Great location, great house and really good rooms. The breakfast and evening meals were excellent, you are made to feel very welcome and the whole experience was very good. The location is very good for Lewes, south coast, South Downs.

What a wonderful place to stay. We were made to feel so welcome and comfortable, in such a beautiful house with the most lovely hostess, Sarah. The breakfast was superb, homemade yoghurt and poached fruits and full english - delicious! we also had dinner and this too was faultless. We will definately be back for more of the wonderful hospitality shown to us by Sarah.

We have just spent a night at the Old Whyly and wished we could have stayed longer. What a beautiful setting and a stunning home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay especially the friendly service from owner Sarah, she really made us feel at home sitting in the lovely drawing room enjoying tea & homemade cake. The rooms are stylish & very comfortable with plenty of amenities on hand, We especially enjoyed the role top bath 'sheer luxury', can't wait to come back soon. Breakfast was plentifull losts of choice available, was nice to mix with the other guests.

I've just returned from a weekend at Old Whyly with my husband. In a word, perfect. If delish food, green views, fresh air and relaxed sophistication wrapped up in an airy and light coloured Georgian elegance is what you're after, Old Whyly is just the job. We had a wonderfully large bedroom (big enough to swing several cats) with en-suite overlooking the grounds at the front of the house.

We arrived late on Friday night after a yummy dinner at The Griffin to be greeted by the charming Sarah and Puzzle her gorgeous Cocker Spaniel. Saturday saw a delish fully English breakfast followed by a day of pottering around the Sussex countryside - if required Sarah will give you a perfect day's itinerary. 7pm and it was drinks in front of the fire in the drawing room followed by a wonderful supper in the dining room.

We were the only guests there so felt absolutely spoilt and would and will happily go again.

Thank you Sarah.

Room Tip: All the bedrooms are spacious but the room we had (pinky/ red) was by far the biggest!

Elegance was the watchword at Old Whyly for the house and for the hostess. My wife, Corinna, had whisked me away to its 18th Century style for a birthday treat and it was a treat. How fine to come upon its formal Georgian symmetry, though better in a calash than merely a car. Our hostess, Sarah Burgoyne was immediately engaging and showed us to a finely furnished sitting room, fire in the hearth, for tea and her light-as-a-cloud lemon cake - a herald of her cookery to come.
Sarah, who sat with us, was good company, intelligent and entertaining. Her classic taste has dressed the house with all the finesse of the 1760s. That applied to our grand room, spacious, tall and antique. The en suite bathroom is a small annexe good for the purpose.
We had dinner in the dining room, restored to its period polish by Sarah and the food (lamb) was superb. I particularly enjoyed the starter which, improbably and cleverly, made beetroot seem exotic. Dinner was £30 with a choice of wine starting from £19. We had a nice Rioja for £24.
Breakfast the next day was full and tasty and was everything a bed and breakfast breakfast should be.
Old Whyly was a pleasing birthday choice, so I thank Corinna and thank Sarah who was always good company, always attentive but never intrusive. My only gripe - I didn’t realise the large gin we had before dinner would be £6 and had I known I would have foregone it. Should have asked I guess.
The house is very handy for the all the historical delights of Lewes where we spent a day.
I would certainly like to go to Old Whyly again and I hope we will.

We have just returned from the most relaxing, peaceful and attentive Christmas at Old Whyly.
Sarah, our elegant host, could not have been more helpful & charming & ensured that we felt completely at home in her magnificent house filled with exquisite antiques.
We have read the very few disappointing reviews posted here & there appears to be a common theme. These people obviously feel intimidated because they lack the social skills required when staying in such beautiful surroundings. Why else would they write such fatuous remarks?
Believe us & all the positive reviews, this is an experience which is first class. Superb breakfasts & delicious carefully prepared evening meals.
We are already looking forward to our next stay.

We visit the Old Whyly whenever we need to get out of London. It always amazes us not only for the high quality accomodation and service we receive but also by the diversity of wildlife in the surrounding area. Being a foreigner couple, this place helped us discover the great English country we heard so much about.
P.S The owner Sara is a true Lady.

Offering charming accommodation filled with antique furniture and pictures with the opportunity to dine and experience outstanding food, Old Whyly is the perfect place to escape and enjoy the stunning countryside with its historic attractions of East Sussex in an elegant atmosphere. The long history of Old Whyly dates back to 1100 with the kitchen retaining its medieval characteristics. There are very strong connections to America and the English civil war. Old Whyly is a place for all seasons. In the spring the garden comes to life with rhododendroms, azaleas, daffodils and tulips creating a blaze of colour continuing with its flowering summer and autumn plants and trees. The lily scented terrace with its rose covered pergola is well used on sunny days and warm summer evenings as is the drawing room with the blazing fire in winter. You can also enjoy lovely walks through the adjoining private estate with its wild flowers and rare orchids at any time of the year. Guests can play tennis on the new hard court or laze by the secluded swimming pool with its wisteria covered pool house. This is truly a suave swipe at the old cliche B & B. ... more   less
