We hired bikes from padstow and cycled the Camel trail from Padstow to Bodmin Jail (very easy and flat -short small incline at the end). On arriving at Bodmin Jail there wad planty of dpace in the courtyard to lock up our bikes.we purchased tickets immediately and began our visit. Unfortunately major renovation works were being undertaken on the cell wings to turn it into a hotel (The wings/cell blocks were probably what you want to see on a visit).
Seemed a bit pricy for about an hour an half. There are lots of wiry info boards around. But for young children (without the patience to read all of it) I can see the easily becoming board. They could do with some interactive displays/dressing up gear etc for children (collect a stamp for each area visited or something.
Be aware of the narrow steep stairs between each floor.
Having visited Kilmanohon Goal in Dublin where we had a guided tour (for only 10 euro -bargain) and much more of the prison was open Bodmin Jail seems a bit of a disappointment.

We have visited this place 3 times. We were fortunate enough to see it just after it was taken over by new owners around 10 years ago and have since seen it get refurbished with new and better experience each time we have returned. A great place to visit with family, couples or friends. The staff are friendly and the food it great.

Enjoyed our visit here. Bit pricey for how long you are in there and the more crowds there are the more difficult is is to see the boards as all info is presented in this way. Gift shop incredibly pricey and gifts poorly imagined. Basically sold tops and salt cellars and alcohol which has no connection to the building other than to call it smugglers area. They could have come up with a story to justify the smuggling connection other than it being situated in cornwall.
Very cold inside so take a cardigan even on hot days.
Mannequins really need an upgrade.
The stories told were interesting though and the history and building itself was amazing. We are thinking of returning when hotel is open.
Lots of stairs and uneven surfaces so not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Ghost hunts sound interesting too.

I think the best way I could say how we felt was that I'm sure we'd have enjoyed it more if we'd had a guided tour. Spending £10 each and basically wondering round reading and reading wasn't really what we'd expected.
The displays weren't always clear what they were and we saw some interesting looking displays but with no explination as to what they were.
My partern is saddened they're turniung it into a hotel where as I'm open to the idea of staying there in the hope it'll provide a more rewarding visit with a better experience in terms of the jails history and ledgands.
We did make some shocking discoveries though about local history in terms of who was locked up and for what reasons. Was just a bit like a school trip with a lot of reading!

Saw this advertised in Cornwall best days out and there is also 10% discount coupon inside. I enjoyed looking around and reading about crimes which are petty in our times and the punishments they were given. It’s was disappointing to see a lot of the building closed off and large amounts of scaffolding for build work but overall I enjoyed it.
