“Impersonal and run down”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

We were disappointed at this Hotel Upon arrival we eventually found their car park and came into the Hotel via the rear entrance. This gave us a poor impression of the hotel and first impressions count. We were expected but the request for the full payment for 2 nights on arrival was unexpected. The room we were allocated was clean but no more than adequate (Room 450). Both door frames had been damaged (main door & bathroom) and poorly repaired, there were 2 out of the 4 lights in the bathroom not working (hanging from the ceiling so unlikely to work). The weather was very hot whilst we were there and needed the windows open to keep cool. Unfortunately on the 2nd night there was a wedding reception with disco until 1am just below our room. Clearing up took another noisy hour. The hotel would be aware of this so why allocate this room to us? Overall the Hotel is tired with impersonal staff. On the positive side the food in the restuarant was good and the buffet breakfast excellent.

Room Tip: Go to the Premier Inn a mile or so out of Stirling!!!

This was meant to be a celebration for our 43rd anniversary and our friend's 71st birthday. He is of limited ability and needs a consistent access capability. Firstly the only disabled parking space was filled by some (very smart) vintage Mercedes Benz with personalised plates but no disabled badge!!Then the disabled access lift from the car park was out of order, then the floor where they were accommodated had a number of sets of steps interrupting the floor and the main lift broke broke down during the afternoon. Whilst the staff were very helpful, the service good and the food certainly better than adequate our principal concerns were for our disabled friend who , all-in-all, could have claimed that he was discriminated against especially when I had made a point of phoning up to ask about the disabled access but he didn't want to spoil the occasion.

Room Tip: don't use the first floor if you're disabled! In fact don't use this hotel if you are di...

We chose the Golden Lion Stirling as our wedding venue. We met with June Wannan who helped us create our perfect day. She is an amazing woman & a great asset to have in your hotel. The Regency Suite (ballroom) completely took our breath away on the first day & then again on our special day. The staff at the hotel are so friendly & professional . The rooms are very comfortable & well equipped. The food in the hotel is at a very high standard, from breakfast, afternoon tea & dinner. Compliments to the chefs. I have stayed at the hotel many times now & it has met my expectations everytime. Please ignore any negative comments & come & make up your own minds.

We stayed here for one night as it was very close to Stirling Castle. To start off, the (free) parking lot is very difficult to get to because of one way streets and dead ends. The lobby looked promising and was well appointed with nice furniture, but that seemed to be the end of it. The elevator was very small and very old. It did get us to the fifth floor, though. As soon as we stepped off the elevator, we could smell a musty/stuffy odor and it didn't go away once we went into our room, even once we opened the window and left it open all night. I imagine this is because of the mold/mildew buildup because there was no air conditioning and the windows looked as if they were original to the building. The room was spacious, but shabby and tired. The bed was very low to the floor, similar to sleeping on an air mattress, but the linens were clean. The walls were paper thin and we could hear every little sound. The bathroom had obviously been updated but it looked like it was more of a paint job than a remodel. There was a nice new basin sink, but everything else looked like it had been patched up over and over and the cracks were showing. My shower in the morning had no hot water. To top it off, our car was literally blanketed in pigeon excrement the next morning-it was unbelievably disgusting and took 20 minutes to clean. Apparently, we had parked under their tree (which no one warned us about). All in all, it was bearable for one night, but I wouldn't recommend staying there if you have another option in the area. It is very obvious that the hotel is over 200 years old and in need of a complete overhaul.

Room Tip: Avoid the corner room on the fifth floor

VERY DISSAPOINTING. I JUST WISH I HAD READ THRU MORE REVIEWS. This hotel is supposed to be a flag ship hotel.......Sorry but it isnt!!!! My partner arrived and commented on the reception/lounge area looking nice. We got our room keys....once out of the public area into the corridors and lift this hotel is extremely tatty with dirty walls. On entering our room (5th floor) We barely even put our bags down, the bedroom walls were FILTHY, I couldnt believe how bad it was. I went to reception and politely explained the room was dirty, the recetpionist I have to say didnt look to surprised. She gave us some more keys and we viewed another 4 rooms, Picked the best of the bunch. It was still tatty but the best of the them (I have to say non of the rooms looked anything like the web site pictures!!!). We had the dinner bed and breakfast menu. My evening meal was awful, the started "ceasar salad" came on a tea plate looked liked something you would serve a 1 year old - 2 pieces of small chicken, a slice of red onion and 2 crutons. The main meal which was haddock with new potatoes, carrots. This was all pre heated veg very poor quality - the fish was ok though, oh and the sprig of parcley! My partner opted for the ala cart menu and his meal looked better - he had to pay towards the cost of this! The lady next to me had the pablova, unfortunatley with was a supermarket base with a tablespoon of strawbery dressing and a miniscule amount of cream. We had to ask 3 times if we could please have a jug of water with our meal and wine! My partner and I love to travel and have stayed in many hotels and I have never complained before. But I just had to on this occassion. We were both very dissapointed with this hotel - It is majorley overpriced and I would rate the rooms a 2* This company seriously needs go get its act together , why would someone stay somewhere so filthy and mattress cheap and uncomfortable! Stirling is a lovely place and If we come back - even if we paid half the price for the rooms we still would not stay here. PREMIER INN - more than half the price and much cleaner - food better to.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay
THis floor is due for refurbishment at a later date however is not quite as you state. These rooms underwent a light makeover earlier this year and most of the soft furnishings and beddings were replaced as new

I appreciate the colour scheme is slightly dark , but the walls are not dirty

The corridor is next on our ongoing planned maintenance program to be redecorated to reflect the remaining decor throughout the hotel

I have discussed your comments with our chef who was concerned to read your comments as he takes pride in the high standard food offering, however had you advised you were dissatisfied during your two night stay we could have addressed the issue then and investigated

Thank you again

The last review for this hotel I read was very negative but as I had already booked I decided to go ahead anyway. I think we must have been in a different hotel to the previous reviewer. Directions to the hotel were easily downloaded and followed. The reception staff were charming and very helpful with advice and directions to attractions around Stirling. The room was spacious with a settee and 2 armchairs, large flat screen TV and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was large with an excellent shower. Our evening meal was of a high quality and served by efficient helpful cheerful staff. The wine we chose was of a medium price but of excellent quality.
Breakfast was self serve but there was a large choice and encouragement from the staff to have more. We were told to leave our car in the car park without charge for the whole day as it would be easier for us. All this for 2 for £99.00.
