“Not great!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2013

Stayed here again after vowing not to return, after having a stay with no hot water. We only returned after we were promised a better stay next time and a free night. Will not make the same mistake again and did not get the free night anyway!

The rooms are basic, travel lodge standard which would be fine except you are paying alot more. Our toilet seat was broken and on the floor when we arrived. No-one fixed it the whole week we were there. The room was cramped with little room to even fit our suitcases in and walk round the bed.

Wi-fi is free for 1 hour in the bar - however this rarely worked. Otherwise you have to pay for wi-fi at a ridiculous rate either per hour or day and that wasn't problem free either.
Parking is an extra 5.00 per day....
Breakfast is ok, but again expensive per day...
Service was good one minute, bordering on rude the next...

We stayed the night of Sunday 13th Jan as part of our honeymoon. I used to stay with my family a long time ago, but now the hotel has been refurbished it's all a bit large and souless. Nice silver/grey colour in the reception and lobby, the bar and restaurant could have been in any hotel, no charactrer at all.

Having stayed a night in a London hotel the night before and been treated so lovely as a honeymoon couple we were disappointed with the Richmond Hill Hotel. That said we were upgraded to the next room type up and the room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the car park, where unfortunately we were woken up Monday morning by the noise of the building contractors working in the car park and a chilly room as the two sash windows didn't close completely. The air con blasted out more chilly air on the hot setting. On the other hand the room was spotless and the bathroom spacious and very clean. However, it was a bit 'bland', an Executive Room but nothing special, decor was very traditional, nice but not fancy. We had no room service literature at all, I had to call for it. We had sort of hoped for a glass of fizz or a bottle of wine to be delivered complimentary as it was our honeymoon, but nothing came forward. We had a look round the hotel and found it to be quiet so we went out in the evening. The town being so close and a fabulous walk down the hill. The local restaurant we went to treated us lovely when we said it was our honeymoon. The hotel staff we came across were polite but not very engaging. They just came over as not terribly interested in it's guests, just going through the motions. Infact any we saw looked a bit fed up. Breakfast was fine, the usual continental and English breakfast served buffet style. Lots of staff minned about but all came across as very busy setting up for lunch. We arrived at 9.45am for a breakfast finishing at 10am. As we were making our hot breakfast selection a waiter came up and turned off the lights on it. Thankfully as we were selecting in the dark a chef came out and turned them back on again and informed the staff member that it wasn't 10am yet. Infact so much so, that he brought fresh cooked eggs out. I had to ask for butter, it wasn't on the table, I had to ask for extra tea. All was brought out, but it's a bit tiring to have to keep asking in a quiet restaurant.

No one asked if breakfast was ok, no one asked if our stay was nice when we checked out.

One of the reasons we stayed was for the Cedars spa which looks lovely, but when we arrived it was childrens swimming lesson time in half the pool and the other 2 lanes allocated for fast or slow swimming clockwise style. The spa pool had been drained as it was going to be replaced. It would have been helpful to have a pool timetable in the room or on reception so we could chose our time better avoiding swimming lessons and a notice telling us the spa pool was out of use.

I mistakenly paid for car parking when I booked on line and we arrived by train. It was refunded back when we arrived without any fuss. Then the morning of check out we were presented with the car parking bill again. Again refunded without any fuss bit all a bit unnecessary as we hadn't checked in with a car.

So all in all our stay was a bit disappointing, fine if you're at a function there, but that's about it.

We had a look next door at the Richmond Gate hotel and were welcomed by two smiley staff who were lovely and chatty. The fire was lit in the lounge. It was much more welcoming. Our next stay will be there.

it's a pretty corporate hotel but with great location by richmond park. staff were v v helpful & checked us in at 8am when we'd just got in on an early flight with loopy toddlers, which was a lifesaver. don't normally need to stay in richmond and this was a functional stopover, but much more pleasant than we'd expected. they have a big fitness centre next to the hotel which they share with richmond gate hotel. didn't have time to try it as they restrict children's hours, but this looked like a big bonus too!

Room Tip: stayed in a junior suite which was v good value coming in at £149

We ended up at the Richmond through a recommendation of a friend. They were right. It was lovely. The rooms were very comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful and a great way to start the day. The staff was always friendly and helpful. They let us check in pretty early in the morning which we really appreciated being after arriving so early from the US. The location is also terrific. It has a beautiful view of the Thames and is right next to Richmond Hill Park. The walkability of Richmond is a delight as well as the many restaurant choices. Plus it is only 15-20 minutes on the train to Central London. It was a nice combination. We would stay again.

We stayed at this hotel for one night the week before Christmas, and as the name suggests, it is situated right on the top of Richmond Hill in what must be one of the most glorious spots in the UK. On arrival, there is a large car park to the front of the hotel, which is chargable at £5 per 24 hours. Considering location, this is very reasonable, and was ideal for us wanting to leave the car to travel into central London. We arrived very early, 930 am, but were still welcomed warmly and allowed to check in as there was a room ready. At the time of check in we were warned that there were Christmas parties taking place at the hotel that night, and as we had a restaurant reservation, there may be some noise. This we didn't mind as it adds to the atmosphere. After leaving our bags in the room, we made our way to the underground station which is approx a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel, and found ourselves in central London in no more than 25 minutes, therefore, for anyone wanting to do the same, this hotel is ideally located and was quieter and less expensive than a more central hotel.
Eating at the hotel that night, there was indeed some noise from the parties but as we thought it added to the Christmas spirit. The food was absolutely delicious, clean, fresh flavours, and presented to a very high standard. The only thing we found was having booked a romantic weekend package, there were restrictions on the menu, unless willing to pay extra. This didn't detract from the overall dining experience, and indeed, the breakfast the following morning was of an equally high standard.
We retired to our room approx 1030 pm and even though we were on the top floor, the music from the parties could still be heard very clearly. However, this finished at midnight and just when we thought we could sleep, this is when the real problems began. The noise from the partygoers shouting and swearing went on for a few more hours which we found completely unacceptable.
When we complained at check out the next day, the Reception staff were very sympathetic and waivered the car park fee as a goodwill gesture. They promised to instruct the night porters to patrol the hotel after such occassions in future to prevent this happening again. I can't help but think this should have been happening anyway!
The only other minor criticism is that the room, for a supposed deluxe double, was in fact very small and had a massive crack running the full length of the basin. This wouldn't prevent us from stopping here again as the overall experience was very satisfactory.

Over the years we have stayed many times at the Richmond Hill Hotel and although there are more prestigious hotels, we always choose this one, because of the staff. They truly make you feel like a guest in the complete sense of the word. Without exception, the staff are warm and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are on the pokey side and could benefit from a mini bar so you can have some real milk for the tea and coffee. However, the room service food is very good and we really recommend the triple fried chips, they are to die for ! The location of the hotel makes it perfect for a stomp around Richmond Park or a stroll around the shops. We did have to ask for more towels, although we then found some more in the wardrobe. We always stay around the New Year and although the hotel has a large function we have never suffered from the noise. It is a lovely old quaint hotel , whose staff it's biggest asset.

I stay at the Richmond Hill regularly and always receive a lovely welcome
Reception is efficient and help is always offered with luggage
Restaurant staff are very helpful and when poached eggs are ordered they come promptly and on hot plates
Some rooms over the function rooms can get a little noisy likewise near the air conditioning but the rooms near the reception end of the hotel can be very peaceful
Views from the front of the hotel are magnificent and the hotel is very close for a walk through Richmond Park

Room Tip: Front of the hotel if possible for a quiet room
