Home baked produce with great girdle scones (very Scottish) nice coffee and a garden centre you can spend a couple of hours enjoying. Nice people, very friendly!

Visited the restaurant on a sunday lunchtime. We should have booked as there was a long queue and people arriving who had reserved tables. This would seem the best thing to do.We did use the self service cafe which was light and airy and offered a varied range of meals, snacks, cakes and desserts. The auto drinks machine produced very hot beverages. One customer did have a problem as she had a baby and wanted hot water in a jug to warm the baby's bottle.Staff would not supply same. There was an electric bottle warmer but it looked as if it had not been cleaned for some period.Staff would not supply the hot water due to Health and Safety.

We stumbled upon this while driving by Banchory in Scotland. This restaurant is opened throughout the day which was great for us since it was past the normal lunchtime hours. I had chicken corn chowder with freshly baked bread that became the benchmark for me throughout our travels in Scotland. Such reasonable prices! And save time to go through the store for chocolates and other yummy foodstuffs.

Hurts me to write this but there is a recession and money for some are tight. I have always liked this place because it is local. The garden centre itself is lovely and some of the gardeners very helpful and know their stuff.
However, I have only gone to the restaurants not by personal choice. I do visit it often enough and have been ambivalent until today.
Arrived at 10:30 , didnot like the cafe ( partly because we stood there for 10 minutes and no one at the till) then went to the restaurant. the intention was to have a hot chocolate, latte and breakfast. We got in, seated , no problem, only about 5 tables were occupied ( this restaurant fills up quickly especially when bus coaches stop by). Ordered a bacon butty and a full breakfast. Came quickly enough, the cream on the hot chocolate was really poor quality. It was sweet - was it out of a tin? but it wasn't whipped enough, it was really flat and yellow ( always a bad sign). It tasted OK, very sweet but poor aesthetically. Wished I took a photo! My latte was OK , I felt ill later . I often wonder if it was the milk. This happens rarely when I feel ill after a latte. Breakfast came and it was a tad overdone, blackened bits on the bacon, my black pudding was blackened, sausage was cooked fine, the beans looked a bit worse for wear ( was it leftover from last night's? ) ...all in all an unpleasant breakfast for £17. I won't go back not even with the usual Happy Birthday free tea and scone offer. The 2 younger ladies at the restaurant could be taught to be more friendly. I don't expect waitresses to smile but I don't like to feel they don't want to be there, serving us food, at all. There was a sweeter older waitress who smiled and to whom I paid the bill . Well done you. So unfortunately only 3 stars. It won't dent the market, for some reasons people like to come here again and again. For me £17 could have been enjoyed more in nearby Teahouses like Tease, Delicious , Finzean Estate Teahouse or even good old Morrison's cafe!
