“Fabulous little place”
Review of Hill Cafe

The four of us popped into this café for a quick snack on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. OK, it is small and slightly cramped, but the service was first class - served by an extremely obliging and pleasant owner. Now, when it came to the choice of cakes - wow! They all looked so good. The Polenta cake I had was delicious and we all had to dig into my son's chocolate/cherry cake, which was to die for.

Oh, and I believe most (or probably all) the cakes were gluten-free.

I can imagine this place will be well frequented by regulars who have stumbled upon this little gem.

I was lucky enough to find this spot on a walk up Richmond Hill one day a few months ago. Since then, I have been very glad I gave it a try - it's one of Richmond's hidden gems.

Everything I've had there (and I've tried most everything) has been delicious. Sandwiches are fresh and full of flavor, desserts are not too sweet and leave you feeling satisfied, but not overwhelmed by sugar, the coffee is strong and smooth . . .

Best of all, the service if friendly and professional. The owner has time for everyone, but knows when to give patrons their time for reading, chatting, or just enjoying the view of life passing outside the large, bright windows.

Truly a wonderful place - you will be happy you found it, too.

It may not be the biggest in Richmond - but this little independent gem of a cafe is certainly one of the very best. It's decidedly continental in the proper sense of the word, and I have become a regular customer mainly because it is so reliable, and so consistently good.

At any time of day (it opens at 7.30am) visitors and locals can revel in what it has to offer. It's perfect for anyone visiting the town centre or Richmond Park or the Riverside, as it's to be found roughly half-way up Richmond Hill itself, on the left as you walk up towards the Park. All the landmarks are within easy reach.

The owners are friendly and enthusiastic about what they do. They are also very welcoming. Service is efficient and discreet, absolutely professional - and not pushy. The coffee is excellent (which these days is saying a lot). It's harder and harder to find a decent latte or cappuccino - let alone an ordinary bog-standard black or white coffee - but you'll find it here in The Hill Cafe. And - wait for it - IT'S ACTUALLY HOT!!! And it's strong enough, and it tastes of coffee. Full marks! Even the tea is good and flavoursome - and there's plenty of it.

For such a small place, the range of food on offer is also lovely: well-filled rolls and sandwiches, with a different home-made soup on offer each day: vital at this time of year, generous, and worth every penny of the very modest price. goulash soup, beetroot soup, vegetable soup, and a delicious spicy prawn soup, which had a kick like a gun and was delicious. These are the ones I've tried - the menu keeps changing.

Everything here is home-made, and when it's time to choose a piece of cake - just enjoy, and go for it. You won't regret it, and you'll soon walk off the extra ounces!

If you are looking for a Victoria sponge, or a scone, forget it. If you are looking for the last word in home baking at its continental best and most tasty, look no further. I am still in heaven after a piece of chocolate and orange cake that has to be one of the best things I've ever stuck a fork into. And you'll find that most of the cakes are gluten free, so there's never that bloated feeling to contend with afterwards ... Yes, I am rhapsodising, but why not ? I like to appreciate something when it's good. And The Hill Cafe is very good.

Long may it flourish: it deserves to. It's the perfect antidote to the unimaginative, overpriced, and ubiquitous chains that we have been brainwashed into accepting without question.
