We stayed here on the first evening of our 5 day Hadrian's walk. Admittedly we were too ambitious in our first day of walking (after a poor sleep deprived overnight coach journey from London), and after walking for 21 miles we arrived at Sandsike very late, at 10pm. The reception from Richard was very cold initially, (despite having phoned at 5pm to say we wouldn't be there before 9pm which he seemed okay about) but he looked after us well and stayed up chatting while we ate some shepherds pie and salad, with a cup of tea and delicious chocolate cake. However his wife Margaret was rude, cold and hostile towards us - we can only hope she was having a 'bad day' as we've never felt so patronised or unwelcome before. The bunkhouse beds were okay, and the shower room fine. After being told that Richard would cook breakfast anytime for us the next morning, at 915 we were told we only had until 930 to get breakfast. Richard cooked us a nice breakfast but again we didn't feel particularly welcome in their house. Margaret was civil, but hardly warm or welcoming. Then when we were packing the last of our things to get walking again at 10am, Richard knocked on the bunkhouse door and told us to get out as he had to get on the farm - if he'd paused for 10 seconds he would have seen we were ready to leave his place in 5 minutes.
All in all, while this is a lovely area to stay, and conveniently right on the Hadrian's Wall path, we would never stop here again. We would recommend this only to people who are exceptionally punctual, or to those that can't afford to stay elsewhere. Compared to other places of accommodation for the rest of the trip, Sandysike was the least welcoming - it feels like these owners are doing it because they have to, rather than having any interest in delivering hospitality and service, and promoting the area - a real shame as it is a stunning location.

We camped at Sandysike for one night while walking the wall. The facilities (showers, toilets, dish washing etc.) were fine. The owners were helpful and very friendly. We camped on the lawn of the farmhouse, with an elevated view over open fields to the Pennines.

Special points of note:
— the nearest village (Walton) does not have a pub or shops, so take all you need with you; but ...
— the owners are licensed to sell beer and wine :-)
— this is a walker's site — we did not find a bus service from Brampton to Walton, but there may be one that we missed — if you are not walking then a taxi from Brampton is GBP 7–9 each way;
— the shower block contains a heated radiator — excellent for overnight drying of 'essentials'.

All in all a perfect walker's stopover.

7 of us stayed here whilst walking Hadrian's Wall as its right on the trail. We were very impressed by the bunkhouse and its facilities, exactly what you need after 3 days walking, and had a cracking breakfast served in the "big house" the next morning. Friendly hosts, perhaps a little eccentric for some people's liking but we loved them, friendly dogs, and most importantly, plenty of hot water. No complaints from us whatsoever. The location is perfect. We ate in Brampton, may have been at the Nags Head as the Howard Arms wasn't to our liking, and the food was good.

Having read the other reviews of this place, I can only assume that previous ones were either done by the owners or the service has recently and drastically changed. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the distinctly disinterested man of the house, his wife and their pack of vicious dogs (and the dog mess to go with it which was lying around all over the place) so immediately was cynical. We were staying in the bunkhouse which was generally clean and tidy, although upon further inspection it was clear that the sheets had not been washed (!!!!) as there was some kind of pink glossy makeup-like product on the back of the pillow. When I asked for clean sheets, the man told me rudely that 'The sheets were clean, what do you expect from a bunkhouse?If you want pristine silk sheets, go to a hotel.' I was understandably taken aback and went back to my room feeling awkward. The meal was overpriced and quite frankly awful; asda value (I saw the packet) shepheards pie, tinned peas and a dry, burned sponge cake. When I asked for a beer, I was told the charge was £2.50 and was presented with a cheap supermarket bottle of warm beer and a dirty looking glass to pour it in. The kitchen was exremely dirty with flies around the smelly kitchen bin, a dirty fridge, dog hairs everywhere and a mucky floor. The attitude of the owners from the very beginning was that of two snobbish, rude and disinterested posh farmers who despite their shabby living conditions and rude manner, clearly were under the impression that they were lord and lady sandysike. Do not touch with a barge pole- the only redeeming feature is the beautiful setting and scenery around the house, the rest of it is just awful and in no way geared towards hospitality at all.

We are normally B&B or hotel people. The ONLY reason we booked this accommodation was because we were walking with our dog and dog friendly accommodation is so hard to come by along hadrian's wall path! However...

My email conversation with Richard and Margaret beforehand meant I knew what combination of dogs I was arriving to and Richard specifically said the dogs needed to be introduced and we would then have a safe area to keep our dog. On arrival we were shown into the bunk house by Richard and it was clean and tidy with plentiful piping hot water, a large wet room and a kitchen area. Also a little lounge area with an open fire if we felt the need.

We had a set of bedding and towels each provided by Margaret. Who also produced a pre-arranged evening meal for us in the bunk house. If we were keen we could have made something but that would have involved us shopping, carrying and cooking, and in the circumstances a meal from Margaret was a far better option. I think my husband felt the portion was rather small but it was fine for me, and we had snacks with us to fill up on.

we had the entire bunk house to ourselves so in effect we had a private flat with surplus beds, Although we had arrived with some concern as to 'how awful' it would be staying in a bunk house, we both said in the morning we had thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it might have been a different situation for us if we had been sharing with 6 teenage boys!

breakfast was served in the family dining room in the house and was absolutley delicious. Richard and Margaret were friendly and helpful hosts setting us off on our way with rested bones and full tummies!

I should add that Hadrians Wall path runs straight through the farm itself so there are no extra miles to go if you are walking the path!

B&B (we didn't see the bunkhouse) in a beautiful and rather grand house, run by entertainingly mad posh farmers. Wonderful spot right on the Hadrian's Wall path, with views across the Irthing valley. Assault by pack of farm dogs on arrival was alarming but no harm done - still, some warning might've been nice! Dinner very basic but perfectly palatable, and served at a common table in a sort of great hall complete with family portraits, cavalry sabres and so on. Bedroom huge, commodious and full of interesting oddments. On the whole it's all charming rather than oppressive, though it can be a fine line. Play along with the charade, keep off politics and religion and you'll probably have a lovely time.
