“Very Dissappointed”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

We used to frequent this pub on a fairly regular basis when it belonged to,I think, the Chef and Brewer chain. Was usually cosy and the food was quite good although a little uppish in price.
It has now been taken over by Youngs.Oh dear! Their website states that their main menu is served between 12 and 10pm ...not so on this occassion. We arrived at about 5pm (early for dinner I know, but we were heading for the panto in the town which began at 7pm) only to be told 3 dishes from the main menu were available until 6pm. Burger,Fish and Chips or the vegetarian wellington.
We opted for the vegetarian wellington as we dont eat either burgers or fish and chips. It sounded tasty and it was,it was a shame about the rest of the meal though; hard mash, lukewarm red cabbage and a "tomato and butter sauce" ( which tasted exactly like the cream of tomato soup that we had eaten at home for lunch!!!).
We felt it was expensive too as we had one beer, one cider and the two wellingtons and the bill came to almost £37!!!! What? I know this is Richmond, but come on!
We were also quite surprised at the number of staff that were eating at the adjacent tables and being quite noisy, obviously there before or after their shift.(They seemed happy with the burgers!).Where was the manager? If they were my staff I would have requested that they eat (and mess around) in one of the little private areas around the corner!
Needless to say,we wont be returning any time soon. The whole experience almost spoilt our evening,it was lucky that the panto was brilliant!
Sorry to write such a negative review but have had a look at other reviews and cant quite believe we were in the same place.

“warm place in cold, wet weather”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

Always good food, very innovative for an English pub. Great beers on draft and very interesting multi- cultural staff for conversation. We were regulars here when we lived right around the corner.

“A fabulous birthday Sunday lunch!”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

We came here for my husband's birthday and couldn't have had a better time. Luckily we arrived early as my husband had booked the table for the wrong day. Despite this, we were seated quickly and with minimal fuss given our error. The interior is great - warm and cosy, not overly gentrified, which makes a refreshing change. The kids loved their menu and food - proper sausage and mash. My roast chicken was faultless and my husband and father-in-law couldn't stop raving about their Game Stew. Service was attentive and friendly - we felt very looked after. This could be our new favourite pub in London!

“Great food!”

We spent the evening at the lass after a recommendation and we weren't disappointed! The food was excellent and it was lovely to sit by the fire to soak up the atmosphere. Will definitely go again!

“This is no gastro-pub”
Reviewed November 24, 2012 via mobile

Disappointing as a gastro-pub : OK as a decent pub serving OK food.

The first courses arrived quickly enough, but the mains took an age. Of the latter, the partridge came out on top ; the burger was below average and the fish and chips just passable.

Charming service, courtesy of the girl from Galway and decent wine.

The White Cross near the river does it better.
