been less private had Osborne also been occupied. But it wasn't and we had a great holiday!
If we were to be picky, we might suggest that the owners invest in a wifi booster so that wifi can be accessed from the cottages (rather than having to sit on the veranda of the main house). But that really is the only suggestion as otherwise this is a fabulous place, with great staff, brilliant location and incredibly good value for money.
For the price we paid this was a very good deal. There are 2 cottages plus a house on 2 acres of lovely well kept gardens with 2 swimming pools. It is on a busy road but somehow all the vegetation blocks out most of the traffic noise. We had the smaller cottage (Baily) and it was adaquate for the 2 of us. One large bedroom with a sofa and dining table with 2 chairs. There is a small kitchen with a 2 burner stove, microwave, small refrigerator and everything you need for light cooking. We spent most of our time on the veranda which is comfortably furnished. The bathroom and kitchen need updating but then they would probably raise the rent. It's really fine.
The website says there is no TV but that's not so, we had a large screen with cable. There is free wifi but you have to go up to the main house to access it and you can either sit on the veranda or in the garden. There are 2 wonderful ladies who clean the place daily and will call a driver for you if needed. They even do your laundry for no charge! They greeted us upon arrival and helped with the luggage and showed us around. Then they brought us some fish cakes and rum punch which we enjoyed on our veranda. Lovely.
The only drawback is that it is located on a curve on a very busy road with sporadic sidewalks. They offered to help us cross but we declined. Just walk down a bit to get away from the curve then cross to the beach. The busses go right past and the yellow bus will stop when you wave at it. You can walk along the beach to Mullen's Beach Bar which is not far at all. They have very good food and free lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach. It's a short bus ride to Speighstown which they say is the last unspoiled town in the Caribbean. We liked it very much and they do have some very good restaurants.
We stayed here for 10 relaxing days. I took teabags, coffee, sugar, granola and some cheese and crackers. The owner will send you a shopping list to have things waiting for you on arrival if you wish, nice to have milk, eggs, bread and OJ the first morning for breakfast. I also took salt and pepper but there was some there. There's also a Mr. Coffee maker. There is a supermarket in Speightstown and they will call a cab for you when you are ready to go back.
