“,very enjoyable stay”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

We stayed for 2 nights in a small double room, plenty of room for 2 and a collie dog, who was made very welcome, this was room5 and there have been other comments about this, the TV remote does not work. Staff were very apologetic, it did not spoil our stay. The breakfasts were wonderful, plenty of choice the dinner menu was limited but what we had was tasty. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. Wonderful views.

We've just had a night at the PA. Absolutely brilliant, had a fab suite with parking and balcony with great views. Our dogs were on their first holiday and they loved it too. Staff couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming, yes it's an informal reception but we liked the lack of formality and stuffiness. Nothing was too much trouble, food and beer great. We' ll definitely return.

Room Tip: Bodhroom 18 but not when we want to go!

We have just returned from a 2 night mid-week break. We stayed in the Pent House which was excellent - extremely spacious, very comfortable and very clean. The bathrooms (2) were modern and spacious too. The view over the estuary was lovely. All the staff we came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant both evenings because the food was so good - we both thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. We spoke to a few locals in the bar who were dining there too - always a good sign. Reading some of the more negative reviews I could understand what some were saying but any negative thing I could say about it would be minor niggles and do not detract from a very enjoyable stay in a lovely inn with delicious food

Room Tip: The Pent House is really lovely!

Welcome was friendly although there is no real reception - you just hang about at the bottom of the stairs. We had booked a superior double room with dinner included (restaurant review separate) and I was a little disappointed with how small the room was. I would hate to see the size of the small doubles!
The accommodation was quaint, with sloping floors and low ceilings. The room was adequately decorated but a little tired - there was a light fitting hanging down, the corners of the bathroom could have used a scrub and the door was really difficult to close properly.
The view over the estuary was pleasant - the room was at the front of the building though the bin lorry gave us a rude awakening in the morning. Breakfast was included and was good - though the salmon/egg serving was tiny what there was of it was lovely.

Stayed here as a group in April.
- fab location on the seafront with views of the mountains
- dinner included with the deal and food was amazing, great quality and beautifully cooked
- room very comfortable and clean with sea views :0)
- breakfast also included and was one of the best I've had. Excellent quality local ingredients

Overall would thoroughly recommend it.

Aberdovey is very small so bring any supplies you need and withdraw money beforehand! ATM only works for a couple of hours on a Thursday!

This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in! The staff are rude, untrained and unorganised! You know quickly you have made a mistake when you arrive and enter the outside door, marked 'Reception'! As you enter the hotel, the word 'Reception' is never mentioned again, because there isn't one! You have wait and talk to someone at the bottom of the stairs. We booked two nights, and knew we had a room change for the second night, as this room was not available for a second night. (Incidentally, the shower didn't work in the first room!) This was poorly handled by the incompetent and rude staff, and meant at one stage having no room, and then having to move our luggage ourselves and going down to collect the key for the new room, even though a member of staff said she would go down and get it for us, she never returned. There are no instructions to use the phone in the room, so I finally worked out how to call reception, but I shouldn't have bothered, they don't answer it anyway! On Saturday night they couldn't find us a seat in the restaurant at 6.50 pm, so we had two simple meals sent to our room......the two bowls of spaghetti ordered turned out to be two bowls of pasta! The one strawberry desert took an hour to arrive, after a reminder at 45 mins! Breakfast consisted of no sugar on the table, brown sugar or sweeteners did't appear an option. No forks on the table, dirty cutlery and chipped plates, set the scene for a '70s' fried breakfast! Truck stop quality, and the large tea pot, had only one tea bag in it!! Dreadful place. Management have clearly no idea of running a hotel, or how to manage staff or install proper working practices. Staff appear to have no restaurant or hotel experience. Two things I've not seen for years is a kettle half full of water (on arrival) and still plugged in, and a fire extinguisher propping a fire door open on the stairs, like I said, Faulty Towers!! If they think this place is worth £120 per night, they are dreaming! It's £30 per night bed and breakfast quality! AVOID!

Room Tip: A tip to get a good room, try Seabreeze or similar, we only booked here as our other favourites were...

Reading the good reviews about the Penhelig Arms totally bemuses us. We must have wandered into a parallel universe! The ambience was good, open fire on a chilly May evening but we found the staff to be off hand & rude, the wait time for our food atrocious (over an hour) and the quality of the food appalling. Fish stew at £16 plus should not in my humble view consist of un skinned nor properly scaled nor boned salmon chunks, a few small muscles (with no bowl provided for shells) & tough calamari all swimming in a tin of tomatoes! The meal, service & overall service was acknowledged to be poor & we weren't charged but what poor business sense! Hence the title of the review? By not getting it right , the hotel lost money AND customers as we'll never return to the Penhelig Arms.
