i was lucky enough to come across Rockland Lodges more than 2 years ago and have returned many, many times with my husband but also with my disabled elderley parents and absolutely love the place!
I regurlarly visit and stay alone as its the best place to unwind the stresses of life!

My most recent visit was with my daughter and twin grandaughters who are now also besotted!

I have stayed in many of the lodges and have always found them spotlessly clean and of the highest standard.

By far the best assett of the lodges is the owners themselves. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them and they will endevour to make every aspect of your stay with them as magical as possible.

I cannot praise Rockland Lodges highly enough.....simply Heaven on Earth

We drove into Rocklands and were greeted with the place lit up with fairy lights and christmas decorations which made the place seem somewhat magical! We collected our lodge key, bought some fresh eggs and settled in for the night. The lodge was lovely - clean, warm and had everything we needed - even a little walking guide. During the day, Rocklands lodges did not disappoint - it would have been lovely to have gone in the summer when we could have had BBQs! No complaints at all and we would recommend it to anyone!

Stayed in a studio apartment. Very clean. Staff are brilliant.

Didn't use the Children's play area, but from what I saw, the children that were playing were all very happy.

An ideal location to relax and visit the may attractions within 30 miles, from the City of York and the Towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Pickering, through to the Stately homes of Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, Helmsley, through to the two railways at Pickering and a lovely miniature one in Scarborough.

Well cone to all involved in running the site.

This was my first stay at Rocklands, though the family have visted earlier in the year and raved about he place. My initial thoughts on arrival were< they had over sold the place to me, but one settling in to the studio lodge I came round to their way of thinking. The very first impression was that the grounds are excellently maintained and the first class customer service recieved on a speady checking was reflected in the price. The only let-down in my eyes was the lack of a washing machine and dishwasher. I have recently stayed in similiar and lower priced accomodation that had these facilities. I found the studio lodge to be spacous and clean. The bedding was good quality and spotless. The site does allow dogs and our family pets were with us to. I would say if you dont like dogs this is not the site for you. I think almost every lodge had canine guests our weekend and all the dogs seemed to enjoy the site.Rocklands is an ideal base for going off and exploring. We had a long walk the first the day, a route which we dicovered in the information pack in the lodge. Our second day we went on the Steam Railway to Goathland, which I would highly recommend. Overall Rocklands is a great place to stay and I would visit again.

Its advertised as 4 star but we would rate 2 or 3 stars. The site itself is about 1 mile outside of Wreleton up a country lane and is in a quiet location. We stayed in lodge 12 ( the Dalby ) a family lodge and its views of rolling countryside amounted to a farmers field ( Which was driven through by the farmer each day of our stay) surrounded by trees about 75 yards away blocking any view. The lodge itself was spotless and clean and consisted of a living area ( kitchen/lounge/dining room) 1 twin room and 1 double room and a bathroom however we found the bathroom to be in need of updating ( the shower unit leaked, sealant was moulding and smelled damp ). The dvd player had instructions but unfortunately they were for a different make/model and the remote didnt correspond with it.
The childrens paly area/Bicycle hire were the biggest disappointment though. The area is about the size of a large 5 a side pitch with 2 swings/slide/cargo netting provided and a home made "Goal" which were run down and in need of repair , the kids toys provided reminded me of the ones provided in a dentist/doctors waiting room ( Broken with bits missing ). The bike hire consisted of 7 or 8 muddied and broken mountain bikes which when I tried to hire one for my son ( £5/day ) found that there wasnt one available in working order. The owner did provide one free of charge however it did have a back wheel that was flat and wasnt repaired.
The "petting zoo" area is a quarry at the entrance of the site with a very steep entrance/exit at one end and contained a pony ,2 goats and 2 rabbits. the floor was covered in straw for the pony and in amongst this were two rope/tyre swings which if you fell off you would land in the straw/pony manure which was littered around. The rabbits were caged with signs warning not to feed. Very poor and not what is eluded to in the brochure.
We used the lodge as a base to visit York and also to go on the excellent steam train to Goathland which departed from Pickering on the hour daily. Pickering is only a couple of miles away and has all the ammenities you would expect of a small town (bank/shops/takeaways/market etc ) ( Wrelton has one pub and no shop )
Others may enjoy it here and this was our personal view but all in all I dont think this place is 4 stars and when you ask almost £500 for a 4 day stay I think its fair to expect more than was provided ,we wont be returning. The Forrestry commision have lodges in Keldy Forret ( 2 mile from Rocklands ) which we visited and this is where we will be returning to as the prices are similar and the facilities much superior.

Thank you for your submission to Trip Advisor. I feel I need the right to reply in some of your comments.

On Monday 6th Sept 2010 we had our annual inspection from Quality in Tourism and we were awarded 4 stars again. This is the highest that an establishment of our size can be awarded. The lady carrying out the inspection even commented on how beautiful and peaceful the lodges are and in particular loved the views.

Today, I showed a family around Dalby, Lodge 12 and they were taken aback about how beautiful the views are. For those of you reading this that have never been to Rocklands, the views from Dalby and Bilsdale are across a farmer’s field and in the near distance are woods and beyond that the Howardian hills. The farmer does tend to his live stock and will pass by maybe once or twice a day, but it is not heavy traffic. A customer who left last week has booked the same lodge again and was enchanted by the small deer that came to say hello as she sat on her veranda.

