A number of times along the way to the Amethyst Mine Panorama you may ask yourself if the mine is worth the bumpy dirt road ride. That answer may be connected to how much you love amethyst and want to dig your own. The amethyst is really beautiful and you will take some home. It is not difficult to find. The cost is a little steep. The staff is friendly and helpful. Just don't take a low riding auto on the dirt road.

We stopped here on a whim and the owners made the visit worthwhile. Our guide was very informative and the miner owner even stopped to talk with us. No need to dig - great stones are just waiting to be picked up. The road in quite the ride.

Well, where do I start?! We loved it! We thought it would be like a Disneyland like the other reviews. Well, it was not! We got there right when it opened at 10am. We put bug spray on right away. You need this. Paid the admission fee and heard the talk from the workers. We got a bucket and pick and walked around the field. WOW! Amethyst everywhere you look! You pick up what you want and get to wash them off with a brush and a bucket of water, then bring them in the building to pay. I was a little nervous about the other reviews about paying. Well, I bought about 25-30 rocks of various sizes and just paid $12.00 US. 3 were as big as 2 fists together! The older man (worker) in the store was the owner and we talked to him as though he was family. Very nice people. We will FOR SURE come back here someday! We were planning on going to the other mine in town right after this - but this one was so great, we did not. This was one of the best things I have ever done. My children loved it and want to go back soon!

Our kids were excited to scount out some rocks and insisted we check out this site. We had read the reviews and knew it what we were in for. Yes, the gravel road is a little roughand it's not a cheap attraction as each person needs to pay an entry fee. The price of the rocks can add up if you are not careful. We found it to be worth it. It's an interesting site and the staff is full of great knowledge and stories. It's fun to walk around and see all the rocks. I wouldn't call it mining, but you can pick your own rock out of the field which the kids loved and found many great stones. It's also fun washing them off and discovering what you have before you have to pay for them. I would recommend this attraction to families, it hands on and unlike most anything else you will ever find. Note its a little bit of a drive from Thunder Bay so be sure to allow yourself some time. Also, just some rough outhouses so you my want to plan another bathroom stop.

Great tour guide; the owner! Plus you get to dig for your own
amethyst if you want or buy from the retail shop.
