Description: Traditional pub, set on Bessels Green, Sevenoaks. Well known and local ales on hand pull as well as a fully stocked back bar and extensive wine list. A wonderful team of chefs prepare a menu that changes daily with a focus on using seasonal and local produce. Warm and cosy in the winter with three open fires and various nooks and crannies to hide away in. In the summer we have an extensive patio and beer garden, positioned perfectly to catch the last of the evening sun.

The interior decor of this pub is beautiful and there are wonderful seating areas outside. It is just a shame the food doesn't match. Maybe the chef will improve as it is still early days but I don't think we will be going back for a while.

Since this pub had changed hands my fiancee and me decided to pay it a visit. The pub has great decor and seems pretty cosy. After having a drink we decided this would be a good place for our usual family Sunday meal.

7 of us visited on a Sunday and sat down to eat.
Two ordered the roast, one fish and chips and one a burger, I cannot remember the rest.

I had the roast and was really looking forward to it. It came out looking as it should but that is about as good as it got. The meat was very tough and very fatty - I have had better meat in the Toby Carvery for half the price. The potatoes were cold and all round the roast was pretty bland. The only person at our table that enjoyed there meal was the person who had the burger. We were left disappointed with the food experience. The service was OK but the experience was spoiled by the food.

The day after the meal myself and the other person that had the roast suffered from bad stomachs, - it may not have been the food there but we did wonder.

We left and have vowed never to return again. Such a shame as the pub has been done out really well.

We'd booked a table for two for an early supper. At the last minute we were joined by a colleague and upon arrival we asked if they could fit us in. The GM turned his back on us and started moaning, saying that there was no way they could fit an extra person in - not even the slightest hint at any real hosting skills. Fortunately for us the waitress had more diplomacy skills in her little finger and tried to see if she could fit 1 extra person in - all the time being under fire from the GM moaning about her attempts to accommodate us. She bravely came back and said that if we were finished within 2 hours she could squeeze us in. We were finished in plenty of time and when we left there were no less than 28 covers still free! The GM needs to take some tips on hosting, on providing a welcoming atmosphere and how, if necessary, diplomatically dealing with patrons from his waitress.

We organised a walk to take in this newly refurbished pub. It was very welcoming and very nicely decorated. So far so good. BUT the food was poor. I had beer battered cod. It was undercooked and almost inedible. I left most of it. Two burgers were ok, although had to be sent back to be cooked as required, but the chips were cold and the salad not good. The fourth meal was sausages which were ok.
I needed something to take away the taste of the fish, so we ordered 2 sharing sundaes. It was meant to be chocolate brownies and ice creams. They were enormous and horrid. The 'brownies' were rather nasty chocolate sponge and really ruined the whole thing. We stopped at the Ide Hill shop on the way home to have tea and buns to get rid of the taste of the lunch. Won't be going again unless we hear that the cooking has improved.

Whiting and Hammond took over the pub recently. I love what they have done to the Hare at Langton Green, and they have done a brilliant job of converting the decor here, of what was a rather tired locals pub into a interior that looks almost as if it has been maturing for centuries.

However, I am not convinced that this pub will make it until Whiting and Hammond have replaced the chef and trained the waiting staff a little better. It took fifteen minutes for us to be seated with a drink, despite having a reservation and there being plenty of empty seats. Another 45 minutes later, we were served the food. Fish nice and hot, but smothered in oil; quiche cooked until the pastry was brown and the egg was boiled solid; potatoes seemed to have been reheated and the spinach was greasy.

Nice, though limited, choice of wines. Our Fleurie was excellent, but was dumped on the table already opened and no attempt to serve any of it, let alone the "would sir like to taste" ritual.

Sevenoaks has some very good restaurants such as The Vine or The House on the Hill. There are also some pretty good local pubs such as the White Rock, the Chaser and the White Hart. Whiting and Hammond need to pull their finger out and start sacking people if they want to compete.
