Owner description: The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and education at its heart. Climb on-board a steam or heritage diesel train on one of the earliest and most historic lines. Experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. We will take you on a journey you can’t even imagine! Explore the Railway • Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the locomotive steam era. • A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. • Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines! • Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. • Explore Levisham Station which is surrounded by the North York Moors.

This historic railway has so much going for it, steam engines, diesel engines and historic coaches, and scenery that is some of the best in Yorkshire which is pleasing on the eye as you travel in comfort. Although the cost is not cheap it is still excellent value for what you get. The staff go out of their way to make your trip with them a very pleasant. Drinks and snacks are available on the train as well as good food at most of the stations from full breakfast to small snacks. Wheelchairs are catered for on the trains as well on the stations.

Lovely trip, not cheap by any means, but is worth it overall.

Multitude of timetables and different steam/diesel combinations can be confusing but ask the staff and they can fill you in. Steam trains normally do run but you need to check as tinderbox dry moorlands can be a fire risk and sometimes this stops steam from operating. I mean if it's not steam, there's not much point, is there?

The main scenery and moorland is from Pickering to Grosmont. Grosmont to Whitby is less interesting on this front. Not much to do in Grosmont. A few decent shops and tea rooms in Goathland and some nice walks and countryside too not to mention the Heartbeat wall to wall theme.

Yes, this railway is well worth a go.

Wonderful scenic views of part of the N.Yorks. moors on the journey to Whitby. A great journey by steam train brought back early childhood memories.

We go on the NYMR from Pickering to Whitby every time we come to Yorkshire and are never disappointed. The experience is great and the scenery beautiful. Remember to book online to get 15% off (or it is at the moment!). All the staff on the trains and in the stations are really friendly and the children love waving to the train drivers. You really don't have to be a train enthusiast to have a fantastic day out!
