“Ideal base for exploring Yorkshire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

Comfortable, spotless, tranquil, idyllic and 'nothing is too much trouble' were some of the review descriptions which made us decide on Cropton Forest Lodges for a family break. We rented Middlehead Cottage and Meadow's Edge and not only did they live up to the reviews, they surpassed them. The location is perfect for exploring the moors, villages and the coast. Ben and Sue have created exceptional cottages, sympathetic to the surroundings. We loved it!

We travelled as 2 couples, but my husband and his friend travelled up earlier in the day so that they could fit in a day walking. Upon their arrival (too early to get into cottage) Ben and Sue, the owners, greeted them and took all the food etc they had packed for weekend into the cottage. When the men arrived back from their walk they were not only astounded by the beautiful cottage, but also that all the food and drink had been neatly put in cupboards and fridge! Ben and Sue are truly wonderful hosts and could not make you feel more welcome. The cottages, decor, furnishings and peaceful, tranquil surroundings of the forest are all remarkable and make for a fantastic weekend break. We will definitely be returning as soon as we can and we cannot recommend highly enough.

My two friends and I have just spent an idyllic and wonderfully relaxing few days at Willows End Cottage, Cropton Forest Lodge.
I cannot speak too highly of the accommodation, it truly is first class. Spotless, extremely comfortable, and exceedingly well appointed with modern equipment a stay here is great value for money.
Ben couldn't have been more helpful and friendly on our arrival after a long journey from Devon providing us with groceries until we could obtain our own.
I would have rated it six star if I could, highly recommended.

A couple of points to ponder though - the property is remote and not the easiest to find down what is little more than a track through Forestry Commission Land and there is a weak, at best, mobile phone service - although I appreciated that, no unwanted interruptions!!
The neighbours make up for this though, all eat grass or seeds!! Roe deer, badgers, pheasants (by the score!), rabbits, hares, and many species of birds were seen during our visit and the only sound to be heard at dusk was that of the wind rustling softly through the treetops was something I'll remember for a long, long, time.
Thanks again Ben from the three of us, Cropton Forest Lodge is a magical place.

A word of advice to begin with. I stupidly relied on the Sat Nav to get us there instead of taking advantage of the information provided on the website, and got hopelessly lost. But after a desperate 'phone call to Ben, who gave us perfect instructions, it was plain sailing from there. Although we arrived one and a half hours late, we were welcomed very warmly and felt 'at home' almost immediately.
The cottage is second to none, being very well appointed and beautifully presented - every detail has been thought out. The setting is idyllic and makes a very good base whether you want to explore the countryside or travel to some of the better-known attractions of North Yorkshire.
I can usually find a downside regarding holiday accommodation but, this time I'm beaten. Brock Cottage gets full marks and passes with flying colours.

  • Liked — Very difficult to pick out one thing but the friendliness of Sue & Ben has to have a mention.
  • Disliked — The fact that we had only booked one week

I booked this accommodation as a surprise for my partner's 50th and we were not disappointed. The accommodation was beautiful and we were welcomed by Sue and Ben. We felt at home straight away and the relaxing location enhanced the stay. The facilities where excellent. The weather was beautiful so we didn't need the wood burner, though everything was there should we have needed it. Having found this by luck, it will certainly remain on my MUST return list.. Can't wait! :-). PS use the sat nav directions provided by Sue (I didn't and ended up on forest roads!)

The accommodation is fantastic, though I would stress to use the correct sat nav info provided.. This will ensure you approach the correct way instead of driving down the Forrest roads.. Though the locals where very friendly in helping us out...! You want for nothing here and Sue and Ben can't do enough to ensure your stay is a memorable one.. Can't wait to go back some time.. :-)

This is really the best place to stay, you won't be disappointed, first class accommodation.
This must be our 7th stay and it won't be the last.
Spotless and clean, everything you need, all the little things have been thought about.
Perfect spot for exploring the dales and coast.

And for some reason we always sleep well staying here, it could be the Yorkshire air, the great beds, quiet location or the action packed days, but for whatever reason we certainly manage to catch up on the zzzzz's.
