We have been going to do this for years and we finally found the time.
We travelled from Whitby on their steam train for our connection in Grosmont we spent a while in Grosmont in the tea rooms and looking round the little shops before getting on the Pullman at 12-15pm
The tables were set beautifully and the staff are very pleasant and hard working even the very young ones, thank you.
We ordered a bottle of wine and waited for our starter to arrive which were a prawn cocktail and a cheese and ham quiche, one of the best I've ever had, home made of course.
After that course we both had the roast beef and Yorkshire puddings with plenty of vegetables for two , horseradish and an extra jug of gravy, lovely.
In the meantime we are gradually steaming up to Pickering having stopped at the other small stations like Goathland and Levisham.
For dessert I chose the cheese and biscuits which were enough for two people, we thoroughly enjoyed it.
We stopped at Pickering with time to visit the toilet and stretch your legs a little then made our way back to Grosmont, we had plenty enough time for our connection to Whitby.
It all went to plan and we had a lovely day, thank you all at NYMR.

Had a great trip from Pickering to Whitby.
Whitby was a lovely place to visit and a good clime up to the old abbey.
We did have a delay on the return journey as the steam engine lost grip going up a gradient , so we had to get another train to push us up to the top.
I’t did make us late but I thought this made it more of an Experience of steam travel .
Lovely train and well worth the trip .

We were staying in a cottage near Pickering so decided to have a day out on the steam train. All the staff were very friendly on our journey especially the young lady serving on the buffet car when we went for our brews on the way out and back. Had a good walk around Whitby and came back on the train about 5pm. Good day out.

First impressions were very good: easy parking, courteous and efficient booking clerk, atmospheric heritage station at Pickering and smart uniformed staff. It's a lovely line and we went for a return to Whitby, leaving on the first train.

By the time we were at Whitby we were 15 minutes late. No explanation. Beware, there are, unbelievably, no toilet facilities at Whitby and Whitby charges its visitors 40 pennies every time they want to spend just one!

It seemed reasonable to arrive at 13.45 to catch the 14.00 home. After a tiring queue with minimal places to sit (and no loos) it came in at 14.00 and left at 14.15. As there was (unbelievably) no tannoy system on Whitby station nor on the train, there was no mechanism for communicating what was going on, let alone apologising to the travelling public. A change of train back to steam at Grosmont was welcome. But then, not long after leaving, the train apparently ran out of steam on one of the inclines. It came to a halt and then did a series of slips back several hundred yards, each followed by screeching brakes and a less than smooth stop. Those of us in the know may have found this no cause for concern, others may well have been alarmed.

It was some while before we were informed that there was 'engine trouble' (missed opportunity to explain more of the mysteries and difficulties of steam locomotation). But as there was no tannoy, it was the TTI and then a NYMR guide who eventually told each carriage individually. Still no sorry, no regrets for our inconvenience. Eventually a third, rather stressed employee came through with a quick perfunctory apology. We arrived at Pickering at about 16.55, about an hour and a quarter late.

I fully appreciate that things go wrong on steam railways. When that happens, it would be good policy to communicate fully to the travelling public, explaining things and apologising.

Thought I was going to write a different review to this.

Thank you for your review. Firstly can I say that Whitby Station is a main line station so the NYMR is not responsible for the lack of toilets or announcements there. We are sorry that you were not kept informed on the journey - it sounds as if there was a problem with the locomotive - and I have passed on your comments about this.
