Stayed with friends (eight of us) over New Year 2005/06. Great place, great welcome, super food. The New Years Eve dinner was superb and the atmsophere was wonderful.
The rooms are comfortable and have individual character. The only downside was, being an inn, the bar wasn't open all day so it was not possible to enjoy a drink/tea/coffee outside "opening hours"

There are several Royal Oak Inns on Exmoor. This is a review of the Royal Oak in Luxborough. I stayed here in January 2007, but the TripAdvisor process only allowed me to post for December 2006.

We stayed here for one night in early January 2007 for a shooting trip. Check in was filling out a form and picking up the key left for us in a small entry area. Most amenable. We were given Room #6 which was very pleasant, but had a bath, with no shower attachment. I reqested another room and we were given Room #1 which we had stayed in a year or so ago. Not a bad sized room, and with the obligatory and welcome teddy bears. The shower and toilet are in what was obviously earlier a cupboard, but just what we wanted. The toilet was one of those macerating ones, so was noisy after flushing, but one gets used to it. As Sue, one of the owners, told me, the shower was not too terrific (very British B&B) and not to move the temperature level, so it worked out fine.

Dinner was in one of the lovely, small, elegant dining areas, and we sat and viewed the menu in the cosy bar. The Inn generally keeps one particular bar table for the locals, but two families enjoying the end of their Chrismas break sat there, and nobody bothered them. Dinner was a lovely beetroot smoked salmon starter that we shared, then rack of lamb which was good, but not great, and brill, which was similar in standard. Service was excellent. Two friends joined us as we ate and were given drinks and extra wine glasses.

We slept reasonably well in the comfortable bed, but were concerned about waking in time as there was no clock. We may have been able to set the phone for a wake up call, but only thought about that later. No toiletries that one tends to expect - only bath/shower gel, also shampoo, but no lotion etc. Good towels, though.

Excellent breakfast, served and cooked by the indefatigable Sue. They had run out of the haddock fish cakes my husband was looking forward to, but we loved the soft and runny poached eggs that each of us had ordered.

Enjoyed our stay and will be there again. If you want more bar activity in the evening, the Royal Oak at Winsford is better, and their rooms are somewhat comparable. However, a reasonable English value at £75 for two for B&B. If you look at the prices as dollars for pounds, dinner is good value. If you don't, it's pricey, but then everything in England is right now.

Stayed two nights here based on good reports in another guide.Very nice little Inn tucked away in a hamlet in Exmoor National Park.Typical country pub with stone flagged floors, stone walls etc. in bars but pleasant restaurant as well.Food above average for a pub served by very friendly efficient staff.Bedrooms again above average with good bathrooms. One of the three joint owners was always on hand to see their very high standards were maintained.Highly recommended
