Stayed fror 2 nights. Rooms (two singles on floor 3) were fine - looked recently decorated. Staff very pleasant and attentive. Entry was available by lift from carpark - very grim entrance though. getting out was a bit harder as you cannot get down to car park by pressing button in lift. Need to run downstairs and call lift from there. Needed to use lift due to disability

Meals a bit disappointing. Starters were fine (chicken goujons were tender and batter was very light) but mains nothing special. The pork loin was tough and the fish cake had a substantial crust. Vegetable curry was nice although was described as root vegetables I did struggle to find them - plenty red and yellow peppers and courgettes though

We stayed here for one night during a road trip around Scotland in August 2012. The Golden Lion was our most expensive stay on the trip and the worst of all the hotels we stayed (total of 7 hotels over 9 days). We stayed in room 325 which had a cold shower (I asked at reception to get this sorted but nothing happened), screws sticking out the wall, lamps hanging off the wall, a window with no handle on to shut it and also the handle to the room door was loose! To make things worse the morning after we went down to breakfast to find no cooked food left in the buffet style serving trays and were told they were due to be refilled soon, unfortunately we were on a tight schedule to get to our next location.
I have included some photos to see if I get a response as the staff at the check in desk didn't seem too concerned with my complaints.
The only good feature is the location as this is right in the town centre.

Room Tip: Don't go in 325 unless it has been re-decorated since August 2012!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay over 6 months ago
Your comments were taken on board at the time and rectified as we were in the middle of replacing the heating on the 3rd floor in readiness for winter where the fixings were still in the room to be reused for the replacement heater, like wise with the hot water.

The light fitments are in full working order and only knocked off angle by previous occupant otherwise this is a very nice room and the door handle has no other purpose than to pull door closed, the door are self locking
Thankyou

we returned to the Golden Lion with another couple who went with us last time round for new year. which we really enjoyed. had great rooms. exelent food. so we really where looking forwards to our new year stay (2012). But where to be dissapionted our rooms where no way as good as befor.the shower was dirty. the tea and coffee tray was thick with dust. the food on new years eve was not as good. i could not eat my main course, new years day night i sent it back (no one came to ask about it even though i explained why i was sending it back) i orderd steak pie it was all grizle i could not even cut it with my knife the other three people did manage a little of theirs but left most of it. Ido have to say breakfast was very good loads of chioce. It was a shame as on other visits the hotel was great we will not go back

Thank you for tsaking the time to comment on your recent stay with us I am disappionted that you did not enjoy this year. I have discussed your comments with all concerned to ensure there is no reocurrence. All our Bedrooms vary in size. shape and colour scheme due to the age of the Building and we are refurbishing rooms accordingly at this time to keep them uptodate and fresh for our guests
Once again
Many Thanks

It is 2 years since I have written a TripAdvisor review. Last night I needed accommodation at short notice in Stirling as a consequence of vehicle problems. I was wary about a city centre hotel as they can vary so much, but I was reassured at the garage. It is located in the centre of Stirling, close to the Castle and other historical buildings. The area appears slightly run-down. The hotel is more than 2 centuries old and had good period features. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The food was good. The room was clean. It was good value. I would stay there again.

This hotel has some very good points:

1. Free parking in the centre of the town
2. Polite, friendly and efficient staff
3. Traditional and nice surroundings and good state of decorative repair generally, albeit a bit "lost in time".
4. Reasonably cheap.
5. Massive rooms with lounge area.
6. Big plasma telly.

A few bad points include:

1. Poor soundproofing from the corridor/other rooms - part of this is due to the age of the building.

2. Poor state (broken) of tiles in bathroom, missing or dirty grouting, bad/missing sealant and finishing. This is unfortunate because the bath, shower, tiles, basin and toilet are all of high quality and fairly new.

However, there is one thing that makes me feel this is a poor hotel: When travelling on business, it is particularly important to sleep well. After plane journeys, gruelling days, and more gruelling days to come, you need to rest well. Unfortunately, I experienced the worst mattress I have ever slept on. Not only was this mattress VERY old, it was VERY knackered. The bed was lumpy and I could feel the springs. I seriously contemplated sleeping on the floor. To offer some perspective on how bad this mattress was, I can only compare it to the (now) second worst mattress I have ever slept on. This was in the Grand Hotel Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This was another place "frozen in time" where it appeared nothing had been changed for about 30 years. That mattress was bad, very bad. However, I was distracted at the time because I was more concerned about being kidnapped or murdered in the most violent city in Africa. However, despite the threat of the Congolese militia, I actually slept better in that hotel than I did at the Golden Lion.

This review just about escapes being "terrible" because of the good things about the hotel. But bad and old mattresses are inexcusable.

My husband and I booked an overnight break, dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is very nice, as it is just after Christmas it was very quiet, but we couldn't find fault with the hotel. Our room was very small but clean and warm. Our meal was disappointing. as we were apparently the only 2 booked in for D B and B there was no table d'hotel menu. We ordered from the a la carte. i opted for goats cheese as a starter but alas there was no goats cheese. I then picked prawns with apple, I got a very nice prawn cocktail- no apple! Breakfast was average. We have had better D B and B's but the Golden Lion was OK. the huge advantage for this hotel is it's location,in the center next to the shops.
