Beautiful, Comfortable and Relaxing

We stayed at Maison Etchebehere during our recent family trip to Europe and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay! The house is in an idyllic position, the rooms are large and very comfortable and the bathrooms are wonderful. The whole house, which used to be a farmhouse, has been beautifully decorated, and the owners, Richard and Corinne, make you feel right at home from the start. The fact that Wifi was available throughout the house made the stay for our teenage children. The house and village are in a very rural setting, but there are basic amenities like butcher, baker and little shop in the village itself and a larger supermarket in the neighbouring village of Bidache. You can start the day by taking the 30minute walk to the village to collect your baguette and croissant and make sure you haven't already eaten it all by the time you get back to the house! We took lots of day trips in the region and tried too much of the great food! Richard and Corinne are wonderful and relaxed hosts and we are very happy to recommend the house for a stay in the beautiful Pays Basque.

Maison-Etchebehere ticked all the boxes for us and more

Maison-Etchebehere was our resting place for 7 relaxing days in September 2012. My wife and I needed an escape from the Australian Winter, and the ever increasing “to do list” that always hangs over your head when you are at home. We were looking for a rural French experience that could give us an insight into life outside of Paris and the main tourist hubs of France. We also wanted to be close enough to access the coast and the mountains, so that we could go on day trips and experience new places.

Maison-Etchebehere ticked all these boxes for us and more, with the added bonuses of great hosts and great accommodation.

Richard and Corinne were very welcoming and we were very comfortable in their company. We enjoyed classic French lunches together under the eaves as we surveyed the peaceful surroundings. These lunches were exactly what we were looking for – typical French food in a relaxed and peaceful Basque setting. The jambon and fromage for example were far superior in taste and texture to anything you can buy in Australia. And the food was often complemented by fruit and vegetables grown on the property.
We were able to take day trips to beautiful locations including San Sebastian, Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Lutz The lure of the Pyrenees in the distance on a clear day lead us to an incredible experience of driving up the Col de Tourmalet and having lunch in the Pyrenees.
With such a great variety of scenery and experiences, we were never short of options, but equally never in a hurry. We also enjoyed visiting the local villages and just watching the day go by, just to get a feel for the lifestyle of the Basque people.
But it was always great to come back after a day trip to the lovely home at Maison-Etchebehere. From the outside it complies with all the Basque architectural requirements and fits in peacefully in the valley setting. But the renovations to what is a very old building were outstanding and very accommodating. Corinne obviously has a natural flair for interior design and art, and the home is very tastefully designed throughout. The upstairs accommodation is lovely with good separation from the living areas.
The hosts, the setting, the easy access to varied locations, the accommodation and the lifestyle gave us our amazing and relaxing experience of life in rural France. We loved it and can highly recommend Richard and Corinne’s hospitality and accommodation.
