A bit blissed out after a 2hr walk on the beach on a sharp, wintry day in Feb with brilliant clear blue sky and cold cold sunshine, the Penhelig made the perfect first impression of welcome solace from the bitter cold - open fire, couple of sleepy dogs, welcoming barman (didn't experience issues like some other reviewers) and a fine pint. Bar was very quiet (no piped music, background and distracting TV - all good) and was able to get table with lovely view of the harbour/ estuary.

Ate at the bar (vs restaurant so no idea about difference between the two). Meal was tasty, good flavour and fresh. It wasn't brilliant but equally it was better than average (I don't understand why TripAdvisor only offers Average and Very Good and not Good as well). Price reasonable.

As other reviewer has said, Penhelig could be brilliant - raise the game on the food to match the setting and it'd be even more of a winner.

Says it all really.
Can’t fault the location and view from The Pen but the whole experience could have been so much better.
Had a mediocre meal in the Restaurant which was spoilt by the lamb rump being overcooked and placed onto a cold plate.
No music in the background - had no choice other than to listen to inane chatter and laughter coming from the kitchen which really spoilt the ambience.
The Pen will never be as good as when it was owned independently when the food was excellent, so was the wine list, choice of beers and quality of service.
Bring back the Good Old Days !

Ordering a round of drinks, bar man tutsand tuts at each requests, declares he's had enough then storms off home #firstclasscustomerservice

acrimonious Attitude to say the least.

Some nice dogs here though.

Crap atmosphere for NYE, the brewery need to turn this place round

Had lunch here on Saturday. Great first impressions but things rather deteriorated. The woman behind the bar was less than friendly, and the food served was not as described. A real shame as the surroundings were pleasing as was the lovely open fire.

Positives-
Lovely open fire in the Fisherman's Bar.
Wonderful location on the mouth of the Dovey.

Negatives-
Service not good - plates took over half an hour to be cleared.
Other diners food (party of six) arrived at different times.
The bar meals we ordered were not great, greasy fish pie, semi-raw chips (sent back and refunded) server said he would check with the manager to see if he could refund!!!

What a shame!
PS. I cannot understand how this pub has retained it's main entry in the Good Pub Guide????
