Best steak ever! Lovely food although wrong menus were handed out and some items not available. Disappointed we weren't told this before ordering. Same thing happened to other diners, I felt like telling them. Service not terribly attentive. A row had occurred and a member of staff had gone home. Would eat here again.

As other reviewers have said - there is no 'Reception' and the hanging about at the bottom of the stairs is not welcoming. There did appear to be a distinct lack of 'management' and although the staff were pleasant little problems weren't quickly sorted out and therefore became an annoyance. The restaurant food was of reasonable quality but expensive for what it was, several items were unavailable and the service was too slow. Breakfast was extremely slow in arriving and the lava bread and cockles had turned into a hash brown - with no explanation. Have been before and there were no faults, but this time was somewhat disappointing.

Our daughter booked two nights in this hotel as a Christmas present,we needed to change our reservation three times due various work and other problems that cropped up. The manager,Phil, each time changed our reservation to new dates and in fact the deal we had actually expired by the time we did make it but he nevertheless honored the deal my daughter had booked.
The view from our hotel room across Cardigan Bay was magnificent and the very friendly staff created a great relaxing ambiance, clearly a place to work as well as to stay.
From the nearby station, just yards away, the train trip we took to Barmouth which hugs the coast is a must for any visitor to this lovely part of Wales.
My wife and I look forward to booking another stay here and to visiting the Dovey pub just down the road again soon.

We called in for lunch and a drink, the sausage and mash was excellent, red onion sausage - delicious, mash - really creamy.
Bar staff really good, first day on her own in the bar, but very competent and pleasant.

We arrived at 2.20pm and were told our room was ready. We were given the key and drove up to the annexe building above the hotel. The room had not been touched since the last occupants left. My wife returned to the "Reception" to be told by the young man who had handed over the key that as soon as we had gone to the room he had found out that it hadn't been cleaned. Why, then, he didn't rush after us but wait for a return to let us know? He said the room would be ready "in half an hour". In the event the room was ready at 4.10pm - nearly two hours after arriving. When we finally checked out the next day the "management" seemed unaware that this had happened. Plus points - the view is lovely and the room was large and comfortable with an excellent bathroom. The food is good and the bar is atmospheric. Minus points - we were shown to our table for dinner and seated and then nothing happened for 35 minutes - no menu, no drinks offered. My wife ordered the "creme brulee with raspberries". The creme brulee arrived with a compote of what looked like blackberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant. When she asked where the raspberries were, she was told they were in the compote. When she ate it and found no raspberries, she mentioned that to the lady (who appeared to be the manager) and was told that she "would tell the chef". That was the end of the matter! A man arrived and departed in a sporty car from time to time and sat in the bar and the restaurant - he might have been the manager or the proprietor - but there was no sense that anyone was really running the place. I'm all for light touch management, but this appeared to be missing completely. I'd go back because it was a pleasant place in a pleasant position but I might be a little less accepting of the third rate service.

We've never visited Aberdovey before, preferring instead to continue north after crossing the bridge at Macynlleth travelling deeper into the achingly beautiful Snowdonia National Park, an area designated as one of outstanding natural beauty. This time we turned left after crossing, and boy am I glad we did so. I had been drawn to do so having been onto Tripadvisor to look for some accommodation for a couple of nights stay. Clicking on the Penhelig Arms, I noticed that it had attracted quite mixed reviews until the last 18 months or so. Earlier reviews had mentioned its fairly chaotic offering, staffed by people that were giving it a bad name. How things have changed, largely down to the appointment of Phil Thomas as General Manager. I've known Phil from his earlier ownership of some of the best "gastro-pubs" in the Cardiff area and I wasn't disappointed when I spotted him in a photo posted by a recent reviewer. I rang him, and although he wasn't able to offer any arrangements earlier owing to unprecedented take up of a Travelzoo promotion, he gave us the first 2 days of May before the Bank Holiday. On our arrival, we were shown to apartment 18 (20 in all), which is situated on a small plateau behind the main hotel, offering spectacular views out across the stunning estuary, as well as a welcome parking space for our stay. Phil meet us in the bar later, and his easy charm and consummate client service skills were evident again as he informed us of must-dos in the area whilst we were there.
Our stay couldn't have been better, with high-end dining with local meats and fish, and a range of portfolio beers and fine wines. Thoroughly recommended, and we will return later this year now that we have found this special place, and time and time again.

Room Tip: All the rooms have views of the estuary, but ours, no. 18 was on an elevated plateau behind the main...

We stayed for 2 nights in a small double room, plenty of room for 2 and a collie dog, who was made very welcome, this was room5 and there have been other comments about this, the TV remote does not work. Staff were very apologetic, it did not spoil our stay. The breakfasts were wonderful, plenty of choice the dinner menu was limited but what we had was tasty. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. Wonderful views.
