Well where do i start, the minute we arrived we were greeted by Ann & Colin the owners as though we were long lost friends, they invited us into their kitchen for a cup of tea & a catch up since we saw them last. (this is the second time we have been)
The Old Smithy is a wonderful place with its country style kitchen with cupboards full of all types of cereal, tea & coffee, the fridge was filled with melon, orange juice ,milk, yogurts, marmalade, butter & sauces. We stayed B&B and both mornings had a choice of what to have from either a large farmhouse breakfast, kippers, scrambled egg & salmon, you also get a half & half loaf of white & brown bread still warm from the oven. There is a huge lounge with 2 x 3 seater sofa`s which are ideal to curl up in after a long day. The bathroom is again spacious with a lovely shower & the bed is so comfortable you don`t really want to get out of it!
The area is one of real beauty & the views are lovely. I can highly recommend The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge for a lovely bar meal or Al Carte Meal, or just to chill out in front of the open fire.

We stayed at The Old Smithy (next to Ann's Cottage) for three nights in July. From the moment we arrived, we were taken care of with such detail and kindness that we couldn't quite believe the astonishing value with the rates Ann and Colin charge! We've stayed in far, far more expensive hotels and b&b's which The Old Smithy would put to shame. The cottage itself is like a Tardis...much bigger on the inside than it looks in the photos and with a definite 'wow' factor. A huge living space with two 3-seater sofas (perfect for crashing on after a busy day), a stunning fireplace with a log-burner (we didn't need this as it was July but hey, it was great to look at!), a large coffee table with a huge bowl of fresh fruit, walking guides, local attractions and everything you'd need to plan your stay. There are also magazines and books. The bedroom area is off the living room but it's such a large open-plan space that it's fine. The bathroom was immaculate and again, had everything you could possibly need in there. Ann even puts hair straighteners in with the hairdryer! Hair straighteners! Can you imagine the sort of hotel room you'd have to pay for to get a bonus like that? Kitchen is separate and perfectly sized. The fridge was filled with cold fresh melon, orange juice, milk cream and yoghurts when we arrived. Coffee (instant and ground), tea (herbal and normal), a caffetiere and hot chocolate filled the drinks cupboard. We also had a cupboard full of cereals for brekkie....all this was ready and waiting for us when we arrived. We had chosen the B&B option and we're so glad we did! By far the best cooked breakfasts we've ever eaten! No grease, fantastic sausages, best scrambled eggs ever...oh god I could go on! Nothing was ever too much trouble. My partner had his birthday the second day there and Ann helped me hide his birthday cake and wine in her fridge until we went out and then she sneaked them back into our cottage for a surprise when we came home. Ann would also do a turn-down when we were out so we'd come home to choccies on the pillow and the bed looking very inviting! We tried the brilliant 'Moors Kitchen' restaurant-at-home delivery service on our first night. Great idea. You ring in your order before midday with Ann, she passes it on to Moors Kitchen and at your specified time you get a three-course, yummy hot meal delivered to your door. All you have to do is lay the table! Perfect after a 6 and a half hour drive! Sooty the cat and Fluffy his sister were welcome companions although they're not actually allowed in The Old Smithy itself, meaning the place is not only smoke-free but pet hair-free too. The views from the garden are simply stunning. As are the views pretty much everywhere in this area! There is a covered barbecue area in the garden with outdoor seating. Ann booked us a table at a local (very good) pub restaurant on our last night. When we left the next day, after a coffee and a chat around Ann and Colin's kitchen table as we settled up, we felt we were leaving family. Big hugs and promises to come back were made (and will most certainly be kept) and we very reluctantly left for home. Ann and Colin have made Ann's Cottage and The Old Smithy very, very special. It's luxury in the middle the moors.

We stayed at The old smithy as self catering but the owners, Ann & colin, do offer B&B if required. The cottage was very spacious, clean and well equipped and we also had the benefit of Ann coming in when we were out making the bed, cleaning up and washing up. She also got our shopping for us and took in my washing! It is an excellent service in a beautiful area of the country. We also used 'moor kitchen' which is a home cooked food delivery service!
