“Alas!”
Reviewed May 15, 2012

This hotel used to be the best in Aberdovey when it was privately owned and run. It is now owned by Brains. They are a brewery; they run Pubs. They are under the misapprehension that a pub manager can manage a hotel. The Penhelig has apparently had a succession of such managers, each one worse than the last. We had a balcony suite in a separate building, which was fine (providing you can manage 35 outside steps each way for your breakfast) but we had trouble checking-in, getting an evening meal, and checking-out. The staff seem to hide away in a cupboard under the stairs or disappear completely, so you either stand there like a lemon or have to go searching - it took me about 10 minutes to find someone to pay the bill. Why? Why did I bother? I saw the manager briefly on arrival (hiding in the cupboard) & then again from the vantage of the balcony I glimpsed him arrive at about 9a.m. & leave 10 minutes later.
The best thing Brains can do for the benefit of Aberdovey is to find a private buyer quickly.
By the way, Brains also own the Dovey Inn.
Aberdovey is a lovely place but unfortunately there is nowhere to stay, and even if you choose a cottage there is nowhere to eat.

Stayed in a Bodhelig room (more like a suite) which was in an annexe to the pub. The room was beautifully decorated, had a huge bed and sitting area, and the bathroom was very large too. The views from the balcony were lovely. There is also a large terrace area for people staying in the Bodhelig rooms. We really appreciated the pint of milk and bottles of water left in the fridge - a really nice touch.

I can't comment on the rooms actually inside the pub.

The only downsides were slight problems with the shower (water suddenly went scalding hot) and the fact we could not turn off the underfloor heating in the bathroom which made it into a bit of a sauna! We were also disappointed with the breakfast.

Overall we would highly recommend this accommodation and hope to return.

Myself and my partner stayed here for 2 nights over Easter weekend with 2 of our friends. Our room was like a sauna with a broken radiator stuck on full blast as well as the towel rail in the bathroom which had no ventilation, the manager was unable to fix it, as was a couple of other hotel staff that tried to turn both down/off for us. There was no other room to swap into, but after a very uncomfortable night, the following day we were moved when some other residents checked out.

My friends' room by contrast was quite cramped, freezing cold, and had no hot water. Both of our bathrooms had a small amount of hot water, but came and went meaning a shower, sink wash or bath in comfort was out of the question. I am very grateful to the manager and staff though, who took care to comp our rooms for the full stay as well as offering us a bottle of wine on the first night as an apology. The staff told us that this problem had been ongoing, yet the manager was fairly new and claimed not to have heard these complaints before. Apparently due to being owned by a chain, the staff are unable to call out local service people to fix these problems, and have to wait for all the red tape to get the boiler repaired by someone hired from a central office. Whatever the reason, our stay here was not particularly pleasant, though the staff did try. The food in the dining room was good, but expensive but seemed on a par with prices elsewhere in Aberdovy. The food and helpfulness of the staff and manager bring this up from me giving them 2 stars to 3, I definnitely do not think the cost was worth the standard of rooms we had.

We stayed with a group of friends for a joint birthday celebration. Our rooms were very spacious - large enough for all seven of us to gather in one room for a pre-dinner drink. The bathrooms were great, with underfloor heating, walk-in showers and a bath. We thought the staff dealt very well with our fairly large group at dinner. Everyone enjoyed the meal and we felt it was reasonably priced. Lunch in the bar was also good, with staff offering to take group photos for us.
We would highly recommend this hotel for it's beautiful situation and for the room comfort and good food.

Room Tip: The rooms in the building behind the hotel are very roomy and peaceful. There are some fairly steep...

My husband and I, along with five friends, stayed in Bodhelig for one night on 21st April to celebrate our 'important' birthdays this year. Starting with an enjoyable lunch at the bar with very good service, we then had a two hour wander in the sunshine. Aberdovey is like a breath of fresh air and a great place to wind down.
Our rooms were spacious and comfortable and everything worked! The views from the rooms were magnificent with the four balconies offering a quiet place to relax.
Dinner in the restaurant offered plenty of choice and the food was excellent. Service was proficient and friendly and the cost was in line with the quality.
Next morning, the breakfast covered all tastes and was a leisurely, enjoyable experience.
Well done Penhelig - we will return!

The Penhelig Arms is a curious mix. My wife and I stayed recently for three nights. We enjoyed our suite, which featured nice touches such as plush towels, a Bose radio and comfortable furnishings -- plus the great view. For every positive, unfortunately, there was something wrong. The food -- even items as simple as scrambled eggs -- was disappointing. We had a sitting area, which was open to all guests, near our our room; we found bits of broken glass in this area, and staff left empty cans and glasses on the tables in this area for hours -- overnight, in some instances.
