“Poor customer after service”
Reviewed May 18, 2012 via mobile

We arrived on 23rd april and found the location very easily and the cabin was in a pleasant location right on edge of forest. Only negative to the actual cabin was the windows were dirty and couldnt see clearly out of them. Unfortunately we had booked a four night stay and had to leave after one as our youngest dog had been diagnosed with hip dysplacia the week before and.whilst there the specilist rang for appointment. This is were my opinion of forest holidays went downhill. Following wk i called cropton and asked for letter to say i had left early the manager was very uncooperative said she would call me bk next day. Next day came no call ao i called bk to be told that today and tomorrow were her days of. Decised they was going to be no use so called head office who agreed to investigate. On 4th june had voicemail saying letter wud be sorted so i could forward onto my pet insurance come 14th no letter still. Call back to be told lady i dealt with was on holiday and no record had been.made on my account I now have the letter almost 3 weeks later thanks to the lady that finally did as she promised I was grateful. However this has put me of returning as I was just asking for such a simple thing that turned so difficult.

We booked our anniversary weekend away (11th – 14th May 2012) only 3 days before arriving, we paid £195 for the weekend, which I understand is £100 cheaper than usual (due to the last minute booking). We didn’t choose a cabin (£25 charge otherwise) and were given number 13.

---------- Getting to Cropton Cabins ----------

Finding the camp site was very easy, we did use SatNav (TomTom) which took us right to the entrance, although it is clearly sign posted shortly after leaving Pickering.

---------- Upon Arrival ----------

We were greeted by a young chap at reception (unfortunately I didn’t take note of his name), who was very polite and advised us of their opening times at the shop, and the Fish and Chip van which arrives at 7pm on Fridays.

---------- Onsite Shop ----------

It’s only a small shop, but is very reasonably priced, it has plenty of basics such as milk, cereal, confectionary and their locally sourced beer. Croissants, pizzas and other foods can be baked to order, they also provide ‘proper’ coffee too.

---------- The Cabin (#13) ----------

Cabin 13 is at the top of the camp, with its parking space (big enough for 2 cars) 100 yards from the door. The cabins either side are close enough to hear the occupants outside, but far enough to not feel overlooked. The rear of the cabin overlooks the forest, with no one directly overlooking the living area or hot tub on the decking. The cabin was clean (not spotless), warm (under floor heating throughout) and modern (flat screen TV, comfy sofas and new oven).

The flooring throughout is either laminate or stone tiles, and each room has its own thermostat to control the under floor heating. The rooms feel very light and airy, with plenty of natural light from the large windows. The master bedroom is large, with little storage (but enough for a weekend) and en-suite wet room (shower / toilet / sink). The second bedroom has two single beds and a storage cabinet with shelving. The lounge has a large corner sofa which could sit 4/5, a single seat, coffee table and flat screen TV with DVD player. The kitchen has an oven, dishwasher, microwave and fridge. All cutlery and crockery was provided, including plastic glasses for the hot tub use. Outside includes a table and chairs set, and of course the hot tub.

---------- Welcome Knock ----------

Within the first hour a member of staff came to the cabin and welcomed us again, ensuring we were settled in and answered any questions we had. To be honest, the welcome pack in the kitchen answered everything.

---------- The Hot Tub ----------

The hot tub is covered when not in use. It’s very easy to use, with only two buttons to operate, lights on/off and air/bubbles on/off. The temperature is set to 40 degrees I understand. The staff check it daily around midday, to ensure it’s running and at the correct levels for health and safety. It had not been refilled before we arrived, so it was ready to use straight away (perfect as the Friday night was our anniversary).

---------- Peaceful ----------

Apart from the very few cars driving to their cabins, it’s almost silent onsite. There are pheasants, squirrels and rabbits hopping around the grounds.

---------- Things to do ----------

I understand bikes can be hired, and there are a few activities to do, but as we had no intention of doing anything other than relax, I can’t comment on any of them. We did however take a 4 mile walk (Rosedale Walk) which was quiet and a very easy route. You’re only 20 miles from Whitby, which is a lovely seaside with the infamous ‘Magpie Cafe’.

