As people have mentioned, this hotel is literally in the shadow of Stirling Castle. One of my caveats is there is really not much parking. I had to move my vehicle twice before we finally got to settle in for the night. The rooms are an interesting mix of not kept up with the times and refurbished (the bath in my room was refurbished but the rest of the room was quite old.) My room was quiet, but then when you looked out the window the view was directly and entirely over the cemetery. So the shades remained closed....

The water coming out of the pipes in the bath was extremely moldy. And given the age and location there is probably little that can be done. However, after showering the moldy smell stayed with me until I could shower it off at the next hotel. If you are very aware of this aroma (and I am as I deal with it in my profession) then this would be a reason to keep me away in the future.

However, the pub is very fun. The staff are very friendly. A nice selection of cask beers and the food offerings are good and very filling. In fact, neither myself or my niece could finish our meal.

Chose to stay here for our two nights in Stirling, as I've eaten here on prior trips. Bar area and food is to die for, and huge portions! Staff all very friendly and feel "at home". Can't say enough about the breakfast -- unbelievably good!

The only down side to this hotel was the beds we had. We had a twin-bedded room, which had a large bathroom facing the castle (wonderful view at night when lit up!). Both beds were very hard, and felt as though the mattresses had not been replaced in 50 years. Neither had any cushioning to them at all, and my bed was hard from my head to my knees and then you could feel the springs from the knees down. Neither of us slept well either night and hurt so bad from the beds we would sit up in the chairs part of the night.

Would definitely stay here again, if not for the beds. Everything else was perfect!

Stayed here for two nights while visiting the local sights. The hotel is very well placed right next to the castle. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was large and well fitted and the staff are very friendly. The food is lovely, it is a very busy bar but service is quick and staff are chattyand friendly. We booked a table for the first evening and were glad we did steak was lovely and the lasagne very tasty. The breakfasts are served upstairs in a seperate room and are extremely well cooked and lovely. Would stay here again if we are ever in the area. It is small (only 4 bedrooms) but large in its welcome and comfort. Would also recommend a visit to the Old Town Jail - really good entertainment.

We arrived at the Portcullis after driving from Glasgow Prestwik Airport and got a welcome break when we reached the hotel. The hotel is a small and charming place where you instantly feel relaxed. The hotel room had a nice standard, the bathrooms were clean and fairly modern. The spaceous rooms are on the top floor passing several stairs and halls on your way. The pub in the ground floor has a relaxing scottish atmosphere. They serve serveral cask ales and the sirloin steak is reccommended. We were very pleased with the facilities and the hotell staff. The hotell is situated just below the historic Stirling Castle.

We enjoyed our stay at the Portcullis Hotel. It is right next to the Castle, and we found Stirling to be a wonderful town. The rooms are standard, and the bathroom was clean and recently refurbished. Dinner in the pub was very good, and the pub features cask conditioned ales.

Stayed at the Portcullis as a birthday surprise booked by my lovely boyfriend. We had a comfortable room on top floor with views of Stirling and the river Forth. The location of the hotel is perfect - right next to Stirling Castle and within easy walking distance of the other atttractions, pubs and shops. Meals served in the ambience of the bar/restaurant were delicious but make sure you're hungry as the portions are huge. The best thing of all ihowever is the friendly welcoming atmosphere and that is all down to the staff (all Scottish) who certainly don't need any lessons in customer care.
