This hotel used to be the best in Aberdovey when it was privately owned and run. It is now owned by Brains. They are a brewery; they run Pubs. They are under the misapprehension that a pub manager can manage a hotel. The Penhelig has apparently had a succession of such managers, each one worse than the last. We had a balcony suite in a separate building, which was fine (providing you can manage 35 outside steps each way for your breakfast) but we had trouble checking-in, getting an evening meal, and checking-out. The staff seem to hide away in a cupboard under the stairs or disappear completely, so you either stand there like a lemon or have to go searching - it took me about 10 minutes to find someone to pay the bill. Why? Why did I bother? I saw the manager briefly on arrival (hiding in the cupboard) & then again from the vantage of the balcony I glimpsed him arrive at about 9a.m. & leave 10 minutes later.
The best thing Brains can do for the benefit of Aberdovey is to find a private buyer quickly.
By the way, Brains also own the Dovey Inn.
Aberdovey is a lovely place but unfortunately there is nowhere to stay, and even if you choose a cottage there is nowhere to eat.