---------- Places to Eat ----------

We were recommended to try The New Inn, which is a few miles from the camp. Unfortunately we arrived 10 minutes after they’d stopped serving, so we ventured into Pickering for a bite to eat at lunch instead. We ate out one evening at an Indian in Pickering called ‘Cilantro – Pan-Indian Restaurant’ – Fantastic food, fast service, busy atmosphere and good prices.

---------- Negatives ----------

The lack of curtain to cover the top half of the large window in the master bedroom. This means you are woken at sunrise, which isn’t a huge problem, but it’s the only criticism we have.

---------- Coming Back ----------

We enjoyed our weekend away, although we only stayed until Sunday night instead of Monday (work commitments), we will be coming back this year, and hoping for another bargain break.

---------- Comparing to Keldy Forest ----------

Before booking at Cropton, we couldn’t decide between this and Keldy. So we took a drive to Keldy Forest, to decide for next time. Keldy clearly has the better location, with the cabins deep into the woods, however the cabins are dated looking, and in need of some work. We were told they are not as modern as Cropton, with no under floor heating or modern kitchens. I think we made the right choice!

Room Tip: Cabin number 7 faces the opposite direction to every other cabin, which means you are looking over t...

Great location for North York Moors and the coast. Cabin clean when we arrived, no problems with any of the facilities and the hot tub was checked daily. Staff appeared to be helpful and friendly. Lovely to wake up with such a great outlook into the forest and the sights and sounds of nature. Outdoor hot tub was brilliant and we made good use of it over the duration of our stay.

Only downside that the cabin only has curtains covering the lower windows so it will get light at sunrise and you are likely to wake up early during BST.

We stayed at the forest holidays Cropton site week commencing mar 9 2012, we stayed in cabin 9 silver birch pet friendly, it had everything you could possibily need, we had wonderful weather while we were there & visited Whitby, pickering, york, we also had sunday lunch at the new inn pub & brewery, the sunday lunch was awful, the veg came separate & was covered in cheese sauce & had no taste what so ever, beer garden is good though but wouldnt eat there again. The staff at cropton cabins are lovely, Chris, Zac & Debbie we will be back, we had a great time in the hot tub which was used every night, my 2 little girls didnt want to come home, they explored the woods & loved seeing the pheasants, rabbits & squirrels.
The only thing i can comment badly on is the floors in the cabin were really dirty, could do with a really good deep clean, i think the cleaning is done by an outside cleaning company.
But we will most def be back again xxxxx

Have just returned from a lovely weekend here. We stayed in Cabin 27- Silver Birch Cabin with a hot tub, and there were 4 of us in total (2 couples).
We all had a wonderful time. The location is fantastic- with plenty of lovely views and numerous cycle and walking tracks. The staff were all very friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Bikes
We hired bikes from the centre for the full 3 days we were there- the staff were very helpful in setting us up with the bikes and recommended the best route for us to take (as we are not very experienced cyclists). Even though it was quite a wet weekend we still managed to ride the cycle tracks and experience some amazing scenery.

Cabin
The cabin itself was better then expected. They are very light and scenic. The underfloor heating is very nice- especially when you have just come in from the cold. There were plenty of kitchen facilities and the beds very comfy. We had plenty of use in the hot tub and were more then satisfied. It was very relaxing, especially on a night as the sun is setting.
The only slight down fall of the cabin was the cleanliness- had to go around the worktops with a quick wipe and the floor was a little dirty- but you are in the forrest at the end of the day and you find you naturally bring in a lot of dirt.

Location
DO NOT USE YOUR SAT NAV. We do not have a sat nav and used the instructions on Forest Cabins website and found the location with ease. Our friends however used there sat nav and ended up some where completly different and the site isnt very well sign posted. Follow the instructions on the web site and you will be fine.

Overall I would recommend this to all different groups of people- there is plenty to occupy you during the day and a romatic setting on the night.
