We were four people making a round trip through the Western part of Canada in July 2013. We spent two nights in the B&B A View of the Lake in Kelowna, BC.
Location / Accessibility
A View Of The Lake is situated in the hills of West Kelowna, the urban district on the Western shore of the Okanagan Lake. The B&B can be reached from downtown Kelowna by the William R. Bennett Bridge. Getting there was well documented by the hosts; we found the location quickly, although the current version of Route 66 navigational software doesn’t seem to know this district of Kelowna.
Welcome / First Impression
Steve Marston, a former head chef, gave a warm welcome and showed us our rooms. The house is spacious, with a big gallery, a patio with a terrific, panoramic view to the Okanagan Lake and with high-class equipped rooms. Beside the welcome drink Steve provided various recommendations with regard to restaurants we may go for lunch or dinner, wine yards for possible wine tasting sessions as well as destinations for short trips around Kelowna.
On the roofed patio you may enjoy the panoramic view to the Okanagan Lake and the illuminated city of Kelowna on a warm summer evening like this, tasting one of Steve’s home-made beers.
We moved into the „Valley View „and the „Garden View „rooms. The earlier offers part wise view to the lake, the latter doesn’t.
The rooms are quite spacious, high-class equipped, with full pile carpeted floor. The bathroom offers enough space for our toiletries; the shower is equipped in modern style and very large. Over and above that a big walk-in cupboard allows stowage of all our belongings, even a small safe exists for deposit of valuables.
The King Size bed meets every need; the mattresses however are not as tight as we like it. Despite of that I may have a good sleep later on – was it due to the beer? A bit annoying may be the fact that the Venetian blinds do not close completely which results in the fact that daylight wakes you up.
Each morning Steve, who, in his former, was life a multiple awarded head chef, prepares – no, he celebrates an ingenious and diversified two course breakfast whereas his wife Chrissie provides coffee and serves Steve’s fantastic creations. All ingredients are fresh; either directly bought by Steve himself in selected Kelowna groceries. The herbs came from his garden. The composition of the breakfast contrasts pleasantly with those of a lot of other B&Bs: you may get Blueberry pancakes with homemade sauce for instance, three kinds of melon, egg-filled burritos with a tomato salsa and so on. All this unmistakably shows the style of a professional.
As almost all high-classed B&Bs, the B&B offers free wireless internet access. Access speed was acceptable, no reason to complain about anything.
As in other awarded B&Bs, our hosts Chrissie and Steve made us feel not being paying guests only. Whereas you can realize Steve’s professional way having been and still being a top chef, his wife Chrissie acts – in a comfortable way – a little less professional. This results in the feeling being with friends and not being an inconspicuous guest in a hotel. Both are warm-hearted, helpful and courteous people, in no way intrusive. The privacy of the guests is respected, but Steve in particular is present for a small talk at all times.
The B&B “A View of the Lake” fairly earned, in the combination of excellent rooms, terrific view, pleasant hosts and last but not least an outstanding breakfast, the titles Tripadvisor Award Winner 2012 and 2013. We declare Chrissie’s and Steve’s B&B to be the Tripadvisor Award Winner 2014 in advance;-)
