“Your own lake !”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

This is probably the only hotel in Hawea and it over looks the Hawea Lake. Most visitors prefer to stay at Wanaka, since it is dotted with numerous restaurants and shops. If you prefer a quieter place then the Lake Hawea Hotel is just about 10 minutes drive from Wanaka. This place offers excellent views of the lake and there is hardly anyone most of the time. The rooms are of a moderate size and comfortable. Wi-Fi does not reach the room, however, you are welcome to use your portable device in the lounge at the Hotel. They have a small souvenir shop, bottle shop and a lovely restaurant. The prime cuts here are among the best I ever tasted. The view from the Restaurant is lovely. Service needs to be sharper though. Step out of your Hotel and you can just laze by the lake or go for a long walk on a clear trail along the lake. Parking is free and just outside your room in the open.
Peaceful and quiet this place is just the right spot to do nothing at all.

Sometimes you plan to stay in places like this and other times you just stumble upon them! We did the latter as we came over the Haast pass on our way to Queenstown.

If you are travelling this route on your tiki tour around New Zealand then I definitely recommend planning a stop at this hotel on the way there. The views are stunning, the food was excellent and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We had a long chat with the owner who gave us some great tips for things to do on our way to Queenstown.

When we come back to this area of New Zealand again we will definitely plan another stop here.

Room Tip: Pick one of the rooms with a view of the lake and mountains.

Marvelous views from our hotel balcony of the lake and mountains .Our room was modern and comfortable . King Bed also comfortable.Staff were very efficient and the evening meal in the restaurant was excellent and reasonably priced..Walking on tracks near the hotel facing the lake are spectacular especially if you are a photo person and like nature as its in a peaceful location. We far preferred this location to wanaka because of its peace and quiet . There are also great scenic drives from this location .I would definately recomend this hotel and we will make a point to stay again next time we visit new zealand

Room Tip: rooms facing lake have great views , check for mid week specials

We stayed recently at Lake Hawea hotel in a 2 bed apartment overnight. The hotel had a stunning view over the lake. The service was excellent and friendly. The restaurant served wonderful food. The only negative would be if they perhaps had a small table and chairs in the apartment as we had nowhere to sit at night. I would recommend this hotel.

While the hotel does have a great location which boasts some amazing scenery, i was a little disappointed with my recent visit. Over the week there were just a few small things which started to add up. The clerk at check in struggled with our booking and being able to tell us how much to pay. There was a strange smell coming from out bathroom from the minute we walked in. The cleaning service seemed a little substandard for a high rated hotel, as rubbish was left sitting in the bins for a few days, and most times when entering the restaurant/ reception help was scarce to find.
However i will give credit where it is due, and the overall appearance of the place was well presented, the beds were very comfy, the food at the in house restaurant was delicious and the views of the lake and mountains throughout the whole property were breathtaking. Definitely managed to unwind and relax in the peaceful little town.

We really appreciate your constructive feedback regarding the need to train even our newest staff members in the art of checking people in and pricing structures. We always strive to keep the surroundings tidy and clean but occasionally this does need addressed.
I am glad that you did enjoy a lot of the aspects of your stay with us - thanks very much for your feedback.

We stayed at the hotel 2 nights ago, after a long drive down from grey town. What a pleasure, friendly, good value for money and included breakfast.
The owner has a wealth of hotel experience in New Zealand and the Far East and is not afraid to jump in and make coffee, breakfast or good conversation.
Would definitely stay here again.

We had a meal in the restaurant at this hotel. It is in a stunning location - lake view with mountain backdrop. Friendly proactive service, Recommendations from knowledgeable, French server were gratefully accepted. We'd return at the blink of an eye - if only it was closer to our UK home