Our play area covers one side of the open green and consists of a goal post and a climbing frame, swing and slide. They are all hand built by a local joiner as we have found in the past the mass produced plastic goal posts etc will not last very long as they are inferior quality. All of outdoor play equipment is made from strong wood and highly durable. We provide a small selection of toys for children to play with, such as a dolls pram with baby, tricycles etc. Some of the children can be rough with the items and by the end of the season they can be tired and then we replace them fresh for next season. We never leave broken toys to our knowledge out for children to play with. In fact after your comments we checked all toys and found that none were broken and I can assure the readers that our “home-made” play equipment is actually quality built and not rundown.

We are a small family run site, so we don’t have the amenities of a larger chain hotel. Many people booking prefer the intermit size of the site and in particular we have found the families love the size of the play area as it is ample for the children to play in and they feel secure.
You commented on the petting zoo. We have rabbits, that do have to live in a large cage at times to stop the foxes and owls eating them, we had 2 guinea-pigs that have unfortunately died from old age this September. We have two friendly goats that children love and in the back field we have two Shetland ponies that are also friendly. It’s not a huge petting zoo, but we are a small site. The brochure states we have “two friendly goats, two Shetland ponies, guinea pigs and a rabbit” This is exactly what we have and we do not allude to anything different. We also have a paddock at the back of the children’s play area which can be accessed through a wooden door in the hedge.

We have a small selection of bikes to hire, which we only charge £5 a day. This is extremely good value for money and we do try to get round to cleaning the bikes as soon as we can, but our priority is to clean the lodges first for customers arrival. As it was the children’s holidays and the bikes were in huge demand, most customers didn’t mind the odd bit of mud as they were about to go for a cycle through countryside anyway. NONE of the bikes are broken as we have a bike mechanic living on site that tends to them regularly. When we didn’t have a small enough bike for approx 6 year old, we lent our grandson’s old bike out for free as a gesture of goodwill. I pointed out that the bike had a flat tire but the customer said it was fine as the child was just peddling on the grass. We do not have hire bikes for younger children as we do not want responsibility on them riding on the country lanes.

I think I have covered most of the points here

We had our main family summer break at this site and chose it specifically because it was dog/family orientated. The site is set in a small copse with both semi detached and detached lodges. There is also a static caravan adjacent to one of the detached lodges. The location is very peaceful and tranquil with a large grassed area and play equipment for children to burn off their excess energy in safety.
Check-in was very easy and quick, and in no time we were settled in our lodge. The lodge itself was immaculately clean and had everything we required for our stay. The lane leading to the site is quiet and we used this to walk our dog in the mornings. A short drive North of the site is Keldy Forest where our dog could run around to it’s hearts content.
The owners were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. They sell free range eggs and other local produce in the reception area and we bought the eggs.
We found the location an ideal base for visiting places such as Pickering, Scarborough, Whitby and York.
The only criticisms we have are with our lodge. The gate leading to our decking missing so got young children and dogs coming to visit us. Both sink plugs had broken chains and there were chips/cracks in the some of the items provided. There were no instructions for the use of the electric fire so we had to put on the central heating to warm up one room in the morning. I'm sure if we had brought these to the attention of the owners they would have been rectified but a little more attention to detail and this site would have received a 5 score.

After reading the positive reviews we thought we would try a stay here with the idea of bringing our grandson in the future. On arrival we had a good welcome. We had booked a studio lodge for 2 nights and found it quite clean. Some of the information regarding special future offers were out of date ie Christmas Bookings 2008. The tv was hit and miss with the freeview channels. We were also a bit disappointed to find that all but two of the lodges were semi detached. We could hear the noise from the next lodge and when the neighbours walked to their lodge they had to walk past our window. We sat on the wooden verandah but it wasn't private, people walking past and parked cars right in front. There seems plenty of toys out for the young children ie bikes, tractors, sand pit, swings and goal posts. It also seems like the majority of people take dogs. It does say no dogs on the beds or you have to pay for cleaning of the bedspread, so apparently they are not washed after each guest! I did hear one woman shout to another "your dog has made himself very comfy on our bed". This put me off using the bed the second night that I considered going home. As for 'woodland glen' there are a few trees but all lodges are visible to each other. Check it out on Google Earth. If you have young children and or dogs this may be the place for you but we will not return with our grandson.

Hello,

Sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at Rocklands. Most of our guests do enjoy their time here. We are dog friendly and we take extra care cleaning each lodge ourselves. I must assure you that we do change and clean the bedding after every guest, I am sure you found that your laundry was clean. When dogs have been on beds we do send them for specialist cleaning and therefore do fine anyone for letting a dog on the bed.

August is our busiest time with it being the children’s holiday. We like all our guests to have a wonderful time here no matter the age, therefore we provide toys to keep to the kids entertained. When the children go back to school the park is restored back to a haven of peace and quiet.

Some of our lodges are more private than others, but we only have 14 lodges on site so there is not a lot of disturbance generally. Each lodge does have a private balcony for the people in that lodge.

We do specify on our website that the lodges are semi-detached apart from the Supreme Lodge.

Maybe you can try us later in the year when the children have gone back to school so it is quieter and we can book you into lodge 3 which has views across the fields and the balcony is secluded from the car park and other guests.

Warm regards
Andrea Watson
Manager
