“Early Closing”

Woodlands Manor Golf Club
Reviewed August 21, 2014

I have played there several times on a Sunday afternoon and recently the bar is always closed. On the last occasion I finished at Five PM returned to the club house and saw a member of the bar staff outside, I asked if the bar was open and was told that they had shut it after it rained earlier and everyone left. When it rained we were on the third tee some three hours earlier and only for about ten minutes since then the weather was sunny so they closed the bar about two o'clock. This is not the first time I have ended my game and found not only the bar closed but the building locked. they seem to open for the convenience of staff not for the comfort of the players.

I visited this course in May, played as a 2 ball midweek. When we arrived at the pro shop we were told that as the 1st tee was free we could tee off straight away.
Found the course in excellent condition and challenging enough for the low handicapper but still not too daunting for the mid to high handicapper.
Some lovely holes and a lot of variety.

Negotiating the track (Tinkerpot Lane) down to the golf club is an adventure in itself, but do not despair you will get there eventually. i visited Woodlands Manor as part of a larger group and was greeted in a most hospitable manner. The food and refreshments provided were well prepared and presented so no complaints here. However the main reason for being there was to play golf and the story here is not so positive.
The golf course has a reasonable and challenging lay out on either side of a valley. The condition of the course on the day of our visit were generally poor. The teeing areas were uncared for heavily dotted with divots and like most of the course looked as though the grass hadn't been cut for a few days. Fairway grass was unduly long, greens were slow and bumpy due to being uncut and in places (including the banks of teeing areas) the rough was ridiculous. Bunkers were in need of preparation and the rough around their edges was badly in need of strimming.
The 10th and 18th holes are in opposite directions on the side of a steep hill and are essentially "novelty" holes which a first time visitor will find difficult to club him/herself on and hitting either green is something of a lottery for all but the most proficient golfer. The HSE may have a view on the journey down from the 18th tee to the green.
During the day there was no sign of green keeping staff working anywhere on the course and the general impression was that they hadn't worked the course for some days.
Overall the course was in need of some TLC and money spent on maintenance to make it a attractive and an enjoyable golfing experience.

The course will take your breath away! literally! Going up the Eiger hole will make your blood pump but the view at the top is well worth it. This is a must play course and they offer great food and great service.
