“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

We stayed for a 2 night murder mystery weekend. Paid extra for a superb room on the 4th floor, which was indeed a highlight of the stay. Location is wonderful with extensive seaviews from the balcony and a 15 minute walk back to the centre of picturesque Aberdovey. Very clean with plenty of areas to sit and relax, read the papers or enjoy those views. Staff are very engaging and pleasant and customer service was excellent. On the downside, the food could not be described as fine dining - more mass catering style. My choices (mainly fish) were fine, but my husband was not so lucky. You wouldn't leave the table hungry, but you may not leave it impressed either. Some of the furnishing let the room down - e.g. vinyl wall/floorcovering in the bathroom rather than tiles, plastic toilet seat, foam pillows. The murder mystery seemed a popular initiative - something like 80 people or so were booked in but sadly it was overlong and could be cut by up to an hour we felt. We took our seats at the table at 7pm and didn't leave until 10.45pm - by which time we were almost passed caring who had done what to who. We did feed back our thoughts to the staff and other guests had done the same, so perhaps if they have a return visit, this will be considered. We had a very good weekend, but for what we paid, we would expect this. Cheaper rooms are available, but we considered that the lovely room added greatly to our experience.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have superb golf course/sea views. Rooms at the rear have mountain views but are...

This hotel exudes class, the staff are welcoming and happy to assist. The number of returning guests we have met there speaks for itself. The rooms are spotless and the views from the front bedrooms and reception rooms must be amongst the best in the country.

The food is exceptional with lots of choice that appeals to guests of all ages. Across the road is the lovely beach great for walking off the splendid breakfasts. Down the road is the train station where you can catch the coast train that provides easy access to other places and spectacular views from the train.

We were impressed with this family owned hotel - this was our first stay here. Good, efficient service, delicious food, good comfortable room (we had a sea-view with a balcony - well worth it if the weather's good). Enjoyed the pool. Superb beach, practically deserted despite sunshine (though apparently you shouldn't paddle barefoot as there are weaver fish in the sand which can spike you). Went on the Talyllyn railway to the Dolgoch falls - recent rain meant these were in full flow and again not crowded.

Still benefiting from our week at the Trefeddian. Normally at this time of year we would be in Portugal but health problems meant no flying. So the search was on for the "next best place instead of Portugal". Having stayed at the "Treff" before we knew how good it was but it seems to have got even better. We needed rest, relaxation, comfort and excellent food and that is exactly what the Hotel and its staff provided. The hotel has a number of comfortable lounges in which to sit and read, chat with other guests, or simply admire the view across the golf course and the sea. We were also fortunate with the weather and were able to sit outside in the sun, occasionally stirring to use the chip and putt course or the swimming pool. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and in the Autumn the roads are clear and driving is a pleasure. On this trip we booked a sea view room which is worth the extra for the views it gives especially as the sun goes down.
The choice of food is excellent, served by attentive and friendly staff. Dinner is normally of 5 courses but we never managed the full 5 and shared the cheese course. Of note is the wine list which has a range of excellent wines, at reasonable prices. We had put drinks and other sundries on the room during the week and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw our total bill at the end of the week as it was less than I had anticipated. We will certainly use the hotel again and can highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view

We have admired this hotel for many (30 years and last week we finally got to stay there and we were not disappointed. From the moment you walk in the place oozes of quality service. We were fortunate to stay on the 4th floor, room 404 with the 4 poster bed (thats a lot of 4's) with such a fantastic view of the golf course, dunes, beach, sea, horizon - we slept with the curtains open just so we could wake at different times of the dawn and take in the view from the bed.

In the main, it seems that other guests are mainly 'well heeled' older generation who most seemed to be regular guests - maybe the type that pays and expects/demands and this establishment and it's staff are able to deliver.

I have never been a fan of set menus but the choice is varied enough, the portions are enough to keep you satisfied but not bloatedly uncomfortable after the 5 courses - all served with a smile and a fair bit of speed but if a break was required between courses the staff are only too happy to do so. And the food was very high standard.

Even the back massage I had by Rebecca in the spa was as good I have ever had, in fact it was the best I have ever had because I'm still feeling the benefits 1 week later. It hurt but was worth it!

For relaxation away from business this was perfect for my situation with a mobile phone on Vodafone, there was no 3G very little other network reception and the wifi in the bar was too slow to bother with and so it was great to be disconnected from my work.

Apart from a more modern pool and hot tub there is nothing else that this hotel can improve on and these 2 issues are next to be addressed by the management. And then everything will be from the top drawer.

We've been staying at the Trefeddian for many years and with every visit the place just gets better and better. From the moment you check-in to departure your are made to feel so welcome and the service you experience from reception, the bar and restaurant - in fact everywhere - is second to none. The hotel itself is located just outside Aberdovey and commands wonderful views over Cardigan Bay. Rooms are clean and tidy and to an excellent standard. Meals are taken in the spacious restaurant and there is a varied choice - including vegetarian - from the menu for breakfast and the wonderful 5 course dinner. The hotel also boasts two comfortable lounges (one for "adults only") where you can sit in peace and read your newspaper, (ordered at reception upon your arrival), or just simply watch the world go by, or for the more energetic try a dip in the pool or have a round or two of pitch and putt!! Highly recommended and we're looking forward to a return visit sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and book a room with a sea view and balcony.
