Zum Hirschen Gasthaus Hotel

Upon arrival our key was left in a lock box (by prior arrangement) so we were left to our own devices to get the lay of the land. We found a wonderful terrace near our room with lounge chairs and patio tables where we relaxed before dinner. Location perfect near sites and good restaurants (zum Hirschen closed the night we were there).

This was an unexpected surprise finding this great hotel. The town is very pretty with interesting shops! The hotel rooms are well sized and equipped and the food is exceptional. Service was very good and not slow! I wish we could have stayed longer!

We stopped here witnout advance reservations, got a very nice room with balcony looking out over city tile rooftops. Parking is on the street and a delightful German breakfast is included. This is a truly charming town, well preserved and easy to walk around. The restaurant is one of the best in town, reasonable and charming. I don't agree with another reviewer who complained about slow service. The European style is to take 1 or 2 hours for an evening meal, and Hirschen does not push anyone out. You have to ask for the check. That's the custom. We had a great time, stayed 2 nights. It was one of the highlights of our vacation.

Family-run hotel and restaurant which is understaffed even when only half full. As a result the staff is worn out by mid-day. The service becomes unreliable and occasionally unfriendly as a result. Long wait times for food or anything else you might need are almost guaranteed. For a family with small children this is not acceptable.
Rooms are simple and clean.
I would not stay there again due to the attitude of the owners and the slow service.
The food is ok, but unremarkable. Try the nearby Kreuz-Post for absolutely fabulous food at only slightly higher prices.

Didn't have a reservation for this place, but they had a double available on the spot. The room was surprisingly roomy, charming, and had a balcony with a great town view. Clean, nice staff, but very busy and seemed short staffed most of the time. It seemed to be nonsmoking in the rooms, but they provided ashtrays to smoke on the balcony- sleep would have been better if I didn't have to smell the smoke lingering from the neighboring balcony. Breakfast included, and very good! Restraurant also has very good food, and was busy every night, seemed to be a local favorite. No wireless in this hotel though- had to hunt for some open access in the town square.

This was our second stay at Zum Hirschen, 2007 with my wife and next year with my three adult daughter & grandson. The location is perfect for exploring the Black Forest and Eastern France. The rooms are very nice, some with views of the castle ruins. The breakfast room is very nice, as is the breakfast. Dinners can be taken inside or outside on the pedestrian cobblestone area in front of the hotel. The manager; Deiter, is a very gracious host and interesting to visit with about his travels in USA. The vineyards around Staufen Castle belong to his family, and they produce a very nice white wine.

We recently stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and enjoyed it very much. The owners are friendly and helpful and the hotel is clean and charming. We ate in the restaurant every evening and each time we were not disappointed - service was slow but we weren't in a hurry. If you like a firm pillow take your own - german pillows are full of air and offer no neck/head support.
