“Large well-appointed house with nice pool”
Reviewed September 2, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We stayed here as a family in August 2014 as part of a larger holiday. The hosts Tony & Yolanda were extremely welcoming and looked after us well while we were there. The booking process was efficient and they were flexible on dates when our return flight got mysteriously cancelled. The welcome pack that Yolanda provided was extensive and very useful, as we arrived just at the onset of a massive storm! The house itself is on 4 floors including the basement, so quite a lot of stair climbing, but it meant we had plenty of space particularly with the 2 bathrooms. The kitchen had pretty much everything that we needed, all the appliances worked well, and was one of the better rental kitchens we have stayed in. Outside, the pool was very nice and Tony did a great job of keeping it clean and perfectly chlorinated without being too much. In my opinion, the garden could have done with a bit of major tree and shrub clearance. I felt it was rather overgrown, and whilst this meant it was certainly private, it felt a little claustrophobic when in fact it was a very large space. I also think we could have done with a few more sun loungers, given the house is supposed to be able to house 8 people. Apart from these small niggles, we thought the place was very nice, and our hosts very accomodating. Nearby, within a 5 minute walk was possibly the best boulangerie in France! I thought all croissants tasted the same until I tasted these and the bread was fantastic! The nearby small town of Nay is nice enough but doesn't really offer much tourist appeal. There is a market but it is a "locals" market, so fine if you need a broom handle but not if you want a cheesy bracelet to remember your holiday. Restaurants were lacking in Nay too - 2 came recommended but one had turned into a burger bar and one was shut during the holidays. Slightly further away is Pau which has much more to offer and we went there a few times for dinner. There is a zoo nearby which we loved, Lourdes is short drive away and a trip into the Pyrenees is a must and a 45 minute drive.

Many thanks for your thoughtful review. We’re delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Maison Berchon and the varied attractions of the region.

Our aim is to offer the best possible experience for our guests – so, we take seriously even minor concerns, such as your ‘small niggles’. To date, nobody else has made the same or even similar observations – but we’ll canvass previous holidaymakers to find out their views.

As you say, Nay’s market is very much a local one, which is part of its charm. On Tuesday mornings, in particular, the market offers a fabulous range of fresh produce from the region – but there are also stalls that sell various gifts from traditional woven baskets and bags to handmade craft items, including children’s clothes and hats, scarves and jumpers made from local wool or farm-produced honeys and jams. I agree that souvenirs such as ‘cheesy bracelets’ are not much in evidence – but you can easily find the equivalent in Lourdes.

The recent and unexpected change to a burger cafe of the best-regarded Nayais restaurant has been a disappointment - though it’s fair to say that the burgers on offer are at the gourmet end of the spectrum. However, within less than a 10-minute drive (much closer than Pau) you can eat well at a number of restaurants in Lestelle Betharram, including the excellent Vieux Logis and the O Quatre Saisons, which guests have recommended – while five minutes takes you to the Lac de Baudreix lakeside restaurant, where they serve delicious food at both lunchtime and in the evening.

“Perfect relaxing getaway spot”
Reviewed August 20, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

The pool and outside space is perfect for relaxing in the sunshine. The villa itself is well-equipped for a big group and kept us comfortably entertained on the greyer days. Nay itself is a nice town with bars, restaurants and a few shops.

“Did exactly what it said on the tin (and other reviews!)”
Reviewed July 30, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Had an absolutely amazing 5 days staying at this property with seven of us competing in this years Etape du Tour. As a base the plead was perfect and the house itself was large clean welcoming and airy. The garden and pool a massive bonus. Yolanda and Tony couldn't have been more helpful and went out of there way to make our stay a great one.
When I first heard that our bikes would be stored in a garage I was a little dubious, but on seeing and using I had absolutely nothing to worry about it was as safe and secure as I could wish for...
Great holiday had and perfect base for a group of keen cyclists... Well deserved 5stars from us.

“Very well equipped house, comfortable for large family with kids and very responsive and friendly owners.”
Reviewed May 18, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

Great place to stay with kids and larger family. Very friendly, near boulangerie and all shops, short enough drive to Pau, Lourdes and Tarbes, and nice places to visit around (recommend the zoo in Asson which is like a walk in a beautiful park). We stayed in May which was a bit chillier than we thought, but we enjoyed the beautiful nature and great food of the region). The house has a lovely swimming pool which was too cold to use in May but would be fantastic in June/July/August. Nay (the little town in which the house is located) is not a very lively place, but it has an interesting beret museum, a foie gras museum and a little market Tuesdays and Saturdays. We strongly recommend going to the tourism office in Nay for some great trips of visits around or ask the owners (Yolanda and Tony ) who were just a great source of information and very very friendly and helpful.

“Ideal house for family reunion.”
Reviewed August 12, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

This was a perfect house for our holiday with our two grown-up sons and their partners. The house was spacious, well renovated and lacked for nothing in terms of equipment. The kitchen was a good size for eating in with two fridges and a freezer, oven and dishwasher, and like all the other rooms enjoyed a high ceiling and large airy windows. There was a proper sitting room with comfortable sofas. The games room in the basement provided another place to gather with TV, table football, Wii etc. Two bathrooms and three toilets complemented the comfortable bedrooms. Tony and Yolanda could not have been more helpful and kindly invited us to apéritifs one evening.

“Grandiose and comfortable”
Reviewed August 9, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We stayed at 'Maison Berchon' during an extended holiday in France. We were with 4 other members of the family and the house was more than adequate for our needs. The Northern French architectural style provides high ceilings and the original features of the interior reflect the history of the property. The house is in a perfect location for accessing the mountains, Lourdes and Pau, with plenty of other attractions within half an hour's drive.

The hi-tec pool was excellent and warm but due to the weather on some days we were forced to stay indoors. This was not a problem however as them stock of board games and The Wii provided a welcome distraction.

Yolanda and Tony are friendly and helpful proprietors and it was a pleasure to spend the week in their home.

“A perfect base for exploring Pau and the Pyrenees”
Reviewed July 15, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

We stayed at Maison Berchon in July 2013 and it was the perfect house for our extended family of two adults, one 12 year old and three teenagers - a beautiful and elegant home, with plenty of space for all, plenty to do inside and out, a beautiful swimming pool, a peaceful location, but easily walkable into the centre of the little bastide town of Nay; and very well-positioned for exploring Pau and the Pyrenees. Our dream of buying our own place in the Pyrenees Atlantiques is further fuelled..
