“Mutton dressed as lamb - basic and amateur”
Reviewed July 31, 2010

This hotel should be a gem... but it isn't!
We were greeted by a very stressed receptionist who kept us waiting and then said she was "the only one on" (like that's our problem). Her manner was hardly friendly and helpful as she thrust some menus at us and said we needed to choose our dinner for the evening for our company and put our room nos on it - which two of us hadn't got yet. I asked for her recommendation and she then listed the menu and told me it was all nice (see later). She made little or no accommodation for the fact my colleagues were not native speakers (welcome to Britain!).
The rooms were poorly signposted. My room had windows open with hinges off one of them, a bath but nothing but a hand-shower and very basic amenities - below par with other hotels. My colleague had no hot water, had run the tap for 30 mins and was told to "carry on it'll come through eventually". I enquired about Wifi but couldn't get it to work (that might be my cos fault to be fair).
Dinner - they missed half the orders so we had to re-order in the bar (so much for the system). A cheese tart was presented as chicken liver parfait by a waiter who did not speak English. I ordered medium rare steak which was....... at one end! The other 2/3s was well done. I didn't send it back as I was starving by now. The cheese board was the worst I've ever had - boring, boring, boring (poor cheddar - try Davidstow guys!!!), bland brie - not what you expect in a hotel restaurant now we've left the 70s behind!
Breakfast - buffet style with cooked breakfast in lidded silver platters (?) with nowhere to put the lids to serve your food.
No enquiry about the stay or feedback cards - they need them. And to cap it all I left my phone charger - when I rang they said they hadn't got it but I could ring back when the other receptionist was on!!! Struth!
All in all one of the poorest business stays I've ever had! (Travelodge do it better)

We have just enjoyed three nights at this wonderful old hotel, which has obviously been recently revamped. The room we stayed in overlooked the lake and although not in the old part of the building was perfectly adequate being clean and well equppied with a new bathroom - everything you need to feel comfortable was offered. In the restaurant meals were excellent and with friendly helpful satff everywhere, we really felt we had found a jewel in the crown to which we will return for futher future forays into the local shropshire countryside.
The excellent rate we got for a full board stay was the icing on the cake.

We stayed in this hotel for a two night break to celebrate our Anniversary. The hotel kindly upgraded us to a lakeside view with four poster bed, which was lovely. The room was clean, authentic with the old furniture, but modern with flat screen TV. We had an all inclusive package deal which was excellent value for money and included breakfast, dinner, evening meal and wine and beer from 7-11pm. The food was excellent, and service amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and they went over and above to make sure your stay was perfect. The building was amazing and we would definately recommend this hotel to others. Thanks a lot to all the staff.

We booked this hotel on an all inclusive break for a very competitive price, and our expectations were exceeded throughout our stay.
The staff were extremely helpful and always smiling and ready to help. Our room was very comfortable and a good size with everything that we needed.
On our final night there was a large group of people who were there for a wedding the next day,and we were worried that they would take over the restaurant with noise etc.,But the staff had pre-empted our concerns and arranged for all the non wedding guests to have their supper in each of the beautiful lounges, and we were lucky enough to have our meal in a private dining room. Now,that is good service !!
We will definately be going back as we enjoyed our break so much.

My wife and I stayed at Madeley Court for one night when visiting relatives in the area. The approach to the hotel was via a dangerously pot-holed driveway that led to a large car park surrounded by poorly maintained gardens, a pity as they could be very fine.
The hotels looks stunning from the outside, an old building full of character with several modern extentions. Inside is a slightly different story as the public rooms need serious money spending on them, the soft furnishings in paticular being tired and worn. Our room had clearly been recently refurbished and it was fine, though in the corporate room style which does not really suit the hotel. It was, however, very clean.
Dinner was ok and served by very friendly staff, but the dining room had very worn and dirty chairs which spoiled the experience somewhat. The menu contained many supplements which defeated the object of a set price dinner ( put the price up slightly and ditch all the supplements would be my advice ). Reasonable wine list. Instant coffee served in cafetieres to try and fool the guests is not a good idea! Breakfast was fine, but again corners were cut on costs with poor quality packet preserves etc.
Overall this is an average hotel pretending to be an upmarket country house - which it could be if the owners had £5 million pounds to spare. Our night with dinner cost £225 and we both felt that we had received better value elsewhere.

We recently stayed at the Madeley Court Hotel as part of a coach tour. The hotel itself was fantastic, when we arrived we had tea/coffee/sandwiches and scones, yum! Our bedroom/bathroom was excellent. The meals were excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful and were very friendly. (Lesley was very helpful). Would thoroughly recommend Madeley as a perfect place to stay.
